Overview

NextGenUp is a desktop and self-hosted app for enlarging and enhancing images and video, best suited to people who want their media processed on their own hardware. Its appeal is the combination of image, video, and face-restoration tools with a free, open-source license; users seeking cloud convenience or smoother video motion should look elsewhere.

Key features

For images, Quick, Quality, and Ultra modes enlarge files, while Enhance reduces noise and blur without changing resolution. The modes cover different goals, but output format is PNG, a constraint for anyone who needs a different format. Image enlargement can reach 8K. GFPGAN v1.4 detects faces and restores detail that general upscaling may miss, making it a useful addition for portraits rather than a substitute for every image workflow.

Video can be enlarged to 4K with basic or professional AI modes. Batch processing supports working through multiple files, but frame interpolation is not supported; choose another tool if creating smoother motion is a requirement.

Processing stays on the user's hardware: models, FFmpeg, and the server run locally, with no cloud uploads or external processing calls. CPU is the default, GPU acceleration is automatic when available, and Chrome or Edge 113 and later can use WebGPU. This setup is attractive for privacy-conscious users, though performance depends on their hardware. The project uses Real-ESRGAN, GFPGAN v1.4, YuNet, ONNX Runtime, FFmpeg, and Tauri; its MIT license and auditable GitHub project give technically minded users room to inspect the software.

Pricing

NextGenUp is free: the Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free, with no subscription, watermark, or account requirement. There is no trial limit. That makes it easy to use without a recurring commitment, but the web app has a 2 GB file limit and automatically removes older processed files after 24 hours. Desktop use avoids those web-specific limits. No refund policy is stated.

Platforms

NextGenUp runs on macOS, Windows 10/11, and Linux as a desktop app, or as a self-hosted web app accessible from a device on the same network. The browser app supports WebGPU in Chrome or Edge 113 and later. Local processing and self-hosting suit users willing to rely on their own machine or network; those seeking a hosted service should consider a web-first alternative.

Who it's for

Choose NextGenUp if you want a no-cost tool for image and video enlargement, face restoration, and non-enlarging cleanup, and prefer files to remain on your hardware. It is less suitable if you need frame interpolation, a non-PNG output, or a hosted workflow without managing local software. Matily is a non-profit software studio based in Salt Lake City, founded and maintained by Ripon Chandra Malo; support is offered through GitHub stars, issues, pull requests, email, and LinkedIn.

Pros and cons

Pro: Local processing keeps files on the user's computer instead of sending them to cloud services.
Pro: Image, video, face restoration, and noise-and-blur cleanup are available in one free MIT-licensed project.
Pro: No account, watermark, subscription, or trial limit lowers the barrier to use.
Con: Web files are capped at 2 GB, and processed files are cleaned up after 24 hours.
Con: PNG is the output format, limiting users who require another format.
Con: Video tops out at 4K and does not include frame interpolation.

Alternatives

Real-ESRGAN is another free, open-source option across Linux, macOS, self-hosted, web, and Windows platforms; choose it if you want the underlying super-resolution project rather than NextGenUp's combined toolset.

Bigjpg may fit readers seeking a freemium image enlarger across mobile, desktop, and web platforms; its free plan allows 20 pictures a month, slow speed, shared-server processing, a 5 MB upload limit, and up to 4x enlargement.

LetsEnhance suits API users who want a credit-based entry point: its free plan provides 10 credits, with a 24-megapixel input limit, 50 MB input limit, and 8-megapixel output limit.

PixelPanda Image Upscaler is an API, extension, and web alternative with one-time credit purchases, including 10 credits for 1.99 USD per month (one-time purchase, no subscription).

PicWish Image Upscaler offers a freemium option with limited non-HD downloads per day on its free plan; consider it if that daily-download model suits your needs.

Krea Enhancer is an API-based alternative with a free allowance of 100 compute units per day, useful for readers who prefer a daily compute quota.

SupaRes has a free one-time quota of 10 processing credits, a 64-megapixel limit, and one user; it may suit occasional API processing within those limits.

Upscale.media provides three free credits and three downloads each month, a fit for readers whose occasional work fits a monthly quota.

Verdict

NextGenUp is a strong choice for people who want free, local image and video upscaling with face restoration and no account or subscription. Its main advantage is keeping processing on the user's hardware; look elsewhere if you need frame interpolation, non-PNG output, or a cloud-hosted workflow.
