Overview

Wise is a cross-border money service for people sending funds to bank accounts, receiving payments from abroad or keeping an eye on exchange rates. It is best suited to individuals who value visible fees and the mid-market exchange rate; its variable charges make checking the price for each transfer essential.

Available on Android, iOS and the web, Wise also supports bill payments and payments to loved ones. The company was founded in 2011 and is headquartered in London.

Key features

Transfers and exchange rates

Wise supports bank-account delivery in more than 140 countries. Delivery is route-dependent: many popular routes take within a day, arrive the same day or are instant. The instant transfer-speed label is therefore not a promise that every transfer will arrive immediately.

Fees appear before payment, and Wise says it adds neither hidden fees nor exchange-rate markups. Transfers to another Wise account have no sending fee, but conversion fees still apply when currencies are exchanged. Funding options include Apple Pay, Google Pay, cards and bank transfer. Tracking, scheduling and the ability to repeat a previous transfer make the app more useful for recurring payments than a one-off-only tool.

Rate alerts notify users of exchange-rate changes and the mid-market rate. They help users follow currency movements, but do not remove transfer or conversion charges.

Security and account checks

Two-factor authentication protects accounts and transactions, while customer money is held separately from Wise’s own accounts at established financial institutions. Photo ID may be required for some currencies or larger transfers, so users should allow for verification when relevant. Wise says it is licensed in most US states and regulated by authorities worldwide; it also says it is authorised by the Reserve Bank of India and works with a local bank partner there.

Customer support is available by email, live chat and phone, 24/7 in English and in 14 other languages.

Pricing

The Wise personal account and transfers plan costs 0.00 USD per free. Registration is free, with no subscription; users pay variable sending and conversion fees that vary by currency and start from 0.33%. Wise also shows a 200 USD monthly ATM withdrawal allowance as free. The free account is a sensible starting point for occasional transfers, but it does not mean that sending or converting money is free.

Wise has no free trial. The main pricing trade-off is straightforward: there is no subscription commitment, but the total cost depends on the currency and transfer. Check the displayed fee before paying, especially for regular transfers or conversions.

Platforms

Wise is available on Android, iOS and the web. Its mobile apps cover both major phone platforms, while web access offers an option for people who prefer managing transfers in a browser.

Who it's for

Wise suits people who send money internationally to bank accounts, make recurring payments, or want to monitor exchange rates before deciding when to transfer. Its free registration and upfront fee display make it approachable for occasional use, while scheduling and repeat transfers suit regular payments. It is less compelling for anyone expecting every transfer or currency conversion to be free, or anyone whose recipient needs a delivery method other than a bank account.

Pros and cons

Pros: Fees are shown before payment, and Wise says it avoids hidden fees and exchange-rate markups, helping users see the charges before committing.
Pros: Bank-account delivery covers more than 140 countries, with many popular routes arriving within a day, the same day or instantly.
Pros: Scheduling, repeat transfers, tracking and rate alerts support planned and recurring payments.
Cons: Sending and conversion fees vary by currency and start from 0.33%, so free registration does not make transfers free.
Cons: Delivery speed depends on the route, and recipients receive funds in bank accounts rather than through a stated cash-pickup option.

Verdict

Choose Wise if you want an international transfer app with upfront fee display, broad bank-account reach and tools for tracking or repeating payments. Its free sign-up and mid-market exchange-rate model are appealing, but variable sending and conversion fees mean it is not a free-transfer service. Compare the fee for your currency route before relying on it for frequent payments.
