Overview

LexNebulis is a self-hosted legal practice management platform for small firms that want matter work and trust accounting together. It suits teams prepared to operate their own server; the main trade-off is taking responsibility for deployment and upkeep.

Its breadth makes it more than a trust-accounting tool: the platform combines client and matter records, documents, calendars, time tracking, billing, and legal workflows. Firms seeking hosted software should look elsewhere. Key features

Conflict checking, client intake, document templates and generation, e-signatures, and a client portal sit alongside core matter management. That scope can keep everyday legal work in one system rather than splitting it between practice and accounting tools.

Billing supports LEDES 1998B and 2000 export, UTBMS codes, and electronic invoice submission, which matters to firms whose billing workflows use those standards. Trust capabilities include matter-level billing, client ledgers, three-way reconciliation, and compliance reporting. Together, these make LexNebulis relevant to firms with trust-accounting obligations, not just those looking for general invoicing.

Stripe and LawPay are payment integrations; QuickBooks and CSV export support accounting workflows. Google Drive, Dropbox, Box, and OneDrive are supported storage connections. The range is useful for firms already relying on those services, though the platform’s self-hosted model remains a significant operational commitment.

Identity options include OIDC and SAML 2.0 single sign-on, SCIM 2.0 provisioning, and SIEM export through webhooks and syslog. Security measures include encryption at rest and in transit, bcrypt password hashing, JWT authentication, and two-factor authentication with TOTP or WebAuthn/FIDO2. Its append-only audit log uses a SHA-256 hash chain to make changes to the log detectable. These are substantial controls for a small-firm platform, but firms must still manage their own deployment environment.

The API documentation is reachable at /api/docs on a running instance. That can help teams building integrations, but it presumes they have an instance running and can operate it.

Pricing

Free, open-source: 0.00 USD per free. The self-hosted plan is under Apache License 2.0, and the software is free for commercial use. There are no seat or usage charges stated; the project describes its intended audience as firms with 1 to 50 users. The cost advantage comes with infrastructure responsibilities: installation requires Docker and Docker Compose v2, at least 2 GB of RAM, and at least 10 GB of disk. The installation guide specifies a Linux server and recommends Ubuntu 22.04 or later; macOS is for development.

Platforms

LexNebulis is available as a web application and API, with Linux and self-hosted deployment. It is not a managed hosted service: firms need a Linux server for installation, while macOS is supported for development.

Who it's for

LexNebulis is a good fit for small firms that want practice management and trust accounting in one product, especially those needing LEDES billing, reconciliation, client ledgers, or compliance reporting. Its stated 1-to-50-user audience gives small teams a clear target range. It is a poor fit for firms that want a vendor-hosted system or lack the capacity to maintain a server.

Pros and cons

Pros: Practice management and trust accounting share one platform, including matter-level billing, ledgers, reconciliation, and compliance reporting.
Pros: LEDES and UTBMS support plus electronic invoice submission serve firms with structured legal billing needs.
Pros: Broad payment, accounting, storage, identity, and security integrations cover several common operational needs.
Pros: Apache 2.0 licensing permits commercial use without a software charge.
Cons: Self-hosting puts deployment and ongoing server operation on the firm.
Cons: The Docker-based installation has minimum memory and disk requirements, making it unsuitable for teams unable to provide the required environment.

Alternatives

Choose LegalClaw if you want a free option for Linux or macOS. Affinity is a paid alternative available on API, web, and Windows. For document management, PerfectLaw DMS offers a webDMS subscription with 200 GB of storage or an on-premises option with document version management. Orion ePay is a paid option spanning mobile, desktop, and web platforms. Account Legal is a paid alternative with a free trial and a 1 Month plan at 19.94 USD per month, including multiple trust accounts and unlimited clients. BarBooks is a paid option with a free trial and an Enterprise plan. PCLaw and Aderant Expert Sierra are also paid alternatives.

Verdict

Choose LexNebulis if your small firm wants broad legal workflows and trust accounting without a software license fee, and can run its own Linux server. Its combination of legal billing, trust controls, integrations, and security features is compelling for an owner-operated deployment. Look elsewhere if you need hosted software or do not want server administration to be part of your practice-management decision.
