Overview

MPlayer is a free movie player for people who want broad media-format and streaming support across desktop systems. Its playback range and subtitle options are substantial; installation can take more effort than choosing a player with a maintained graphical interface.

It handles formats including MPEG, AVI, Ogg/OGM, ASF/WMV, MOV/MP4, RealMedia, Matroska and DVD, with hardware acceleration and playback-speed control. The project’s GPL version 2 license and zero-dollar price make it a practical option for users comfortable assembling and maintaining their own installation.

Key features

Broad playback and input support

MPlayer supports a wide range of video and audio codecs, including MPEG-1/2, MPEG-4 ASP, H.264, WMV, RealVideo, MP3, AAC, DTS and Ogg Vorbis. That breadth is useful when a media collection spans older and newer formats. Hardware acceleration can help with playback, though no specific hardware or performance guarantees are given.

Streaming inputs include HTTP and FTP as well as RTP/RTSP, MMS/MMST, MPST and SDP. This makes MPlayer relevant beyond locally stored files, but the input protocols alone do not promise compatibility with every online service.

Subtitles, display and encoding

Subtitle support covers formats such as SubRip, MicroDVD, SSA and JACOsub, as well as DVD subtitles and closed captions. That range benefits viewers working with varied subtitle files. An on-screen display provides status information, and multiple video output drivers offer options for different playback setups.

Playback speed control is useful when viewers want to adjust the pace of a video. The documentation also describes MEncoder creating MPEG program stream output files, but that capability is distinct from the core role of MPlayer as a player.

Pricing

MPlayer costs 0.00 USD per free under the GNU General Public License version 2. There is no paid plan or free-trial period to weigh against its playback features.

The trade-off is practical rather than financial: a complete installation requires source code and binary codecs, and the graphical interface also needs a skin. The download page recommends compiling current Subversion source for newer features and bug fixes, while also describing official Debian packages. Users relying on unofficial packages should note that the project directs support issues to those package authors.

Platforms

MPlayer supports Linux, Windows, Mac OS X, BSD, Solaris, HP-UX, AIX and QNX. That breadth suits people using less common systems as well as mainstream desktop platforms. The wider platform list does not remove the need to check how installation and codec setup work on a particular system.

Who it's for

MPlayer fits users who value format coverage, streaming protocols and extensive subtitle support, and who are willing to handle a more involved setup. Its GPL license and free price also suit users who want software they can use without a subscription.

It is a weaker fit for anyone who prioritizes a actively maintained graphical interface or a straightforward packaged installation. The included GUI receives limited bug fixing and is no longer developed, so users who depend on that interface should consider alternatives.

Pros and cons

Pros: Broad media and codec support helps with collections containing varied or older formats.
Pros: Streaming inputs, numerous subtitle formats, DVD subtitles and closed captions cover more than basic local playback.
Pros: Free distribution under GPL version 2 avoids subscription costs.
Cons: Installation requires source code and binary codecs; a GUI setup also requires a skin.
Cons: The bundled graphical interface is no longer developed, which makes it a poor choice for users who want an actively maintained GUI.
Cons: The project’s latest release is version 1.5, created on 2022-02-27; newer features and bug fixes are recommended through current SVN source instead.
