Overview

The CLI brings project creation, development serving, file generation, building, and deployment into one workflow. Its commands and schematics encourage a structured application, which helps teams keep project setup and generated code consistent. That focus is also its boundary: developers working outside the Nest ecosystem have little reason to choose it as a general JavaScript project tool.

It is free and open source under the MIT license. Developers can install it globally with npm or run it through npx without a global installation. The CLI binary requires Node.js v20.11 or later, and it needs a Node.js binary built with internationalization support (ICU).

Key features

Project creation and code generation

nest new creates an application with boilerplate files and offers a choice of ESM or CommonJS. nest generate creates or modifies files according to a schematic. Custom templates are supported, giving teams room to tailor their starting point while retaining a repeatable generation workflow. These commands are most useful when a project benefits from consistent Nest conventions; they are not a substitute for a general-purpose generator across unrelated stacks.

Builds and project organization

The CLI can compile an application or workspace, and it can compile and run an application. Developers can choose standard or monorepo mode; monorepo mode includes built-in library support. This gives teams a path to organize related Nest code together, though the choice is specifically framed around Nest applications and workspaces.

Integrations and deployment

The add command installs a library packaged as a Nest library by running its install schematic. The deploy command deploys an application to the cloud powered by Mau, extending the CLI beyond local development. That deployment route is useful for teams choosing Mau; teams with another deployment approach may prefer to keep deployment outside this command.

Version requirements

The CLI binary's minimum is Node.js v20.11, but schematics for new, generate, and upgrade require Node.js v22.22.3+, v24.15+, or v26+. Those higher minimums are a practical constraint: check the Node.js version used by your development environment before relying on the main scaffolding and generation commands.

Pricing

The Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and provides the MIT-licensed open-source CLI, installable from npm. It includes project scaffolding, custom templates, and CLI access, with TypeScript and JavaScript supported. There is no paid CLI tier to weigh against those capabilities. Nest also offers enterprise support, including technical guidance, architectural reviews, security and performance advice, code reviews, and long-term support and upgrade assistance; that support is a separate option for organizations needing ongoing expertise.

Platforms

NestJS CLI is a command-line application with npm and npx installation options. Its documented requirements are tied to Node.js and ICU rather than a particular desktop platform. It supports projects written in TypeScript and JavaScript.

Who it's for

The CLI suits developers and teams building Nest applications who value structured project setup, repeatable code generation, and commands for compiling and running their work. Monorepo mode is relevant to teams organizing multiple related Nest components with built-in library support. It is a poor fit for projects that do not use Nest, and the higher Node.js requirements for key schematics may rule it out in environments that cannot meet them.

Pros and cons

Pros: Scaffolding, schematic-based generation, builds, and run commands cover several stages of Nest development in one CLI.
Pros: Standard and monorepo modes, plus built-in library support in monorepo mode, accommodate different Nest project organizations.
Pros: The MIT-licensed CLI is free, and npx provides an option that does not require a global installation.
Cons: The command set is centered on Nest applications, limiting its value for developers working in other frameworks.
Cons: Schematics for new, generate, and upgrade require newer Node.js versions than the CLI binary itself.
Cons: Deployment through the CLI is powered by Mau, so it is not a framework-neutral deployment command.

Alternatives

For deployment rather than a Nest-focused development CLI, Laravel Vapor is a freemium option with a free Sandbox plan limited to 1 project and 10 deployments, plus an Unlimited Monthly plan at 39.00 USD per month, billed $39 /month; AWS cloud costs are not included.

For a free framework alternative, Buffalo supports Linux, macOS, web, and Windows. Echo, Express, and Koa are free options for Linux, macOS, and Windows. Play Framework is free and supports those same three platforms. FastAPI is a free web option. For a freemium web framework with an open-source LGPL core and a commercial edition with additional enterprise capabilities, consider SmartClient.

Verdict

Choose NestJS CLI if you are building Nest applications and want a free, structured workflow for scaffolding, code generation, builds, and running projects. Its main advantage is that these tasks align with Nest schematics and project modes; look elsewhere if you need a tool for other frameworks or cannot meet the Node.js minimums for its key schematics.
