Overview

Hornbill IT Asset Management is a cloud service for tracking hardware, software, cloud, and on-premise assets through their lifecycle. It suits organizations that want asset records connected to service operations and employee requests. Its breadth is compelling, but custom pricing means buyers must establish cost and support fit before committing.

Key features

Discovery with service context

Automated discovery covers cloud and on-premise hardware and software, with discovery imports, ownership tracking, service mapping, and dependency mapping. Connecting assets to services and dependencies can help teams understand what an asset supports; organizations that need only a simple inventory may find this wider service-management scope unnecessary.

License, contract, and cost control

The license view compares licenses owned with licenses in use, a practical aid for monitoring spend and responding to vendor audits. Contract tracking and reporting for capital, operating, and support costs add useful visibility for IT finance and procurement. These are meaningful controls for a complex estate, though the product does not promise a particular savings or audit outcome.

Workflow and employee services

Drag-and-drop or codeless workflows can automate ITAM work such as application provisioning and patch deployment. Employee self-service, a portal, service and request catalogs, knowledge bases, omnichannel case intake, and SLA tracking extend the product beyond inventory. HR knowledge, HR case management, and HRIS synchronization also make it relevant to non-IT departments. That breadth is an advantage for organizations consolidating service processes, but may be more than an asset-focused team needs.

Integrations and security

Hornbill describes hundreds of codeless integrations, including Microsoft Intune for endpoint management, and a shared data model intended to connect ITAM with IT operations, IT service management, and security. Hornbill states that its data centers are SOC 2 Type II and SOC 3 Type II certified; browser connections use HTTPS/SSL, and other data in transit uses secure protocols. Its ITOM discovery service runs through a downloadable Site Integration Service for Windows Server, a deployment consideration for teams using that companion service.

Pricing

Hornbill IT Asset Management has custom pricing tailored to requirements, with scalable packages. No published seat or usage cap is attached to the plan, so buyers should request a quote for their expected estate and confirm the package scope. A free plan is offered, but its limits and terms are not defined here; it should not be treated as a known-cost substitute for a paid deployment.

The subscription includes the Essential Success Plan: 24×7 online assistance for critical service availability issues, community forums, knowledge resources, APIs, and up to three named contacts. Organizations needing broader support can consider paid Premier or Custom Concierge plans. The included plan's critical-availability focus and three-contact limit may not be sufficient for teams seeking wider direct support.

Platforms

The product supports web, Windows, Android, iOS, and API access, and is deployed in the cloud. This mix serves browser-based teams and organizations integrating it with other systems; cloud deployment is the stated option.

Who it's for

Hornbill is best suited to organizations managing assets across cloud and on-premise environments that also want license, contract, cost, and workflow controls tied to employee services. Its service mapping, integrations, and HR capabilities can serve teams spanning IT and other departments. It is a weaker fit for buyers who need straightforward asset tracking at a known price or do not need the adjacent service-management functions.

Pros and cons

Pros

Automated discovery, imports, ownership records, and service and dependency mapping connect inventory to operational context.
License comparison plus contract and cost tracking supports oversight across software and IT spending.
Codeless workflows and employee-facing service tools cover provisioning, patch deployment, and request handling.
Hundreds of codeless integrations and a shared data model are designed to connect multiple service teams.

Cons

Custom pricing makes budget comparison difficult before a tailored quote.
The free plan's caps and terms are not defined, limiting its usefulness for planning a deployment.
Included support is limited to critical availability assistance and up to three named contacts; expanded plans cost extra.
The breadth of service and HR features may be unnecessary overhead for teams seeking only an asset register.

Alternatives

ManageEngine ServiceDesk Plus is worth considering when a published monthly price is more important: its Standard plan is 13.00 USD per month billed monthly for IT help desk, while Professional is 27.00 USD per month billed monthly for IT help desk and asset management. Its freemium model and broader platform support may also suit buyers wanting a free entry point.

Automation Anywhere Document Automation is a different choice for eligible small businesses prioritizing document automation: its free Community Edition includes Document Automation for up to 5 machines and 100 pages/month.

Verdict

Choose Hornbill IT Asset Management if your organization needs asset discovery and lifecycle control connected to service workflows, license oversight, and employee services across departments. Its main advantage is that breadth within a cloud service; its main reason to look elsewhere is custom pricing, compounded by a free plan and support scope that need clarification for a firm deployment decision.
