Overview

Built on the Orton-Gillingham approach, Reading Mountain uses multisensory lessons to teach reading and spelling. Levels 1 to 3 are available; Levels 4 and 5 are in development, and Levels 6 to 16 are planned by the end of 2026. Because there is no placement assessment, the recommended starting point is Level 1, Lesson 1. That gives beginners a clear entry point, but may mean unnecessary early lessons for readers already beyond that material.

The recommended pace is about two hours each week, divided into short sessions such as four 30-minute sessions. This offers families and instructors a concrete routine, while still requiring regular adult support to guide practice.

Key features

Lessons combine reading tiles, spelling tiles, words, sentences, writing, decodable books, and games. Students read at least one decodable book per lesson, supported by AI and comprehension questions. The range of activities lets learners practice several literacy skills within a lesson rather than concentrating on isolated drills.

Speech detection flags sounds and words a learner may struggle with. AI also generates reading-pattern insights and book reading-accuracy scores, while the parent and instructor portal provides progress reports and printable customized worksheets after lessons. These features give adults concrete material for follow-up; the lack of a placement assessment, however, means progress tools do not resolve the question of where a learner should begin.

Basecamp is a separate free app without a login, focused on phonemic awareness activities: sound segmenting, sound isolation, blending, and sound-swapping. It is a useful no-cost starting point for those skills, but it is not the paid program's full lesson sequence.

Pricing

Plan	Price	Includes
Basecamp	Free	Separate phonemic-awareness app; no login
Individual	29.00 USD per month	1 student; all levels and lessons
Family	49.00 USD per month	Up to 4 students; all levels and lessons

Individual suits one learner, while Family accommodates households with up to four students for $20 more per month. Basecamp costs nothing but provides only the separate phonemic-awareness activities, not the full lessons. The paid plans include all levels and lessons, though only Levels 1 to 3 are currently available. A free trial is offered.

Platforms

Reading Mountain works on Apple and Android phones and tablets, and on laptops and computers through a browser. That mix suits families and instructors who want to move between mobile practice and a computer-based portal.

Who it's for

Reading Mountain is best suited to early or struggling readers, including learners with dyslexia, whose families or instructors want structured practice plus reports and printable follow-up work. Its all-ages range makes it relevant beyond children, but the Level 1 starting recommendation and current Level 1-to-3 scope may not suit readers who need more advanced instruction.

The privacy policy says the app collects student names and instructor name and email for educational purposes and does not sell user data. It says the app complies with COPPA and gives parents or guardians rights to access, delete, or stop collection of a child's data. Trusted service providers such as Google Firebase may host data solely to operate the app.

Pros and cons

Pros: Lessons combine reading, spelling, writing, games, and decodable books, giving learners practice across several literacy activities.
Pros: AI feedback, accuracy scores, progress reports, and customized worksheets give parents and instructors material to guide follow-up.
Pros: The free Basecamp app offers four phonemic-awareness activities without requiring a login.
Cons: Without a placement assessment, every learner is directed to Level 1, Lesson 1, which may be a poor starting point for readers with stronger skills.
Cons: Only Levels 1 to 3 are available now, limiting the current scope for learners ready for more advanced material.

Alternatives

Dyslexia Learning Apps is a useful place to compare options across the category. Consider Lexy instead if you want a free plan for up to five students with AI tutoring, voice-based learning, and adaptive phonics across iOS, macOS, and web. DytectiveU is another option to compare, with free plans for schools in Spain and therapists. Choose Cody Reading if web access and a free allowance of three decodable stories per week for one user matter most. EduFlip may suit someone seeking a free, self-paced Level 1 plan for one student profile. Grafari is worth considering if you want a paid option across Android, iOS, macOS, web, and Windows. Legasthenie & LRS Trainer is another freemium option on web, iOS, and Android. OgStar Reading offers a freemium option on web and iOS. SPIRE Up is a paid option on web and iOS.

Verdict

Choose Reading Mountain if you want structured, multisensory literacy lessons for an early or struggling reader, with AI feedback and tools for adults to reinforce practice. Its main drawbacks are the Level 1 starting point without placement and the present ceiling at Level 3; look elsewhere if the learner needs a more advanced entry level now.
