Overview

Kiro is an AI development environment that guides agents through structured engineering work. It suits professional developers and software teams that want agents to follow project conventions and check their output. Its strongest case is controlled, specification-led work; the free allowance is modest, and web sessions require a paid plan.

Key features

Kiro converts prompts into requirements, designs, and tasks for agents to implement. That extra structure can help teams clarify scope before code is changed, though it may be more process than a quick edit needs. Deterministic tools, including property-based tests, check correctness and alignment with intent—useful safeguards, but not a guarantee of correct code.

Agent hooks can update documentation, generate unit tests, or optimize performance in the background. Steering files carry project or global context, coding standards, and workflows into agent behavior, reducing the need to restate conventions. VS Code settings, themes, and Open VSX plugins offer customization, while MCP servers connect agents with external services, APIs, documentation, and specialized tools.

Kiro includes codebase indexing, multiple model choices, and a built-in terminal. Its web interface works with GitHub and GitLab repositories and can create branches and pull requests or merge requests. Cloud sessions are accessible from a phone through the mobile app, extending access beyond the desktop IDE.

Security controls include TLS 1.2 or higher for data in transit and AWS KMS encryption at rest; enterprise administrators can configure customer-managed keys. Kiro says it does not use enterprise users’ content for service improvement, while it may use Free Tier and individual subscriber content for that purpose. That distinction matters for teams evaluating the service with sensitive code.

Pricing

Kiro is freemium, with a free plan and paid plans priced per user per month. The free plan costs 0.00 USD per month, billed monthly, and includes 50 credits, open weight models and Claude Sonnet 4.5, and teams up to 500. It is a way to try the workflow, but the small monthly credit allowance can constrain regular agent use; Kiro Web is not available on this tier.

KIRO PRO: 20.00 USD per user / month, billed per user / month; 1,000 credits, premium models, add-on credits at $0.04/credit, and teams up to 500. A practical entry point for individual developers who need regular use and web sessions.
KIRO PRO+: 40.00 USD per user / month, billed per user / month; 2,000 credits, premium models, add-on credits at $0.04/credit, and teams up to 500. It doubles the Pro credit allowance for heavier use.
KIRO PRO MAX: 100.00 USD per user / month, billed per user / month; 5,000 credits, premium models, add-on credits at $0.04/credit, and teams up to 500. It is aimed at substantially higher credit demand.
KIRO POWER: 200.00 USD per user / month, billed per user / month; 10,000 credits, premium models, add-on credits at $0.04/credit, and teams up to 500. It provides the largest stated allowance for intensive use.

All paid tiers specify the same team ceiling and per-credit add-on rate; their stated difference is the included credit volume and price. There is no free trial. Teams that need more than the stated team size or different commercial terms should seek custom pricing.

Platforms

The desktop IDE is available for macOS, Windows, and Linux, with a web interface and mobile app also offered. Kiro Web requires a paid subscription, so the free plan does not cover browser-based repository work or phone access to cloud sessions.

Who it's for

Kiro is strongest for professional developers, software teams, businesses, and enterprises that benefit from explicit requirements, team conventions, and verification-oriented agent workflows. It is less compelling for casual users who want a generous free quota, free web use, or a lightweight assistant for unplanned edits.

Pros and cons

Pros: Specs, steering files, and deterministic verification give teams ways to make agent work more deliberate and aligned with project intent.
Pros: Background hooks, MCP connections, and repository workflows extend agents beyond one-off code generation.
Pros: Desktop availability across macOS, Windows, and Linux, plus mobile access to cloud sessions, offers several ways to work.
Cons: 50 monthly free credits make sustained use difficult, and web access is paid-only.
Cons: Individual subscribers’ content may be used for service improvement, a relevant consideration for private code.

Alternatives

For a wider range of AI coding tools, browse AI Code Editors or AI Code Generators. Choose Replit if you want a free plan with daily usage and one live project plus one background task at a time. Qoder is another freemium option, with a free trial and a limited free tier using basic models, limited messages and edits, and BYOK. Consider Tesseract, Devgrex, Cortex AI IDE, Creor, or Devin Desktop as alternatives; Dream is a free desktop IDE that requires an installed, authenticated supported agent CLI and an enabled model.

Verdict

Choose Kiro if your work benefits from agents that plan against explicit specifications, follow team guidance, and run verification tools, and you can budget for a paid subscription if 50 credits are not enough. Look elsewhere if free web access, a larger free allowance, or avoiding possible use of individual subscriber content for service improvement is more important.
