Overview

JupyterLab is a free, open-source environment for interactive computing, built around notebooks, code, and data. It is a strong fit for people doing exploratory technical work who want to shape their own workspace; teams needing a managed software service or formal vendor security assessments should look elsewhere.

Its range extends beyond notebook cells, but local installation and careful extension choices are part of the trade-off. The result is a flexible tool for analysis and experimentation, not a turnkey hosted workspace.

Key features

One workspace for varied material

Tabs and splitters let users arrange notebooks with text editors, terminals, and custom components. JupyterLab also views and edits Markdown, images, CSV, JSON, HTML, LaTeX, and PDF, and supports the .ipynb format used by classic Jupyter Notebook. That makes it useful when analysis spans code, data, and documentation. Exports include HTML, Markdown, LaTeX/PDF, and reStructuredText.

Interactive execution

Code consoles serve as scratchpads, while kernel-backed documents can run code in text files such as Markdown, Python, R, and LaTeX. Supported languages include Python, R, C++, Julia, GNU Octave, Ruby, and Scheme. This breadth suits scientific and data workflows; it does mean the environment is aimed at interactive, exploratory computing rather than a narrowly defined coding task.

Extensions, collaboration, and security

Extensions can add themes, file viewers and editors, richer output renderers, menus, shortcuts, and settings. Real-time collaboration can be enabled by installing the jupyter_collaboration extension, giving teams a collaboration option without changing the core project model. Extensions run JavaScript in the browser and can execute arbitrary code on the server, kernel, and client browser, so installing only trusted extensions is essential.

JavaScript and HTML outputs in notebooks created elsewhere are sanitized and withheld until the notebook is trusted. That safeguard is useful when opening notebooks from other machines, though users still need to make a deliberate trust decision. Visualization libraries such as matplotlib and Plotly are supported, but interactive plots or widgets may require additional packages.

Pricing

JupyterLab: 0.00 USD per free. The free, open-source software can be installed locally with pip; a Homebrew command is also provided for macOS and Linux. There are no paid tiers or seat-based plan distinctions in this offering. Users provide and manage their own local execution environment rather than buying a hosted service.

Project Jupyter describes its software as free to use under a modified BSD license. The project does not provide JupyterLab as a service and cannot complete vendor assessment questionnaires such as SOC 2 or SOC 3, which can rule it out for organizations that require those assessments from a provider.

Platforms

JupyterLab is listed for Linux, macOS, self-hosted use, and the web. It is web-based, with local installation options including pip; its execution model is local. This suits users who want to run their own environment, but it is not a centrally hosted JupyterLab service from Project Jupyter.

Who it's for

Data scientists, scientific computing practitioners, computational journalists, and machine-learning users are the natural audience: the workspace combines executable notebooks, consoles, multiple languages, and data-oriented file formats. It also suits people who value a configurable environment and can manage packages and extensions.

It is a weaker fit for organizations that need a vendor-managed service or formal SOC 2 or SOC 3 assessment, and for users who want interactive visualizations to work without arranging any extra packages.

Pros and cons

Pros: A single configurable workspace can hold notebooks, terminals, editors, and custom components, which helps keep exploratory work together.
Pros: Broad language and file-format support, plus exports, accommodates workflows that mix analysis with written material.
Pros: Free, open-source software with local installation keeps the tool available without a paid plan.
Cons: Extensions can execute arbitrary code across the server, kernel, and browser, making trust and selection a real security responsibility.
Cons: Interactive plots and widgets may need additional packages, adding setup work for users who rely on them.
Cons: Project Jupyter does not offer the software as a service or complete SOC 2/SOC 3 questionnaires, limiting its fit for some managed or compliance-oriented deployments.

Alternatives

Replit is a freemium, multi-platform option whose Starter plan includes free daily usage, one live project, and one background task at a time; consider it when those project and task limits suit your work.

GitHub Codespaces offers freemium cloud development with 2-core compute at 0.18 USD per month and 4-core compute at 0.36 USD; choose it when you want that metered compute model instead of JupyterLab's local execution.

Playcode has a free plan with trial AI credits, three projects or published sites, one collaborator, and required Playcode branding; it may suit work that fits those caps.

Coder offers a free Community plan with unlimited self-hosted workspaces, up to five active Coder Agents, and one platform integration; consider it when that workspace and agent model is a better match.

AWS Cloud9 has no additional charge for Cloud9, while AWS resource usage is billed at normal rates; EC2 compute and storage are charged separately. It may suit users who prefer that AWS-linked cost structure.

Datalore offers a Cloud Free plan with 120 CPU S machine hours, 10 GB cloud storage, two notebooks in parallel, and one workspace; consider it when a cloud notebook plan with those quotas fits better than local execution.

Deepnote has a free plan with up to three editors, five projects, and unlimited Basic machines with five; consider it when those collaboration and project limits fit your needs.

CodePen offers a free plan with unlimited public Pens and three files per Pen, making it an alternative when that format and cap suit the work.

Verdict

Choose JupyterLab if you want a free, extensible local environment for exploratory computing across notebooks, code, and data. Its configurable workspace and broad execution support are the core reasons to choose it. Look elsewhere if you need a managed service or formal vendor security assessments, or if you cannot take on the package and extension decisions that come with its flexibility.
