Overview

Members can publish topics and replies with a WYSIWYG or Markdown editor, take part in real-time chat, and receive notifications for follows, likes and topic subscriptions. Groups have activity feeds, while tags let members organize discussions and follow subjects. Moderation tools and private spaces support managed communities.

Administrators can create unlimited administrator and moderator accounts and set permissions for each. A public Read API and RESTful Write API provide integration options, and NodeBB says more than 500 plugins and themes can be installed from its control panel. That breadth allows a community to adapt the platform, but add-ons also require care: third-party plugins and themes may collect data outside NodeBB's DPA.

NodeBB was founded in 2014 by three developers and is headquartered in Canada. Its documentation covers installation on Linux distributions, macOS and Windows, as well as cloud deployment options including Docker.

Key features

Discussion and live interaction: Flexible editors, chat and activity notifications cover both asynchronous forum conversations and quicker exchanges.
Groups, tags and moderation: Member-created groups and followed tags give communities ways to organize participation; moderation tools help staff manage it.
Administration and integrations: Unlimited staff accounts with configurable permissions suit teams with multiple moderators. The Read and RESTful Write APIs support software integrations.
Extensions: More than 500 plugins and themes can be installed from the control panel. This offers customization, while bringing third-party data and security considerations.
Search and spam controls: Basic full-text search uses the bundled database engine. Solr and Elasticsearch require third-party plugins. Akismet, StopForumSpam and Project Honeypot integrations provide spam-prevention options.
Security and privacy: NodeBB operates a bug bounty program, but eligible testing is limited to try.nodebb.org and excludes third-party plugins. Registration presents users with data and rights information and requires affirmative consent; add-ons may collect additional data outside the DPA.

Pricing

NodeBB offers a free self-hosted edition and four paid hosting plans, all priced per month. Paid hosting plans include SSL, custom plugins, a custom domain, unlimited staff users and priority support. The main trade-offs between tiers are pageview and storage allowances, plus backup frequency.

Self-hosted: 0.00 USD per free, free to download and install under GPLv3. It is for organizations prepared to install and operate the software on their own server.
Starter: 20.00 USD per month, billed $20/month, with 50,000 pageviews, 5gb storage and weekly backups. It is the entry hosted tier for a smaller community that can stay within those caps.
Hamlet: 100.00 USD per month, billed $100/month, with 500,000 pageviews, 20gb storage and daily backups. It raises capacity and backup frequency for a busier community.
Village: 250.00 USD per month, billed $250/month, with 2,000,000 pageviews, 100gb storage and daily backups. It fits communities needing substantially more traffic and storage.
City: 750.00 USD per month, billed $750/month, with 10,000,000 pageviews, 300gb storage and daily backups. It is the highest-volume listed hosting tier.
Enterprise Solutions: Custom pricing. Options include custom integrations and feature development, theme customization, SSO, migration services, and premium hosting or self-hosting.

NodeBB offers a 14-day trial. For any hosted tier, pageview and storage limits matter when sizing a community; the free edition avoids a hosting charge but leaves deployment and server operation to the organization.

Platforms

NodeBB supports API, Linux, macOS, self-hosted, web and Windows. Its installation documentation also covers cloud deployment, including Docker, giving technically capable teams several deployment routes.

Who it's for

NodeBB is a strong fit for brands building discussion communities and organizations that want a product-support board with configurable moderation, staff permissions and member activity features. Self-hosting suits teams willing to manage deployment; paid hosting suits those who want NodeBB to host the community and provide priority support. It is less compelling for organizations that need advanced search without relying on third-party plugins or that want to avoid the data-handling considerations of community add-ons.

Pros and cons

Pros: Unlimited administrator and moderator accounts with configurable permissions avoid a staff-account ceiling.
Pros: Editors, chat, notifications, groups and tags cover several forms of community participation in one platform.
Pros: Free GPLv3 self-hosting and paid hosted tiers let organizations choose between operating their own deployment and paying for hosting.
Cons: Bundled full-text search uses the database search engine; Solr and Elasticsearch depend on third-party plugins.
Cons: Third-party plugins and themes can collect data outside NodeBB's DPA, so extension choices warrant privacy review.
Cons: Hosted plans have explicit pageview and storage ceilings, and the lowest paid tier uses weekly rather than daily backups.

Alternatives

For a community platform comparison, see Community Platforms, Online Community Platforms and Social Networking Software.

Whaller is worth considering if a free hosted option with a stated cap of 100 members, five spheres and one organization is a better fit; its Pro plan is 3.00 EUR per month per user, per month, excl. tax.
Reddit is an alternative for communities that prefer a platform available on web, iOS and Android; its Premium plan adds ad-free browsing and other listed account benefits.
Octo is another option with a free forever tier for 0–99 users, one admin and 10 GB of disk space.
Discourse is an alternative self-hosted forum with an open-source codebase and a free plan listing unlimited members, two staff seats and 500k monthly page views.
UNA is a free alternative for teams considering web, iOS and Android platforms.
Meetup is an alternative for groups centered on in-person events; its Starter plan includes one group, unlimited members, two in-person events per month and 10 attendees per event.
HumHub is an alternative with a self-hosted AGPLv3 Community Edition and access to a module marketplace.
Zapnito is an alternative with a free Starter platform and an Enterprise plan priced at 708.00 USD per year, billed annually.

Verdict

Choose NodeBB if you need a configurable discussion platform for a brand community or support board, and value multiple staff accounts, integrations and a choice of self-hosting or paid hosting. Its central trade-off is that stronger search depends on third-party plugins, which also deserve scrutiny for data collection. Teams that need a straightforward bundled search experience or want to minimize extension-related privacy considerations should look elsewhere.
