Overview

StackEdit combines Markdown editing with formatting buttons, keyboard shortcuts, syntax highlighting, and a live preview whose scrolling stays aligned with the editor. That balance suits both Markdown users and writers who prefer visual controls. Offline writing and local file support also make it useful when a document needs to remain accessible without a connection.

Its content support is unusually broad for a writing tool: it renders LaTeX mathematics, sequence diagrams, flow charts, ABC musical notation, and emoji markup. Writers can choose among Markdown Extra, GitHub Flavored Markdown, and CommonMark, and configure individual Markdown features. Export to Markdown, HTML, and PDF gives finished documents several useful destinations.

Key features

Sync, collaboration, and publishing

StackEdit can sync files with Google Drive, Dropbox, and GitHub, while shared workspaces, inline comments, and embedded discussions support collaborative review. When two collaborators edit the same file simultaneously, StackEdit merges their changes. These are meaningful advantages for teams working in Markdown, though the facts do not establish how workspace access or integrations are administered.

Publishing targets include Blogger, WordPress, and Zendesk. Posts can be uploaded as Markdown or HTML, and Handlebars templates can format output. That combination is useful for writers publishing to supported services; it is less suited to anyone whose destination is outside that set.

Offline and open source

Offline writing gives StackEdit a practical advantage over browser tools that depend on a live connection. It is open source under the Apache License, a useful fit for readers who value permissively licensed software. The maker credits Benoit Schweblin and displays a 2013–2019 copyright range.

Pricing

StackEdit is free: the StackEdit plan costs 0.00 USD per free. No paid plans or usage limits are stated, so it is a straightforward choice for readers who want the editor without a subscription. The maker states no plan caps or seat terms; teams should weigh the collaboration features without assuming a particular workspace quota.

Platforms

StackEdit is a web app, with supported platform entries for web, Chrome extension, and self-hosted use. Its browser focus and offline writing suit people who want to work without installing a conventional desktop editor, while those who specifically need a native desktop application may prefer another option.

Who it's for

StackEdit is a strong fit for Markdown writers who need multiple syntax conventions, technical or visual notation, offline access, and collaboration in one workflow. It also suits bloggers and support teams publishing to Blogger, WordPress, or Zendesk. A writer who only needs a focused desktop editor, or who publishes somewhere else, should compare alternatives.

Pros and cons

Pros: Offline writing, local files, cloud sync, and exports cover both drafting and moving documents onward.
Pros: Shared workspaces, simultaneous-edit merging, inline comments, and discussions make it useful for collaborative review.
Pros: Support for three Markdown flavors plus math, diagrams, musical notation, and emoji accommodates specialized documents.
Cons: Publishing integrations are limited to Blogger, WordPress, and Zendesk, which may not match a writer’s destination.
Cons: The platform is centered on web use rather than a listed native desktop app, making it a weaker fit for desktop-first writers.

Alternatives

For a native desktop Markdown editor, PanWriter is free, open source, and available for Linux, macOS, and Windows. HackMD is another web option; its free plan is 0.00 USD per free and includes up to three teammates, invitees, and custom templates, plus 20 GitHub pushes per month and a 1 MB per-image limit, so it may suit small teams comfortable with those caps.

MarkText is free and open source for Linux, macOS, and Windows, with no account or subscription. Dillinger is a web alternative whose free plan has no signup, paywall, or usage limits. Ghostwriter is a free option for Linux, macOS, and Windows.

Muesli is free and open source under AGPL-3.0, with web, self-hosted, and desktop platform support. Markra has free core features across Linux, macOS, web, and Windows, while AI features require a configured provider. Zettlr is a free option for Linux, macOS, and Windows. Verdict

Choose StackEdit if you want a free Markdown editor that can work offline, handle specialized notation, support collaborative review, and sync or publish through its named integrations. Its breadth is the main reason to pick it; its browser-centered platform and bounded publishing destinations are the reasons to look elsewhere.
