Overview

Skillz is a competition platform for mobile games, connecting players in matches and tournaments while giving game developers tools to add competitive play. It is best for players seeking organized contests within games and developers building games around social competition. Its format range is useful, but cash play is restricted by age and location, and browser games do not get the full feature set.

Founded in 2012 and based in San Francisco, Skillz sits at the intersection of Game Tournament Software and Game Leaderboard Software, with a particular focus on competition built into games.

Key features

Competition formats and player matching

Players can enter head-to-head matches, tournaments and brackets, or track results on leaderboards. That variety gives developers several ways to structure competition rather than limiting play to direct matches. Skillz says its proprietary technology matches players at similar skill levels and designs contests to offer a fair opportunity to win. That is a meaningful part of the platform's appeal, but it is not a promise of a particular outcome.

Developer integrations

The SDK supports Unity, native iOS and Android, including direct integrations with Apple and Google APIs. Developers can also build Unity games for browsers and host them on Skillz. SIDEkick allows supported integration workflows to be tested inside the Unity editor without connecting to Skillz servers, which is useful during development before server-connected integration work.

Web feature trade-offs

Browser play comes with limitations: brackets, real-time tournaments, chat, progressive leagues and some payment methods are among the features unavailable on web. Developers whose games depend on those features should plan around mobile integration rather than assume browser delivery is equivalent.

Pricing

Skillz uses a freemium model, with no free trial. The Skillz player platform costs 0.00 USD per free: joining and free tournaments cost nothing, while cash tournaments have entry fees ranging from $0.60. That makes it possible to participate without paying, but cash contests are not free and are not suitable for every player or region.

Cash competitions are for players aged 18 or older in regions where cash gameplay is enabled. Developers considering Skillz should account for the platform’s mobile and web feature differences when deciding whether its competition model fits their game.

Platforms

Skillz supports Android, iOS and web. Developer requirements currently include Unity 2021.3 or 2022.3 LTS, iOS 14 or later, and Android API level 24 or later. Those minimums give teams concrete compatibility targets, but games built on other Unity versions or older operating systems may need changes before integration.

Developers can contact integration support through Skillz’s contact form; they are advised to include their Game ID and SDK and tool versions. Users are responsible for protecting their passwords and mobile devices, and should report suspected unauthorized access to support.

Who it's for

Skillz suits players who want structured competition within mobile games, including free tournaments and eligible cash contests. For independent developers, it is a fit when head-to-head play, tournaments, brackets or leaderboards are central to the game and the supported SDK environments match the project. It is less compelling for teams that need browser games to include the full mobile feature set.

Pros and cons

Pros: Multiple competition formats let developers support more than one style of play.
Pros: Unity editor testing through SIDEkick does not require a connection to Skillz servers.
Pros: Free tournaments provide a no-cost option for players who do not want to enter cash contests.
Cons: Cash play is limited to adults in enabled regions, narrowing its reach.
Cons: Web games miss several features, including brackets and real-time tournaments.
Cons: Developers must meet specific Unity, iOS and Android minimum requirements.

Alternatives

Challonge is a better fit for organizers who need tournament and community management beyond mobile-game integration: its free plan allows unlimited tournaments, events and communities, with up to 256 participants per tournament, but charges $0.75/order for paid registrations and is ad-supported.

Tourney Bot suits smaller event organizers who can work within a free allowance of three tournaments per month and eight participants; its free plan supports several formats, including Swiss and round robin.

Xtallet is worth considering for web-based tournament management when one active event at a time and a 100-team cap are enough; its free plan includes leaderboards and match results, with an Xtallet watermark on exports.

LeagueCircuit is an option for readers seeking free, open-source league software that can be self-hosted or used on the web.

Bracket is another free, open-source tournament management option, with API, Linux, self-hosted and web platforms.

Challengermode is an alternative for readers who want a free platform available on Android, iOS, API and web, with tailored developer pricing.

PlayVS is aimed at school competition: its Middle School Competition early-bird plan costs 395.00 USD per year for full-year platform-wide access if paid by September 4, 2026, with unlimited titles, teams and players.

School Esports is another school-oriented option, with a 499.00 USD one-time league-platform setup followed by free access for life and a 15% share on entry fees.

Verdict

Skillz is the stronger choice for mobile-game players and developers who want competition integrated into games, particularly when multiple formats and skill-based matching matter. Choose it for free tournaments or to build around its supported mobile SDKs; look elsewhere if cash eligibility is a barrier or browser games need the full competition feature set.
