Overview

Macro Recorder turns recorded mouse and keyboard activity into repeatable desktop procedures on Windows and macOS. It suits people who need to automate tasks on a computer and want to refine the sequence or make clicks respond to what appears on screen. Its desktop focus is a strength for those routines, but the personal-use restrictions and single-platform license make it a poor fit for organizational use or simultaneous work across Mac and Windows.

Key features

Each recording becomes a sequence of individual actions that can be edited or reordered, and users can build macros one step at a time instead. That makes it easier to correct a routine than relying on an untouched capture. Macro Recorder remains centered on desktop activity, so it is less suited to workflows whose automation needs extend beyond the computer.

SmartClick searches around a captured click target for matching visual context during playback, then clicks when it finds it. Professional adds SmartClick, image and OCR text recognition, a scheduler, and command-line parameters. These features are useful when a macro needs to respond to screen content or run under more control than a basic replay; they are not included in the lower editions.

Screen capture can extract images and OCR text, as well as barcode or QR-code data into variables. Enterprise adds variables and barcode and QR-code support, along with AI and PhraseExpress support. AI integrations can be cloud-based or self-hosted, including OpenAI and local models such as Llama and DeepSeek; AI is optional and disabled by default. PhraseExpress can organize macros, trigger them through hotkeys or text shortcuts, and share them over a network, but this use requires Enterprise licenses for both products.

The maker says Macro Recorder runs locally and sends no data to third parties or the maker, aside from optional update checks and one-time license activation. Support comes directly from the product builders, though freeware users must pay to receive support.

Pricing

All four editions have custom pricing. The license is a one-time purchase with no recurring payment and covers versions released during its maintenance term for life. One license is for either one Mac or one Windows user; it cannot be used simultaneously on both computers.

Freeware: Allows 10 repetitions. It is for personal use only: company or organizational use, paid-edition features, and financially beneficial use after 30 days require a license. This cap makes it a limited option for evaluating or using simple personal routines.
Standard: Adds more than 10 repetitions, program execution, and Goto and repeat. It fits users who need longer or more controlled macros but do not need visual recognition.
Professional: Adds SmartClick, image and OCR recognition, Macro Scheduler, and command-line parameters. Choose it when screen-aware actions or scheduled and parameterized runs matter.
Enterprise: Adds PhraseExpress and AI support, variables, and barcode and QR-code support. It is the relevant edition for those integrations, though PhraseExpress use also requires its Enterprise license.

Platforms

Macro Recorder runs on Windows and macOS, with scheduled runs, app triggers, browser automation, and desktop recording supported. The maker has no plan for a Linux version at this time. The single-platform license rule matters for anyone switching between Mac and Windows: one license cannot run on both at once.

Who it's for

Choose Macro Recorder for repeatable desktop procedures that benefit from editable steps, visual recognition, or local execution. The freeware edition is narrowly suitable for personal use within its repetition and use restrictions; paid editions are the practical route for work-related or financially beneficial use. It is not a fit for Linux users or organizations seeking a license that runs concurrently across Mac and Windows.

Pros and cons

Pro: Editable actions and step-by-step composition let users correct or refine a routine instead of treating the recording as fixed.
Pro: SmartClick, OCR, scheduling, and command-line options provide more control for screen-dependent routines in Professional.
Pro: The lifetime license has no recurring payment, and the maker says the software runs locally with AI off by default.
Con: Freeware is capped at 10 repetitions and excludes organizational use and paid-edition features; financially beneficial use requires purchase after 30 days.
Con: One license covers either a Mac or a Windows user, not simultaneous use on both computers.
Con: Freeware users do not receive product support, and Linux is not supported.

Alternatives

For automation beyond desktop replays, Make offers a web and mobile service with a free plan of up to 1,000 credits per month, two active scenarios, and a 15-minute minimum interval. Ui.Vision RPA is another freemium option and supports Linux as well as Windows and macOS. IFTTT is a web and mobile alternative whose free plan allows two applets with unlimited runs. Windmill is worth considering for a self-hosted or Linux-compatible option; its free plan includes three workspaces and up to 50 users. Activepieces offers web, API, or self-hosted flows, with a free plan of 1,000 monthly credits and unlimited flows for one user. Browserflow is a browser-focused alternative with a free plan that includes unlimited desktop runs capped at one minute each and 30 minutes of cloud automation monthly. MacroDroid is the Android option, with an ad-supported free version limited to five macros. Zapier is a web-based alternative with a free plan limited to 100 tasks per month.

Verdict

Macro Recorder is a solid choice for individuals automating repeatable Windows or Mac desktop work, especially when editable steps and screen-aware actions are useful. Its one-time license and local-first operation are appealing, but check the personal-use rules before relying on freeware at work, and look elsewhere if you need Linux support or one license active on both platforms.
