Overview

MuPDF goes well beyond document viewing: it supports editing, rendering, extraction, signing, redaction, annotation, splitting, merging, compression, and conversion. Offline access and form filling broaden its usefulness for document work, while the lack of OCR makes it a poor fit for workflows that must recognize text in scanned pages.

Its inputs include PDF, ePUB, PNG, JPG, BMP, TIFF, GIF, SVG, PNM/PAM, CBZ, and XPS. Outputs include PDF, text, HTML, PostScript, PCL5/PCLM, PWG/CUPS, proofing, PNG, SVG, and PNM/PAM. That range is useful for software handling mixed document and image sources or delivering results in formats beyond PDF.

Key features

Document operations

Annotation, signing, redaction, and form filling support direct work on documents; extraction, conversion, compression, splitting, and merging serve broader processing pipelines. The breadth is a strength for teams consolidating document functionality, but it does not replace OCR for scanned material.

Developer bindings and deployment

Developers can use MuPDF Core, PyMuPDF, MuPDF.js for Node.js, JavaScript and TypeScript, or MuPDF.NET for C#. Artifex describes the core API as suitable for desktop, cloud/server, and embedded projects, giving teams several ways to integrate document handling. The choice of license is consequential: embedding may require a commercial license, and open-source server use requires disclosing the application source code to users interacting with it.

Support and security reporting

Open-source users can seek community help through Discord and the bug tracker. Commercial license holders can contact technical support by replying to their introductory email. Artifex asks researchers to report vulnerabilities confidentially through its secure reporting system and requests 90 days of confidentiality while it works on a resolution; it states that it follows ISO/IEC 29147:2018 for vulnerability disclosure.

Pricing

MuPDF uses a freemium model, with a free AGPL option and paid commercial licensing. The free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and permits unlimited distribution, but requires full source code disclosure, offers no support, and is limited to AGPL-compliant use. It suits users who can meet those terms; the source-disclosure requirement is a major constraint for proprietary or server applications.

The Commercial plan costs 299.00 USD per month and covers one domain per license plus one preview domain for testing. It is aimed at a product deployed on a single domain where avoiding AGPL code disclosure matters. The page also promotes a 30% annual saving but gives no annual amount.

Enterprise has custom pricing and includes one preview domain for testing. OEM Distribution License and Subscription License also have custom pricing: both provide unlimited distribution without code disclosure, with annual distribution reporting and support available, and charge per copy with a quarterly minimum fee. Annual reporting is not required for internal use under the Subscription License. These options suit broader distribution or subscription deployments, but per-copy charges and the quarterly minimum matter when forecasting costs.

A 14-day trial is offered. The published prices do not state a renewal schedule or seat quota.

Platforms

MuPDF supports Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, self-hosted environments, web, and Windows. This cross-platform reach suits teams targeting a mix of mobile, desktop, and server deployments.

Who it's for

MuPDF is strongest for developers building document handling into products or internal systems, particularly when they need multiple formats and operations across platforms. It is less suitable when OCR is essential or when a project cannot meet AGPL disclosure terms and cannot justify a commercial license.

Pros and cons

Pros

Broad document processing: editing, signing, redaction, conversion, and other operations make it useful beyond simple viewing.
Multiple development routes: bindings for Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, Node.js, and C# give teams language-specific options.
Wide platform and format coverage: support spans mobile, desktop, web, and self-hosted deployments, with varied inputs and outputs.
Commercial licensing avoids AGPL disclosure: paid options include technical support, and commercial licenses include free upgrades.

Cons

No OCR: scanned pages cannot be processed with built-in text recognition.
AGPL conditions can be restrictive: open-source server use requires disclosing application source code to interacting users, and product embedding may require a commercial license.
Commercial costs can be harder to forecast: some license types use per-copy charges and a quarterly minimum fee, while several plans have custom pricing.

Alternatives

For a conventional reader-first option, compare the PDF Readers category. Foxit PDF Reader is a free-plan alternative with viewing, printing, annotation, collaboration, form filling, and signing; choose it when those reader tools matter more than MuPDF's developer bindings and document-processing scope.

StarForce Reader is a free option for Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, and Windows. Javelin PDF Reader is another free reader for Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android.

KDAN PDF offers a free plan for viewing and editing PDFs, with annotation, notes, handwriting, and signatures; it is a reader-focused alternative for those basic PDF tasks. Okular is free software under GPLv2+ for Linux, macOS, and Windows.

Launchpad has free and commercial offerings for open-source projects and is available for Linux, web, API, and self-hosted use. Evince is free software for Linux, while SumatraPDF is a free, open-source Windows application with no ads or subscription.

Verdict

Choose MuPDF if you are building cross-platform software that needs a broad set of document operations and can work within its licensing terms. Its developer options and format coverage are the main reasons to choose it; look elsewhere if OCR is central to your workflow or AGPL disclosure and commercial licensing do not suit your deployment.
