Overview

LogicalDOC brings document capture, search, sharing, workflow, and administration into one system. Organizations can deploy it on-premise, in the cloud, or in a hybrid setup, which gives IT teams flexibility but makes deployment and operating responsibility an important choice. The company has offered the product since 2006 and is based in Carpi, Modena, Italy.

Community is open-source software under LGPL version 3, supplied as-is without technical support from LogicalDOC and without some enterprise features. That makes it a practical starting point for teams able to support their own installation, rather than organizations that need a supported system from day one.

Key features

Capture, search, and organize

Bulk upload and email import give teams ways to bring documents into the repository. Full-text indexing and OCR make document contents searchable, while advanced search and metadata management help users retrieve and organize records. These tools suit organizations with sizeable document collections; their value depends on maintaining useful metadata and consistent intake practices.

Workflow and collaboration

Custom workflows, task management, notifications, shared calendars, and activity history support coordinated document processes. Automatic versioning, comments, annotations, and online editing help teams work on records without losing version context. The range is useful for process-driven teams, though organizations seeking only simple shared storage may have little need for this broader system.

Integrations and controls

Named integrations include Microsoft Outlook, Google Drive, OnlyOffice, DocuSign, and Google Calendar, alongside SOAP and REST Web Services APIs. Document action logs, granular role-based permissions, retention policies, digital signatures, watermarking, SSL/TLS, and encryption at rest address access, audit, and protection needs. These controls are relevant where document handling must be governed, but the Community plan offers only basic access control.

Pricing

LogicalDOC uses a freemium model, with a free Community Edition and custom pricing for commercial and hosted editions. A 30-day downloadable trial is available, as is access to a demonstration site that can be used without installation.

Community — 0.00 USD per free: Open source, basic access control, advanced search, web UI, and SOAP and REST APIs. It fits technically capable teams that can operate the system themselves and accept no LogicalDOC technical support. Its as-is terms and missing enterprise features limit its suitability for organizations needing vendor-backed service or the full commercial feature set.
Enterprise — custom pricing: Commercial edition; contact LogicalDOC for a quote. This is the commercial route for organizations evaluating an enterprise deployment.
Business — custom pricing: Commercial edition; contact LogicalDOC for a quote. It is another commercial option for teams that need more than the Community Edition.
Cloud — custom pricing: Hosted cloud service; contact LogicalDOC for a quote. It suits organizations, including small and medium-sized enterprises, that want hosted document management without managing a self-hosted system.

Commercial plans require a quote, so teams comparing budgets will need to discuss their requirements directly. After purchase, professional support is available by email, through a remote help desk, and via a tracking system; optional services cover deployment, migration, integration, and business-process implementation.

Platforms

LogicalDOC supports Windows, Linux, and macOS deployments and is offered as on-premise, cloud, or hybrid software. Its free iOS and Android apps connect to on-premise or cloud repositories and support viewing, uploads, collaboration, and notifications. API access complements those clients for organizations integrating the system into other software.

Who it's for

LogicalDOC is aimed at organizations with enterprise document-management needs across sectors. IT architects, analysts, developers, and system integrators are among its stated users, reflecting a product that can be configured and integrated as well as used for everyday document work. It is a stronger fit for teams that need governed workflows and deployment choice than for buyers seeking a basic, fully supported file-sharing service at a published price.

Pros and cons

Pros: Multiple deployment models, including hybrid, let organizations match infrastructure needs.
Pros: OCR, full-text search, metadata tools, workflows, and automatic versioning cover substantial document-management needs in one system.
Pros: Granular permissions, audit logs, retention policies, encryption, and digital signatures support controlled handling of business documents.
Cons: Community has no LogicalDOC technical support and omits some enterprise features, so the free edition is a less suitable choice for organizations that need vendor-backed operations.
Cons: Commercial and Cloud pricing requires a quote, which makes direct cost comparison difficult before contacting the vendor.
Cons: Self-hosting offers control but leaves deployment and ongoing system management with the organization.

Alternatives

Consider Foxit DMS if you want a freemium document-management option associated with Foxit PDF Editor and eSign subscriptions, with volume pricing and custom solutions available.

OpenFilz is worth considering if an AGPL-3.0 open-source, self-hosted option with a free Community plan is a priority.

Box is an alternative freemium service; its Individual plan includes 10 GB of storage, 250 MB file uploads, one file version, and five signature requests per month.

Hyland AP Automation is an alternative for buyers focused on enterprise accounts-payable automation.

SeedDMS is a free alternative for teams looking for document management on web, Windows, macOS, or Linux.

Mayan EDMS is another freemium option with web access.

DocuWare may suit teams considering a paid document-management service with a free trial; its Cloud plans include options for four users with 20 GB of storage and 15 users with 50 GB.

M-Files is an alternative for buyers willing to consider a paid product with a free trial; M-Files Essentials is 65.00 USD per month, billed monthly per seat.

Verdict

LogicalDOC is a strong candidate for organizations that need searchable, versioned documents, configurable workflows, and deployment flexibility, especially when IT staff can manage a self-hosted installation or the organization can budget for Cloud or commercial service. Its free Community Edition offers a meaningful open-source entry point, but the lack of vendor technical support and missing enterprise features are decisive drawbacks for production teams that need help or full capabilities. Choose it for breadth and control; look elsewhere if you need transparent commercial pricing or a supported free tier.
