Overview

Photo Curator is a free, open-source desktop-oriented tool for narrowing large photo libraries. It is best suited to photographers sorting thousands of frames after a trip or shoot who want automated help finding sharp, promising images. Its main appeal is a focused three-part workflow that runs locally, with the photographer retaining control over file changes.

Key features

Cull, group, and rank

Cull divides images into Sharp, Soft (recoverable), and Blurry groups using a contrast-normalized sharpness measure. The recoverable middle category is useful when softness alone should not rule out a frame, though the tool's labels still leave the final artistic decision to the photographer.

Dedup combines perceptual hashing, capture-time metadata, and ORB feature matching to cluster near-duplicates and identify the sharpest frame in each group. This can reduce repetitive review of bursts and similar shots without turning a suggested keeper into an automatic deletion.

Rank scores composition, lighting, focus, color, and contrast, then displays the TOP N with a radar chart for each photo. The multi-factor shortlist can speed up first-pass selection, but a score cannot account for every photographer's or client's priorities.

Formats, privacy, and control

Supported formats include JPEG, PNG, HEIC/HEIF/HIF, TIFF, BMP, WebP, and RAW formats supported by LibRaw. RAW preview, batch culling actions, and offline culling make the workflow more capable than a simple image viewer.

Photo Curator runs locally, binds its server to 127.0.0.1, and says photos are not uploaded. Its only optional outbound requests are OpenFreeMap tiles for the GPS view, loaded by the browser; the MapLibre library is bundled rather than fetched from a CDN. The security policy also requires a loopback Host header, rejects cross-site Origin requests, and restricts image endpoints to image files in selected or recently used folders.

Files are neither moved nor deleted until the user chooses an action; rejected images move only after the relevant button is pressed. That safeguard suits photographers wary of automated changes to a working library, though it means the user remains responsible for committing the cleanup.

Pricing

The Free and open source plan is free and is open source under the MIT license. It includes the described culling workflow without a paid tier or trial to navigate. The project invites support through Ko-fi, but no paid plan is part of the offer.

Platforms

Photo Curator is listed for Linux, macOS, web, and Windows, with local processing and offline culling. The offline Linux bundle is x86_64 only and requires glibc 2.28 or later; ARM and musl distributions are outside that bundle's support. Linux users on those systems should not assume the supplied offline package will fit their machine.

Who it's for

This is a strong fit for photographers facing thousands of images who want local blur sorting, duplicate clustering, and a ranked shortlist without handing photos to an upload-based workflow. Its free, open-source model also suits users who prefer software they can inspect. It is less compelling for anyone seeking AI-assisted culling, which it does not provide, or Linux users who need an offline bundle for ARM or musl.

Pros and cons

Pros: Sharp, Soft, and Blurry classifications preserve a review category for potentially recoverable frames.
Pros: Duplicate clustering uses three signals and identifies the sharpest frame in each group, helping with burst-heavy libraries.
Pros: Local, offline-capable processing and user-confirmed file moves keep photo handling under the user's control.
Cons: No AI-assisted culling, so users looking for that approach need another tool.
Cons: The offline Linux package excludes ARM and musl systems and requires x86_64 with glibc 2.28 or later.

Alternatives

Photo Culling Software is a useful place to compare more tools in this category.

Choose Vantage if an iPhone-oriented option matters: its free iPhone plan covers cleanup and duplicates from the last 30 days, monthly best photos, and space-saving tools. Its free tier is time-windowed in a way Photo Curator's free plan is not described to be.

FilterPixel is an alternative with a one-time Extra DeepCull shoot priced at 7.99 USD per once, covering one shoot up to 5,500 photos and never expiring. Consider it if a bounded, paid shoot package is a better fit than Photo Curator's free open-source workflow.

Selekt has a free plan with unlimited imports, culling, and export, on-device focus, exposure, and blur scoring, plus cloud AI for 100 photos/month and 1 GB sync. Pick it if those cloud AI and sync allowances matter more than Photo Curator's fully local approach.

SnapCuller is another freemium option for macOS and Windows users.

OptiCull is a freemium alternative for macOS.

Culvia is a free alternative available on web, Windows, macOS, and Linux.

Cullora is a freemium option for Windows.

FastPictureViewer Professional is a freemium option for Windows.

Verdict

Photo Curator is a sensible choice for photographers who want to reduce large local libraries through blur sorting, duplicate grouping, and scored ranking without automatic file changes. Its combination of offline use and free open-source access is the clearest reason to choose it. Look elsewhere if AI-assisted culling is essential, or if your Linux system falls outside the offline bundle's architecture and libc requirements.
