Overview

Released under the AGPLv3 license, listmonk combines list administration, campaign sending, and analytics in a self-hosted system. It supports single- and double-opt-in lists, SQL-expression segmentation, and management of millions of subscribers. That scale and control will interest operators with specialized audience needs; teams seeking a managed mailing service should favor a hosted alternative.

Key features

Campaign analytics track performance, bounces, and top links, giving senders practical signals for understanding how campaigns fare. Multithreaded queues can use multiple SMTP connections, with throughput and sliding-window rate limits. Those controls help manage sending pace, but they do not remove the need to provide and operate delivery infrastructure.

Template options cover Go expressions and functions, a drag-and-drop builder, a WYSIWYG editor, Markdown, HTML, and plain text. This serves both teams building logic-rich messages and those preferring visual editing. The REST-like JSON API exposes dashboard features and supports BasicAuth or authorization tokens. It can also send transactional messages from predefined templates through email, SMS, and WhatsApp messenger interfaces. Messenger web services can receive campaign messages as JSON for delivery through services such as SMS or FCM.

OIDC single sign-on and granular user and list roles support controlled access. These capabilities are useful for teams with distinct responsibilities, though they add little for a simple, single-operator setup.

Pricing

The Self-hosted plan costs 0.00 USD per free and includes free, open-source software. There is no software fee, but running listmonk requires a PostgreSQL database, version 12 or later, along with infrastructure and operational responsibility. The price is attractive for teams able to host and maintain it; it is not a turnkey hosted-service price.

Platforms

listmonk is self-hosted and offers API access and a newsletter website. Its download page provides 64-bit binaries for Darwin, FreeBSD, Linux, NetBSD, OpenBSD, and Windows, plus a Docker image. macOS and Windows support broaden deployment choices, but PostgreSQL remains a prerequisite on every platform.

Who it's for

Choose listmonk if you need substantial subscriber capacity, SQL-based segmentation, configurable templates, and API-controlled campaigns, and have the capability to run the application and database. Its roles and single sign-on may also suit organizations that need differentiated access. Look elsewhere if you want a hosted service or do not want to manage PostgreSQL and the sending setup.

Pros and cons

Pros: Free and open-source software under AGPLv3 avoids a software subscription fee.
Pros: SQL-expression segmentation and support for millions of subscribers suit large or specialized lists.
Pros: Broad template formats, campaign analytics, and APIs cover varied content and automation workflows.
Cons: Self-hosting and PostgreSQL 12 or later require infrastructure and ongoing operational ownership.
Cons: Delivery depends on the SMTP connections and other infrastructure the operator configures.

Alternatives

Mailchimp is a better fit for readers who prefer a hosted web service and accept a capped free plan: it allows 250 contacts, 500 emails per month, 250 emails per day, one audience, and one seat. OpenEMM is another free option for readers who want unlimited usage period, recipients, and mailing lists.

SendPulse may suit readers who want a freemium service with a defined free allowance of 500 subscribers and 15,000 emails per month. Twilio Segment is an alternative freemium platform with a free plan and trial.

arrobaMail may suit senders whose needs fit its free plan of 100 sends per month, while AWeber offers a free plan capped at 500 subscribers and 3,000 monthly emails. Brevo Conversations is a freemium option with a free plan for one user. Direct Mail is a macOS and iOS alternative with a free allowance of 150 emails per month.

Verdict

listmonk is a strong choice for technically capable teams that want extensive list, template, analytics, and API features without a software fee. Its defining advantage is the control and flexibility of self-hosted, open-source software; its defining cost is taking responsibility for PostgreSQL, infrastructure, and delivery. Choose it when that trade-off is welcome, and look elsewhere when a managed service matters more than control.
