Overview

MasterGear is an emulator for several 8-bit SEGA consoles and computers, with a built-in debugger that makes it especially relevant to hobbyists working on software for those systems. It suits people who want broad SEGA-era hardware coverage across desktop and Android; the trade-off is that users must bring their own ROM images and compatibility is not complete.

Supported systems include Master System, Game Gear, SG-1000, SC-3000, SF-7000, Mark II and Mark III. The maker estimates that it runs about 98% of its SMS, GG, SF7000, SC3000 and SG1000 cartridge and disk images, while warning that some will not work. A BIOS is not required, but the distribution contains no game ROMs. MasterGear dates to 1996 and is associated with Winchester, Massachusetts.

Key features

MasterGear emulates the Z80 CPU, console video processors and SN76489 sound, plus Mark III YM2413 FM sound. That hardware coverage and the built-in debugger make it useful for hobbyists exploring or debugging software without rare development equipment. It also saves and loads emulation states, automatically handles GZIP ROMs and can log soundtracks to MIDI files. Save states have a portability caveat: files are not guaranteed to work across versions running on different hardware.

NetPlay is supported. On Android, users can connect over a local network or the Internet, exchange states, and play with a keyboard, gamepad, touchscreen or accelerometer. Named supported accessories include Bluetooth gamepads, Xperia Play buttons, iCade, Sixaxis and Moga gamepads. These options give Android users several control choices, though they do not change the requirement to supply ROMs.

The Android app does not share data with third parties, but may collect app and performance information and device or other IDs. Data is encrypted in transit, and data deletion is not available. For problems, the Android listing points users to the EMUL8 discussion group and gives luarvique@gmail.com as a support contact.

Pricing

MasterGear is freemium, but the desktop and Android terms differ. MasterGear Windows/Linux costs 0.00 USD per free and covers all Windows versions and 64-bit Ubuntu. It is the clear fit for desktop users who want to try the emulator without a purchase.

MasterGear Android costs 430.00 USD per once and supports Android 4.1 and newer. It brings Android-specific features such as State Exchange and NetPlay, but unlike the desktop plan it is not free. No subscription term is involved in the stated one-time price.

Platforms

MasterGear runs on Windows, Linux and Android. Windows support covers all versions; the Linux plan specifies 64-bit Ubuntu, while Android requires version 4.1 or newer. The different plan terms matter: desktop use is free, while Android has a one-time price.

Who it's for

MasterGear is best suited to SEGA 8-bit enthusiasts and hobbyist developers who value its debugger, hardware coverage and Android networking options. It is a poor fit for anyone expecting included games, complete image compatibility, or publicly available source code: users must provide ROMs, compatibility is not guaranteed for every image, and the maker does not make the source publicly available.

The maker also says companies can license MasterGear for products using SEGA games and can contact him about licensing the games themselves.

Pros and cons

Broad 8-bit SEGA coverage: Emulation spans several consoles and computers, including systems less commonly grouped with Master System and Game Gear.
Useful development tools: A built-in debugger and support for core hardware make it relevant to hobbyists working on software, not only players.
Android play options: NetPlay, State Exchange and several input methods add flexibility on mobile devices.
ROM and compatibility limits: The distribution includes no games, and the maker's estimate still leaves a portion of supported images that may not run.
State portability is uncertain: Saved states are not guaranteed to work across hardware and software versions.
Closed source: The source code is not publicly available, which may rule it out for users who require an open-source emulator.
Android costs more: Desktop users have a free plan, while Android use costs 430.00 USD per once.

Alternatives

For a different free emulator route, Virtual Jaguar is free across Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, web and Windows, but its open-source emulator core requires a libretro frontend such as RetroArch. Choose ares if open-source multi-system emulation on Linux, macOS or Windows is a better fit. Emulicious is another free desktop option, with personal use allowed and commercial users asked to seek permission first.

Genesis Plus GX may suit readers who want its standalone GameCube/Wii build, while noting its source code is under a specific non-commercial license. BizHawk is a free option with an MIT-licensed emulator and Windows and Unix releases. Dega is worth considering for non-commercial use, and PicoDrive for users comfortable manually installing release packages or ZIP archives.

MasterEmu is another free Android alternative whose maker describes the project as open source. For system-focused browsing, see Sega Master System Emulators and Game Gear Emulators.

Verdict

Choose MasterGear if you want a debugger-equipped emulator spanning multiple 8-bit SEGA systems, especially if the free Windows/Linux plan covers your needs. Its strongest case is the combination of hardware-specific emulation and development-oriented tools. Look elsewhere if you need included ROMs, complete compatibility, public source code, or a free Android option.
