Overview

Neovim keeps Vim’s editing model and Vimscript v1 compatibility while adding built-in Lua support and an API designed to be discovered and used by extensions. Vimscript remains supported, and the editor accepts Vim 8.x plugins and more, which gives existing Vim users a path to retain familiar tools while adopting newer extension options. The current stable release is 0.12.

That combination makes Neovim more than a configurable standalone editor: GUIs, IDEs and web browsers can embed it, and RPC lets extensions be written in many languages. Its project vision is to enable new applications without giving up Vim’s traditional roles. That is a clear advantage for people building workflows around the editor, though the command-driven model remains a substantial commitment for newcomers.

Neovim belongs among Text Editors, Code editors and Go IDEs. Its general-purpose editor and API features can support Go work, but it is not presented as a dedicated Go IDE.

Key features

Configuration lives in init.lua, and users can create Lua plugins easily. Vimscript support remains alongside Lua, so the newer configuration approach does not require leaving Vim-oriented scripting behind. The documented API is versioned and discoverable, while RPC permits extensions in languages including C, C++, C#, Go, JavaScript, Lua, Python, Ruby and Rust. Documentation names Node.js, Python, Ruby and Go API clients, plus third-party clients. This breadth is useful for developers who want to connect Neovim to their existing tools or build integrations in a preferred language.

Tree-sitter provides syntax highlighting and text objects based on parsing, while built-in LSP support enables semantic code inspection and refactoring. Those features bring language-aware work into the editor, but users still need to configure their preferred workflow around Neovim’s extensible model.

Editing features include multicursor operations that replay commands and mappings over marked regions, as well as macro recording, column editing and large-file handling. The multicursor approach is particularly suited to users comfortable applying repeatable commands across selected regions. A built-in terminal includes modern terminal features by default, reducing the need to leave the editor for terminal work.

Neovim’s source code is 30% smaller than Vim’s, and sponsor contributions go entirely to developers. These project characteristics may matter to contributors and sponsors, while the practical draw for most users remains its compatibility and extensibility.

Pricing

Neovim is free, with a free plan priced at 0.00 USD per free. The plan is licensed under Apache 2.0 with Vim-licensed exceptions. There is no paid tier to upgrade to, so the same free offering is the option for both individual editors and people building extensions. Parts of the codebase retain Vim licensing, a consideration for those evaluating licensing across a project.

Platforms

Neovim supports Linux, macOS, Windows and Android. Stable downloads are provided for macOS and Linux on x86_64 and arm64, and Windows on x86_64 and arm64. Tier 1 support covers Linux x86_64 and arm64, macOS x86_64 and arm64, and 64-bit Windows. Windows requires version 8 or newer; Windows 7 and older are not supported. Security vulnerabilities can be reported through Neovim’s GitHub security advisories page.

Who it's for

Neovim is best suited to Vim users who want to keep familiar editing behavior while gaining Lua plugins, language-server support and an API for deeper integrations. Developers who want to embed an editor or build extensions across different programming languages also have a strong reason to consider it. It is less suitable for readers who want a conventional graphical editor without adopting Vim’s editing model.

Pros and cons

Pro: Vim editing-model, Vimscript v1 and Vim 8.x plugin compatibility preserve familiar workflows while allowing a move to Lua.
Pro: A documented API and RPC in multiple languages make Neovim adaptable and embeddable beyond standalone editing.
Pro: Built-in LSP, Tree-sitter and terminal support bring semantic code tools, syntax-aware editing and terminal work into the editor.
Con: Its Vim-style editing model is a poor fit for users who expect a conventional graphical editor.
Con: Windows support excludes versions older than Windows 8, and Tier 1 support is limited to 64-bit Windows.
Con: The Apache 2.0 license has Vim-licensed exceptions, which merits attention in licensing reviews.
