Overview

LingQ supports 52 languages and uses reading, listening, and word discovery in context as its learning method. A placement test can help learners begin at an appropriate level, and personalized review gives them a way to revisit saved vocabulary. Premium members can study any number of supported languages at once, a useful distinction for multilingual learners.

The service is available on the web and mobile, with browser extensions for Chrome, Safari, Firefox, and Edge. Its maker, LingQ, was founded in 2007 and is based in West Vancouver, British Columbia. The homepage reports more than five million learners and a 4.7 average rating across the App Store and Google Play.

Key features

Bring familiar media into lessons: The LingQ Importer turns browser content into interactive lessons, and supported sources include Netflix, TikTok, YouTube, Spotify, Apple TV, Disney+, and Amazon Prime. That breadth lets learners work with material that matches their interests, but the free allowance of five imported lessons makes regular importing a paid-plan use case.
Build vocabulary in context: Learners discover and save unfamiliar words and phrases while reading or listening, then return to them through personalized review. This suits people who prefer vocabulary tied to real material; the free cap of 20 saved items is restrictive for sustained use.
Study offline: Offline access is included as a membership feature, which helps when a connection is unavailable. The service also offers mobile apps.
Earn points through participation: Tutoring, referring friends, and sharing Library lessons can earn points, offering community-based ways to take part.

Pricing

LingQ is freemium, with all listed membership prices in USD. The Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and includes 20 saved words and phrases, five lessons created from imported content, and one audio playlist. It is enough to sample the workflow, but its small vocabulary and lesson quotas are poor fits for ongoing use.

Premium costs 215.76 USD per year, billed upfront for a 24-month duration and recurring until canceled. It removes saved-word and imported-lesson limits and adds full sentence translations and offline access. This is the more suitable plan for regular learners who need room to import and save material, though its upfront, multi-year billing requires a larger commitment than a month-to-month subscription.

Premium Plus costs 269.99 USD per year, billed upfront for 12 months and recurring until canceled. It adds six times the audio transcription, AI voices, Advanced Lynx Chat, and AI-simplified lessons. It is aimed at learners who want those additional tools; the listed features do not make it necessary for someone who mainly needs unlimited vocabulary and imports.

There are no setup, long-term contract, or cancellation fees. Users can upgrade, downgrade, or cancel at any time, with plan changes taking effect immediately; trial or subscription auto-renewal can also be canceled at any time. Membership fees recur until canceled, so the upfront term and renewal matter when budgeting.

Platforms

LingQ runs on web, Android, and iOS, with a browser extension for Chrome, Safari, Firefox, and Edge. Its cloud, mobile, and extension deployment gives learners several ways to move between browser material and app-based study.

Who it's for

LingQ is a strong fit for self-directed learners who want to learn from media they already enjoy, save vocabulary as they encounter it, and study more than one language. The free plan works for a limited trial, while frequent importers or learners building a larger vocabulary will likely need Premium. Those who want more than the listed importing, contextual reading and listening, and review approach should consider another option.

Pros and cons

Pro: Imports from a broad range of popular media sources let learners make lessons from content aligned with their interests.
Pro: Premium supports all 52 languages and unlimited simultaneous language study, which is useful for learners juggling multiple languages.
Pro: Offline access, personalized review, and a placement test support study beyond the initial lesson.
Con: The free plan allows just 20 saved items and five imported lessons, so it is constrained for regular use.
Con: Premium is billed upfront for a 24-month term, a substantial commitment even though the price is expressed annually.
Con: Premium Plus costs more and its added AI and transcription features may not matter to learners focused chiefly on reading, listening, and vocabulary.

Alternatives

Learning with Texts is a free option for readers who are comfortable with its requirement for a modern browser and a local web and database server with PHP. Readlang is another freemium alternative for learners comparing reading-focused language tools. E-clair offers a free plan with limited collections and monthly transcription, with podcast episodes handled more generously. Beelinguapp may suit learners who want unlocked stories and news plus glossary and flashcard vocabulary practice. SpeakAccent has a free iOS plan for one learning language with a native-language podcast player and limited translation and study. News in Slow Spanish is a paid choice for Spanish learners who want an audio-only edition, with a single edition priced at 6.90 USD per month and automatic monthly renewal. TeakReader is worth considering for readers seeking higher usage limits, more translations, unlimited EPUB and subtitle imports, and offline dictionary downloads for 3.99 USD per month. FluentU is another freemium option, with a Plus plan at 11.99 USD per month that includes Netflix and YouTube video learning, a Video Dictionary, word lookup, courses, videos, audios, and flashcards. Verdict

Choose LingQ if you want to turn personally relevant media into language lessons and steadily review vocabulary in context, especially across several languages. Its import flexibility and broad language support are compelling; the small free quotas and Premium's upfront 24-month billing are the main reasons to look elsewhere.
