Overview

MicroK8s is a self-hosted Kubernetes distribution that runs on everything from a workstation to a production cluster. It is a strong fit for developers and operators who want a compact starting point with a path to high availability, but it still leaves infrastructure operations in their hands.

Its case rests on a rare combination of no license fees, automated maintenance and security controls, with paid Ubuntu Pro coverage for organizations that need enterprise support and longer security maintenance.

Key features

MicroK8s is a minimal, CNCF-certified distribution packaging upstream Kubernetes services together. A single node can serve as a starting point; three or more nodes enable Dqlite-backed high availability and automatic recovery after a node failure. That is a useful progression for teams that want to begin small, though resilience depends on deploying multiple nodes.

Cluster API support automates cluster creation and lifecycle management through YAML manifests. It supports rolling upgrades for HA clusters and in-place control-plane upgrades for non-HA clusters. Automatic security updates are enabled by default, with rollback on failure, and Kubernetes upgrades can be run with one command. These safeguards reduce routine update risk, but do not turn a self-hosted deployment into a managed service.

Strict confinement limits MicroK8s and container workloads to explicitly granted files, system resources and hardware. Canonical maintains the core addons, while community addons widen the selection. Addon examples include Prometheus, Jaeger, Istio, LinkerD, Knative, DNS, a registry and a dashboard. The GPU addon uses NVIDIA GPU Operator and supports Multi-Instance GPU, making MicroK8s relevant to AI, machine-learning and HPC deployments using NVIDIA hardware.

Canonical advertises multi-cluster management, autoscaling, rolling updates and policy controls. Ubuntu Pro coverage advertises a 99.9% uptime SLA and up to 15 years of security maintenance for MicroK8s and related infrastructure; those commitments make the paid support options more relevant for production teams with formal service requirements.

Pricing

MicroK8s itself is free, with no license fees. Ubuntu Pro Personal is 0.00 USD per free for up to 5 machines. The paid Ubuntu Pro subscriptions are billed per machine per year:

Ubuntu Pro Workstation: 25.00 USD per year for a workstation subscription.
Ubuntu Pro with 24/7 Enterprise support — Workstation: 300.00 USD per year for 24/7 full support.
Ubuntu Pro Server with unlimited VMs: 500.00 USD per year, with unlimited VMs.
Ubuntu Pro with 24/7 Enterprise support — Server: 1775.00 USD per year for 24/7 infrastructure support and unlimited VMs.
Ubuntu Pro with 24/7 Enterprise support — Server full support: 3400.00 USD per year for 24/7 full support and unlimited VMs.

The free options suit personal use or teams that can operate without a paid support subscription. Workstation plans are aimed at individual machines; server plans add unlimited VMs, with the higher-priced choices adding 24/7 infrastructure or full support. These subscriptions are separate from MicroK8s licensing, so the main cost distinction is the support and maintenance coverage rather than access to the distribution.

Platforms

MicroK8s supports Linux, macOS, Windows and self-hosted deployment. Getting started can require as little as 540MB of memory, but 4GB of memory and 20GB of disk are recommended for workloads. The Windows installer recommends Windows 10 Professional or Enterprise and requires at least 4GB of available RAM and 40GB of storage.

Who it's for

MicroK8s suits developers who want Kubernetes on a workstation and organizations building self-hosted environments for production, public clouds, edge, IoT or embedded software platforms. Its low minimum resource requirement can help with constrained deployments, while the recommended workload resources are a more realistic baseline for useful clusters. Choose another approach if you need someone else to operate the cluster rather than managing infrastructure yourself.

Pros and cons

Pros: No license fees and a path from one node to Dqlite-backed HA make it accessible for development while leaving room to scale.
Pros: Automatic security updates with rollback, one-command Kubernetes upgrades and Cluster API automation reduce routine maintenance work.
Pros: Strict confinement and maintained core addons give teams security boundaries and common services within the distribution.
Cons: High availability requires at least three nodes, so a single-node deployment does not provide the same recovery resilience.
Cons: Self-hosting means the operator remains responsible for the underlying infrastructure; paid Ubuntu Pro is needed for Canonical's advertised SLA and extended security maintenance.
Cons: Windows deployment has comparatively specific requirements: Professional or Enterprise editions, 4GB available RAM and 40GB storage.

Alternatives

Kubermatic Kubernetes Platform is worth considering for an open-source community edition with Linux, macOS, Windows, API, web and self-hosted platform coverage; its Enterprise Edition has custom pricing.

Google Kubernetes Engine is the alternative to consider for a paid Kubernetes service with a free tier and trial, rather than MicroK8s's no-license-fee, self-hosted model.

Kubernetes is another free, open-source platform option for readers who want Kubernetes without choosing MicroK8s specifically.

KubeSphere offers a free, open-source Community Edition for readers seeking an enterprise-grade Kubernetes container platform.

Rancher provides a free open-source platform experience with community support; its Prime plan is an option for readers considering a separate paid tier.

Exoscale Scalable Kubernetes Service has a free Starter Cluster with a managed control plane, CLI, API and Terraform integration, making it a relevant alternative for readers who prefer a managed control plane.

HashiCorp Nomad is an alternative with a free plan and custom-priced self-managed enterprise and multi-year options.

Civo Block Storage is another freemium option for readers comparing infrastructure software.

Verdict

Choose MicroK8s if you want a no-license-fee Kubernetes distribution that can grow from workstation or single-node use into a self-hosted HA cluster, with automation, confinement and addons built in. Look elsewhere if you want a managed control plane, or if your production requirements depend on Canonical's SLA and extended security maintenance without a paid Ubuntu Pro subscription.
