Overview

Built by Tailscale Inc., founded in 2019, Tailscale uses WireGuard to establish low-latency connections between devices. The company says those connections are end-to-end encrypted and that it cannot read users’ traffic. As a software-as-a-service product, it brings together VPN management, firewall policy management, network monitoring, and infrastructure as code, with coverage for AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud Platform, and Oracle Cloud.

The service is more than a way to connect devices: administrators can manage access, identity provisioning, and device requirements in the same network. That makes it a stronger fit for households and managed teams than for buyers seeking only a basic VPN connection.

Key features

Identity-based access

Access control lists let administrators decide which users can reach which devices. Authentication through supported identity providers and SCIM provisioning for users and groups help fit Tailscale into an organization’s identity management. Its integrations include 23 identity providers, among them Okta, Google, Microsoft Entra ID, GitHub, and Apple ID. The trade-off is that the number of ACL groups is capped by plan, which matters as access rules grow more complex.

Monitoring and device security

Configuration audit logs and network flow logs offer visibility into changes and network activity; webhooks and SIEM log streaming extend how teams can use that information. Device posture attributes and integrations such as CrowdStrike can feed into connectivity rules, allowing administrators to restrict access from devices that fail security requirements. SOC 2 Type II certification covers security, availability, and confidentiality.

Sharing and support

Taildrop transfers files between devices, while node sharing lets a user share a node with another Tailscale user without exposing it to the public internet. Documentation, a support request form, and community channels provide support routes, with plan-dependent levels; Premium includes priority support.

Pricing

Personal is 0.00 USD per free, billed Free forever. It allows up to 6 users, unlimited user devices, up to 3 ACL groups, 50 tagged resources to start, and 1,000 minutes per month for ephemeral resources. It is a sensible fit for a homelab or home VPN, but not for commercial use. Additional tagged resources cost 1.00 USD per month for every tagged resource.

Standard is 8.00 USD per user, per month, with unlimited users, up to 10 ACL groups, and 1,000 minutes per month for ephemeral resources. It is the entry point for commercial teams, though the group cap may constrain more elaborate access policies. Premium is 18.00 USD per user, per month; it raises the limit to 300 ACL groups and 10,000 minutes per month for ephemeral resources, and adds priority support. That increase makes sense for organizations with more rules, resource activity, or support needs.

Enterprise has custom pricing and offers custom device quantities and limits, implementation assistance, custom SLAs, and Premium support. It is for organizations that need terms beyond the published tiers. A Mullvad add-on is 5.00 USD per month for every 5 devices. Tailscale also offers a 14-day trial.

Platforms

Tailscale supports Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, web, and Windows, giving mixed-device households and teams broad coverage.

Who it's for

Choose Tailscale for a non-commercial home network or a team that wants private device connections alongside identity-driven access controls, provisioning, monitoring, and posture-based rules. It is less suitable for commercial use on the free tier, or for buyers who do not need those controls and would rather avoid per-user paid pricing.

Pros and cons

Pros: End-to-end encrypted WireGuard connections combine low-latency peer-to-peer networking with administrator-defined access rules.
Pros: Identity-provider integrations and SCIM provisioning support user and group management for teams.
Pros: Logs, SIEM streaming, and device posture rules give administrators visibility and ways to restrict access.
Cons: Personal is limited to non-commercial use, up to 6 users, and 3 ACL groups.
Cons: Standard costs 8.00 USD per user, per month, while Premium costs 18.00 USD per user, per month; growing teams therefore pay by user.

Alternatives

Cloudflare Access is worth comparing if its free plan for under 50 users or its 7.00 USD per month Pay-as-you-go plan better matches your budget; it also has a free trial and broad platform coverage. Consider ZeroTier if you want a different freemium networking option: its Personal plan lists 10 devices, 1 network, and 1 network admin, while Essential costs 18.00 USD per month and includes 10 devices.

Cilium is a free, open-source option for Linux environments that meet its Linux kernel >= 5.10 or equivalent and AMD64 or AArch64 requirements. For other network-management approaches, Infoblox Cloud Network Automation uses token-based licensing, EfficientIP SOLIDserver DDI offers hardware and virtual appliances, and F5 BIG-IP APM is available on BIG-IP Virtual Editions, hardware, or hybrid environments. NetBox is another freemium option, while Alkira is a paid web-based alternative.

Verdict

Tailscale is a strong choice for home users who can stay within Personal’s non-commercial limits and for teams that want encrypted device connections governed by identity, device posture, and access rules. Its clearest reason to choose it is the combination of connectivity and administrative control; look elsewhere if per-user pricing or the free plan’s restrictions do not suit your use.
