Overview

Kotest is a Kotlin testing framework for developers building JVM or Kotlin Multiplatform projects. It is a strong fit when a team wants expressive test organization and property checks across targets; teams working primarily in other languages should choose a framework designed for those ecosystems.

Its components can be adopted separately, so Kotlin teams can add the assertions library to an existing JUnit or Spock setup without replacing their framework. That flexibility is more useful than a single all-or-nothing migration, though Kotest’s wider toolkit is most compelling when the project is already Kotlin-based. See our Unit Testing Frameworks guide for the broader category.

Key features

Test organization and execution

Multiple test styles include natural-language names and unlimited nesting. That gives teams room to structure suites around readable descriptions and hierarchies, but the variety also means a project should settle on conventions to keep tests consistent. Parameterized and data-driven cases reduce duplicated setup across inputs; conditional evaluation, lifecycle callbacks and parallel execution add control over when tests run and how setup is handled.

Assertions and property checks

More than 350 matchers, collection inspectors and soft assertions give developers several ways to express expected outcomes and report failures. Utilities for non-deterministic code also address cases where results can vary. These assertions are available as a standalone project, including for use with JUnit or Spock.

Property tests can generate hundreds or thousands of inputs, helping uncover behaviors that a short set of hand-picked examples might miss. The property-testing framework is supported across all targets, a practical advantage for Kotlin Multiplatform teams that want a consistent approach to checks beyond the JVM.

Tooling and integrations

The IntelliJ plugin adds test-run icons, editor results, a test explorer, structure highlighting and breadcrumbs, useful conveniences for Kotlin developers working in that IDE. Documented integrations include Spring, Koin, Ktor, Allure, Testcontainers, WireMock and Micronaut. Gradle, Maven and Kotlin Multiplatform setup paths give projects several build routes. Community support is available through Slack, GitHub and Stack Overflow.

Pricing

Kotest’s free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and includes the test framework, assertions library and property testing. Those are standalone projects, so users can take only the components they need. There is no free trial because the product is free, and no paid tier is presented; this makes it an uncomplicated choice for teams that need Kotlin testing without a software license charge.

Platforms

Kotest supports Kotlin testing on JVM, JavaScript, Native targets including Linux, Windows, iOS and macOS, Wasm, and Android unit and instrumented tests. The directory also lists Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, web and Windows. That breadth suits multiplatform codebases, although the framework is specifically for Kotlin rather than a general-purpose option across languages.

Who it's for

Choose Kotest for Kotlin projects that need JVM or Kotlin Multiplatform testing, especially when property-based checks, multiple test styles or reusable assertions matter. It is less suitable for teams whose codebase centers on JavaScript, PHP, Python or C++ and who want a framework aligned to that language instead.

Pros and cons

Pros: Property testing works across all targets, making generated-input checks available beyond JVM-only projects.
Pros: The standalone assertions library can extend an existing JUnit or Spock suite without requiring a switch to Kotest’s full framework.
Pros: More than 350 matchers and collection inspectors provide a broad vocabulary for expressing test expectations.
Cons: Kotlin focus limits its value for teams testing applications primarily written in other languages.
Cons: Built-in mocks are not included, so projects needing that capability must account for it separately.

Alternatives

Vitest is a free option for Linux, macOS, web and Windows when the project needs a JavaScript-oriented alternative rather than Kotlin tooling. GoogleTest is another free choice for Linux, macOS and Windows. Mocha is a free open-source JavaScript framework installed as a development dependency, suited to teams working in that ecosystem. PHPUnit is free for PHP testing, with PHAR download or per-project Composer installation.

Jest is a free alternative for self-hosted environments. Pest is free and supports Windows, macOS and Linux. pytest is a free open-source Python testing framework for Linux. CppUTest is a free option for Windows, macOS and Linux.

Verdict

Kotest is the right pick for Kotlin teams that want readable test structures, extensive assertions and property checks across JVM and multiplatform targets, with the option to adopt components independently. Look elsewhere if the project is centered on another language or requires built-in mocks.
