Overview

Mintlify serves both internal and external audiences, with a collaborative editor intended for contributors across engineering, product, support, marketing and writing. Its GitHub App deploys documentation when repository changes are pushed, which can keep published material connected to a team’s code workflow. Mintlify says its platform powers documentation for more than 20,000 companies and reaches over 100 million people annually.

Key features

Publishing and API references

Repository-triggered deployment is a natural fit for teams that already manage documentation alongside code. The API playground is generated from OpenAPI or AsyncAPI schemas, helping endpoint documentation follow schema changes without relying solely on manual updates.

AI search and collaboration

Mintlify generates a search MCP server so clients including Claude, Cursor, Goose and ChatGPT can search and retrieve documentation-site content. Support teams can also embed Intercom or Front widgets through the docs.json integrations field. Together, these tools make Mintlify more than a publishing destination, though the described strengths are concentrated on documentation workflows rather than general-purpose knowledge management.

Security and support

Mintlify says sensitive user and organizational data is encrypted at rest with AES256-GCM. It operates a responsible disclosure program and accepts vulnerability reports by email. Support is offered through email, in-product chat and a Slack agent, with a stated response to every request within two business days.

Pricing

Plan	Price	What it includes
Starter	0.00 USD per free	Five editor seats, full platform, custom domain, web editor, authentication, MCP server and API playground.
Pro	450.00 USD per month, billed monthly	Unlimited editor seats, 10,000 credits per month, $0.01 per credit for overages, agent, assistant, automations, preview deployments and admin APIs.
Enterprise	Custom pricing	Unlimited editor seats.

Starter gives smaller teams a meaningful publishing and API toolset without a subscription, but its five-seat cap can constrain broader collaboration. Pro removes the seat limit and adds automation and administrative tools, while its monthly credits and per-credit overages make usage relevant to budgeting. Teams that need unlimited seats beyond Pro can consider Enterprise, whose price is custom. Mintlify also offers a free trial.

Platforms

Mintlify is available on the web, Linux, macOS and Windows. Its desktop app is in beta; downloads support macOS 14 or later on Apple silicon, Windows 10 or later 64-bit, and Linux x86_64.

Who it's for

Mintlify is a strong fit for developer-focused teams that want repository-based publishing, schema-generated API references and documentation searchable by AI clients. Its cross-functional editor and support integrations can also suit teams publishing internal material or maintaining customer-facing help content. It is a weaker fit for a small team that needs more than five editors but cannot justify Pro’s price, or for teams whose documentation needs do not center on developer workflows.

Pros and cons

Pros: Starter combines a custom domain, authentication, API playground and MCP server at no charge, giving a small team substantial publishing capability.
Pros: GitHub-triggered deployment and schema-generated API references connect documentation updates to existing development work.
Pros: Cross-functional editing and Intercom or Front widgets support contributors and support workflows beyond engineering.
Cons: Starter is limited to five editor seats, making wider collaboration a reason to upgrade.
Cons: Pro starts at 450.00 USD per month, a sharp jump for teams that mainly need more seats.
Cons: Pro includes 10,000 monthly credits and charges $0.01 per credit for overages, so usage can add to the subscription cost.

Alternatives

AutomaDocs is worth considering for teams that want AI-assisted generation from a repository: its free plan includes one repository, 50 AI chat messages per month, GitHub integration and automatic sync on push, while Pro costs 39.00 USD per month. It is a lower-cost option, but the supplied plan details do not describe Mintlify’s broader API playground and MCP offering.

Documentation.AI may suit teams seeking a lower-cost documentation platform: Starter is free with five editor seats, one project and 10,000 one-time AI credits, while Standard is 55.00 USD per month billed yearly. GitBook is another freemium option for teams considering a documentation platform; its Free plan is for individuals and includes one free user, unlimited page views and 10 GitBook Agent messages per week.

Scribe is an alternative for readers considering a freemium documentation tool whose Basic plan works with any web app and offers quick customization and sharing by link or embed. Tango may fit teams focused on browser-captured workflows: its free plan includes five shared workflows, link and embed sharing, and up to 10 users per workspace.

InkLoom is an alternative with a free plan offering unlimited pages, a subdomain and one free user per project. Docny offers a free Hobby plan with one documentation project, custom domain, GitHub sync, integrations and analytics. Guidde is a different option for teams making how-to videos; its free plan allows up to 25 videos and includes web-app capture and shareable links.

Verdict

Choose Mintlify if your team needs a developer-oriented documentation platform that ties publishing to GitHub and makes API references and site content accessible to AI clients. Its free Starter plan is a compelling way to begin, but the five-editor limit and 450.00 USD monthly Pro price make the upgrade difficult to justify for teams that only need basic publishing or a few additional seats.
