Overview

Vengi VoxEdit is a free, open-source editor for voxel volumes, scenes and animated assets, available on desktop and the web. It suits voxel artists who want modeling, animation, scripting and collaboration in one workspace. Its broad toolset is strongest when projects can stay in the vengi format.

The editor is under development, and the project invites voxel artists and developers to contribute. Its stated system requirement is OpenGL 4.3; support, feature requests and bug reports go through the project’s Discord server. Compare it with other Voxel Editors if your workflow depends on a particular platform or export format.

Key features

Editing and format support

Shape, stamp, line, extrude, sculpt, texture, paint and transform brushes cover both volume creation and surface work. VoxEdit can load and save many voxel formats, but vengi is the best-supported choice. Saving to other formats can lose scene details depending on their capabilities and implementation, so teams exchanging projects across tools should check compatibility before committing to a format.

Mesh imports can be voxelized, while models and scenes can be exported to meshes and other formats. Game engine export is supported, though the specific engines and export details are not established. These conversion options suit workflows that move between voxel and mesh assets, but they do not remove the format caveat.

Animation, scripting and collaboration

Animation includes layers, keyframes, automatic keyframing and IK constraints. Animations are saved only in vengi or formats that support animation, making format choice especially important for animated projects.

A Lua API, built-in editor and community script browser give users ways to automate or extend work. Network mode adds real-time collaborative editing and chat, useful when more than one person needs to work together. An MCP server lets LLMs control VoxEdit through its network interface; it requires both a running editor instance and server.

Model library integration

Integration with voxbox.store lets users browse, download and upload models, but requires a VoxBox account. That makes the store a useful part of the workflow for account holders, rather than a no-account asset browser.

Pricing

VoxEdit is free and open source. The VoxEdit plan costs 0.00 USD per free and is described as free and open source; it is under development. There is no free trial because the editor is offered as a free plan. Animation tools, game engine export, texture painting and scene editing are included. No paid tier or seat limit is stated, so this is a straightforward option for users who want these capabilities without a software charge, provided they can accept the development status and format limits.

Platforms

VoxEdit supports Linux, macOS, Windows and the web. The stated system requirement is OpenGL 4.3, a practical consideration for users evaluating desktop compatibility.

Who it's for

VoxEdit is a strong fit for voxel artists who need more than static modeling, particularly those using animation, Lua scripting or real-time collaboration. It also suits users who need to convert between voxel and mesh assets. It is a less compelling choice for projects that must preserve all scene details in formats other than vengi, or that need animated exports to formats without animation support.

Pros and cons

Pros: A broad brush set supports modeling, sculpting, painting and transforms in one editor.
Pros: Animation, scripting and network collaboration add workflows beyond voxel editing alone.
Pros: Free, open-source access across desktop platforms and the web avoids a software purchase.
Cons: Non-vengi saves can lose scene details, and animation requires vengi or an animation-capable format.
Cons: The editor is under development, so users seeking a settled workflow may prefer an alternative.
Cons: VoxBox store integration requires an account; MCP control requires a running editor and server.

Alternatives

Goxel is worth considering for a free desktop voxel editor with an unlimited scene size on its desktop plan, or if you need its listed Android and iOS platforms.

Blockhammer is another free option for Linux, macOS and Windows; its free editor is also in early access.

Mega Voxels is a mobile alternative for Android and iOS, with a free app and optional premium content licensing.

pixemboss may suit users who want a free browser editor that needs no installation or account to get started.

VoxShop is a free alternative for users considering a self-hosted or web option.

Voxel Builder is another free choice across Android, iOS, Linux, web and Windows.

Crocotile 3D is an alternative with Linux, macOS and Windows support, a free trial and a listed registration-code plan at 29.99 USD per month.

Facet is a web and Windows alternative with a free browser demo that saves and reloads JSON projects; its full version adds one-click OBJ export.

Verdict

Choose Vengi VoxEdit if you want a free, cross-platform voxel editor that combines modeling with animation, scripting and real-time collaboration. Its standout advantage is the breadth of that workflow without a software fee. Look elsewhere if your project relies on preserving scene details across formats or exporting animation beyond vengi and animation-capable formats.
