Overview

Marmoset Viewer is a WebGL viewer for interactive 3D presentations built in Marmoset Toolbag. It suits artists sharing scenes online and developers adding interactive 3D to a site. It is a focused presentation option, but unsupported rendering effects and the difficulty of protecting browser-delivered artwork limit where it fits.

Key features

Scenes made in Toolbag export as optimized .mview packages for hosting or embedding. Viewer supports animated scenes, refractive materials, shadowed fog and shadow catcher objects, along with real-time and GPU rendering and presentation mode. Those capabilities make it useful for showing a scene interactively; the absence of measurement tools and annotations or markup makes it less suited to review workflows that depend on precise feedback.

Global illumination, screen-space reflections and ambient occlusion are unsupported. If a scene's appearance depends on those effects, its web presentation may not match the intended rendering, so this is not the right choice without accepting that trade-off.

For local viewing, a free standalone desktop app opens .mview files and can be downloaded separately from Toolbag. For web distribution, packages can be uploaded to ArtStation. A third-party WordPress plugin supports uploading and embedding, and developers can embed Viewer with its JavaScript library and embed utility.

Web rendering requires models and textures to be sent to the browser, so robust copy protection is essentially impossible. That makes Viewer a poor fit for artwork that must be difficult to copy. Marmoset's privacy policy says it may collect contact details, usage data, and cookie or tracking data, and notes that internet transmission and electronic storage cannot be guaranteed absolutely secure.

Pricing

The Marmoset Viewer plan costs 0.00 USD per free. Viewer is included with Toolbag versions 2.07 and newer, and the standalone Viewer app is free. The separate app is the practical fit for anyone who only needs to open existing .mview files locally; creating scenes for Viewer requires Marmoset Toolbag, so the free Viewer plan is not a substitute for scene-authoring software. The pricing note also provides a 30-day trial.

The free plan's scope is narrow: it supports .mview files and presentation, but not measurement or annotation tools. No seat or quota limits are given.

Platforms

Viewer supports web, Windows, macOS, iOS and Android. The maker describes Android support as less robust than support for Windows, OS X and iOS, so Android users should be more cautious about relying on it. The standalone app provides local viewing; web sharing and embedding serve browser-based presentations.

Who it's for

Viewer is best for Toolbag users who want to distribute an interactive scene as a web presentation, or recipients who need to open an exported package locally. It also suits web developers who want to embed Viewer through its JavaScript tools. Choose another workflow if the scene depends on unsupported rendering effects, needs annotation or measurement, or contains artwork that cannot be exposed to browser delivery.

Pros and cons

Pro: Animation, refractive materials, shadowed fog and shadow catcher objects support varied interactive presentations.
Pro: Free local viewing and several web distribution routes, including ArtStation, WordPress and developer embedding, offer options for sharing packages.
Con: No global illumination, screen-space reflections or ambient occlusion can constrain the final appearance.
Con: Browser delivery exposes models and textures to copying, and Viewer has no measurement or annotation tools for collaborative review.
Con: Android support is less robust than support for the other listed operating systems.

Alternatives

For broader 3D creation rather than a dedicated viewer, compare Houdini, which has a free plan and runs on Windows, macOS and Linux. Bforartists is a free, open-source 3D creation suite for Linux, macOS and Windows, making it an option for readers seeking creation software at no cost. Thea Render is a paid rendering option with a free plan and trial; its free Thea Node plan allows unlimited nodes on machines on the same network as the main integration.

LuxCoreRender is free for private and commercial use on Windows, Mac OS X and Linux, so it may suit readers seeking a free rendering tool instead of a web presentation viewer. Twinmotion has a free plan and supports macOS, web and Windows; its paid seat includes one-year upgrades and Twinmotion Cloud. ZBrush offers a free iPad plan with 28 brushes and a separate subscription, for readers looking at a sculpting alternative. AMD Auto-Detect and Install Tool is a free Windows utility for supported AMD Radeon graphics or Ryzen chipsets, rather than a 3D presentation tool. D5 Render has a free Community plan for non-commercial use, with official assets and AI trial credits, and a paid Pro plan for readers who need its professional tier.

Verdict

Choose Marmoset Viewer if you already create scenes in Toolbag and want a free route to present exported models online or open them locally. Its focused interactive presentation features and multiple sharing paths are compelling for that use. Look elsewhere when rendering effects must carry through unchanged, reviewers need markup, or model and texture copying is a serious concern.
