Overview

MAXQDA supports literature reviews, content analysis, and work with interviews, questionnaires, and focus groups. Alongside qualitative and mixed methods analysis, MAXDictio provides quantitative text analysis, while Analytics Pro adds statistical analysis. That combination suits projects spanning several research methods, though the added capabilities are tied to separate products or licenses.

Its analysis sources are documents, and it supports sentiment and topic analysis. It does not offer entity extraction or intent detection. MAXQDA is an on-premise desktop product distributed by VERBI GmbH, which has focused on qualitative data analysis since 1989.

Key features

Analysis and statistics

MAXDictio extends the core qualitative and mixed methods toolkit with quantitative text analysis. Analytics Pro is the option for statistical work: it imports and connects Excel or SPSS data sets and includes descriptive statistics, crosstabs, ANOVA, independent-samples t-tests, cluster analysis, Pearson and Spearman correlations, and scale calculations. Researchers who need those tools can keep analysis within the MAXQDA offering; those who do not need statistics may not benefit from the higher-tier option.

Transcription and collaboration

MAXQDA Transcription automatically transcribes audio and video in more than 50 languages and can be used without a MAXQDA license. However, analyzing those transcripts in MAXQDA requires a valid MAXQDA or Analytics Pro license, so transcription alone does not remove the cost of analysis access.

TeamCloud provides a protected cloud workspace with 25GB of storage and one team lead plus up to four team members per license. That gives small teams a defined collaboration setup, but the stated capacity is not a fit for larger groups without additional arrangements.

AI Assist

AI Assist comes in Free and Premium options. Free is positioned for occasional single prompts; Premium supports frequent prompts, with six- and 12-month terms. Both have limited capacity, and unusually high or automated usage may be capacity-controlled, so neither should be treated as unlimited processing.

Pricing

MAXQDA offers a 14-day free trial for Windows and Mac, but no free plan for the main software. MAXQDA and MAXQDA Analytics Pro use annual subscriptions or three- or five-year licenses; prices are custom pricing. Each covers 1 to 20 licenses, while orders above 20 require a personalized quote. The standard MAXQDA option fits researchers who do not need the added statistical tools; Analytics Pro is the relevant choice when Excel or SPSS data and its statistical functions are part of the workflow.

AI Assist Free costs 0.00 USD per free and is intended for occasional single prompts, subject to limited capacity. AI Assist Premium is available for six or 12 months, with custom pricing and limited capacity for more frequent use. TeamCloud is also custom pricing, billed annually, and includes 25GB storage for one lead and up to four team members per license. These add-on and collaboration costs matter when budgeting beyond an individual analysis license.

Platforms

The desktop product runs on Windows and Mac, with the same interface and functions on both systems. The 14-day trial is also available for both. MAXQDA provides online support, tutorials, guides, webinars, workshops, courses, and a live product demo, giving new users several ways to learn the software.

Who it's for

MAXQDA is a strong fit for researchers and teams analyzing documents across qualitative and mixed methods projects, especially when quantitative text analysis or statistical analysis is also needed. Its transcription and TeamCloud options can extend that workflow, provided the required analysis license, add-on terms, and team capacity suit the project.

It is less suitable for someone seeking a free, full-featured analysis product, a browser-based workflow, or built-in entity extraction and intent detection. Its desktop availability is limited to Windows and Mac, and the main software has no free plan.

Pros and cons

Pros: Qualitative, mixed methods, and quantitative text analysis support a wide range of document-based research work.
Pros: Analytics Pro brings Excel and SPSS data connections and a substantial set of statistical methods into the product offering.
Pros: Transcription covers audio and video in more than 50 languages and does not require a MAXQDA license to use the transcription service.
Cons: Transcript analysis still requires a valid MAXQDA or Analytics Pro license, which may add a separate purchasing decision.
Cons: The main software and paid add-ons use custom pricing, making total cost harder to compare before requesting terms.
Cons: TeamCloud is capped at one lead and four team members per license, while AI Assist capacity is limited.
Cons: Entity extraction and intent detection are not supported, and the desktop product is limited to Windows and Mac.

Alternatives

Quirkos is worth considering for buyers who want broader platform availability, including mobile, Linux, and web, and a student cloud plan at 5.00 USD per month billed annually. Dovetail offers a web and API option with a free plan at 0.00 USD per free, including one channel, one project, basic chat, and AI summaries. DiscoverText is another freemium web/API option; its Professional plan costs 99.00 USD per month and includes 100,000 Units, 25 Live Data Feeds, one Professional Seat, and unlimited projects.

CallMiner Eureka is a paid web/API alternative with pricing that depends on user count or interaction volume, analytics modules, integration needs, and possible cloud or hybrid deployment. Relative Insight uses tailored pricing, requires a minimum one-year contract, and includes up to five hours of research support per month. spaCy, Voyant Tools, and CATMA are free alternatives.

Verdict

Choose MAXQDA if your document-based research needs qualitative or mixed methods analysis and may benefit from quantitative text analysis, statistics, transcription, or structured collaboration. Its breadth is the main reason to choose it; the custom-priced licenses, transcript-analysis requirement, and capped collaboration and AI capacity are reasons to look elsewhere if you need predictable costs, free full analysis, or larger-team flexibility.
