Overview

IDrive is a cloud backup service for people and organizations that need to protect several kinds of devices in one account. It stands out for combining file history, long-term retention, and broad restore options. Its main trade-off is that storage quotas matter: exceeding them can add a monthly charge.

Key features

IDrive backs up Windows, Mac, Linux, iPhone, iPad, and Android devices, as well as servers and NAS devices. That breadth makes it a practical fit for households or organizations with mixed equipment, rather than a tool limited to one computer or phone. Incremental, compressed backups transfer modified portions of files, which can reduce bandwidth use after the initial backup.

File history retains up to 30 previous versions, while Snapshots provide point-in-time recovery. Users can restore individual files, earlier versions, deleted files, or disk images, and can use IDrive Express. These options offer several ways to recover data, including after a ransomware incident; they are more useful than a current copy alone when files are changed or deleted. True Archiving keeps files in the account until they are manually deleted or Archive Cleanup is run, which suits users who want backed-up data to remain after it leaves the original device.

Files are encrypted with 256-bit AES in transit and at rest. Private encryption keys are optional and are not stored on IDrive's servers. IDrive also says it supports HIPAA, SOX, GLBA, and SEC/FINRA requirements, offers a Business Associate Agreement for HIPAA, and holds SOC 2 Type 2 and ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certifications. These credentials may matter to organizations handling regulated data, though the service does not replace their own compliance obligations.

Cloud application backup add-ons cover Microsoft 365, Microsoft Entra ID, Google Workspace, Salesforce, Dropbox, and Box. Team and Business plans let administrators manage multiple users through a web console or administrative account. Support is offered 24/7 by live chat, email, and phone.

Pricing

IDrive Basic is free with 10 GB of storage and no credit card requirement. It is a low-commitment way to try a backup account, but that small quota limits how much data it can protect. Basic can also be used to add services such as Cloud Applications Backup; that add-on includes a 7-day free trial.

IDrive Mini: 0.25 USD per month, billed monthly, for 100 GB and one user. It is the least expensive paid option and suits a single user with modest storage needs.
IDrive Personal: 11.99 USD per month, billed monthly, for 5 TB, one user, and multiple computers. It gives an individual substantially more capacity than Mini without adding team administration.
IDrive Team: 11.99 USD per month, billed monthly, for 5 TB, five computers, and five users. It fits a small group that needs shared administration, but its capacity is the same as Personal's, so the allowance must cover the team's combined backups.
IDrive Business: 59.99 USD per month, billed monthly, for 1.25 TB and unlimited users, computers, servers, Exchange, SQL, and NAS devices. Its broad device allowance favors organizations managing many endpoints, but its stated storage quota is lower than the Personal and Team quotas.
Microsoft Office 365 Backup: 20.00 USD per year, billed $20/Seat/Year, with unlimited storage and a 7-day free trial. This is a focused per-seat option for Microsoft 365 backup rather than a general device-backup plan.

Exceeding storage limits may incur $0.25/GB/month on Personal and $0.50/GB/month on Team and Business. That can change the cost of a plan if backups grow beyond the included quota, so estimate the data to protect before choosing. IDrive advertises first-year discounts and savings on two-year plans; check the applicable term before comparing renewal costs. Basic has no published price, so it is best treated as a free tier rather than a paid-plan benchmark.

Platforms

IDrive supports web, Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android, plus server and NAS backups. The combination suits users who need one service across desktop and mobile devices and additional business infrastructure.

Who it's for

IDrive is a strong fit for individuals, small and medium businesses, and other organizations that need backups across mixed device types, version recovery, and retention beyond the original device. Its Team and Business administration options, compliance support, and broad device coverage are relevant to managed environments. It is less compelling for users whose data comfortably exceeds a plan's quota or who only need a narrowly focused photo-storage service.

Pros and cons

Pros: Broad device coverage in one account. Computer, mobile, server, and NAS backups can be managed through the same service.
Pros: Multiple recovery paths. Up to 30 previous versions, Snapshots, deleted-file recovery, disk-image restoration, and IDrive Express address different recovery needs.
Pros: Retention is not tied to the source device. True Archiving keeps files until the user deletes them or runs Archive Cleanup.
Cons: Storage overages can raise the bill. Personal, Team, and Business have potential per-GB monthly charges beyond their quotas.
Cons: Business capacity is limited despite broad device coverage. Unlimited users and computers do not remove the 1.25 TB storage allowance.

Alternatives

For photo-first storage, Amazon Photos offers 5 GB of shared free photo and video storage, while its Amazon Prime benefit includes unlimited full-resolution photos; choose it when photo storage is the priority rather than mixed device backup. Ente Photos has a free 10 GB plan and a 50 GB Starter family plan at 2.49 USD per month, making it a more photo-focused choice for readers who want that capacity and family arrangement.

Cryptee is an alternative with a free 100 MB plan and open-source software and cryptography that can be reviewed independently. Flickr offers a free tier capped at 1,000 public photo and video uploads with ads, so it better fits public photo sharing than broad device backup. Synology Photos is free but requires a Synology NAS, making it the choice for people already using that hardware.

Google Photos, Noodle Gallery, and Permafiles are other alternatives to consider.

Verdict

Choose IDrive if you need one service for backups across computers, phones, servers, or NAS devices, and value version history, archival retention, and several restore routes. Its breadth is the reason to choose it; the storage quota and possible overage charges are the reason to look elsewhere or size a plan carefully.
