Overview

HeyGen is an AI video platform for turning text, images, audio, and presentation files into videos, including avatar-led content. It suits creators and teams who need several ways to build and localize video in one workflow. Its breadth and editable output are compelling, but the free allowance is too small for sustained production.

AI Studio lets users adjust generated motion elements, including text, color, timing, and layout. Many videos are generated within a minute, while complex ones may take a few minutes. HeyGen supports cloud and mobile deployment, with Android, iOS, web, and API access.

Key features

Generation covers text-to-video, image-to-video, audio-to-video, avatars, and PPT or PDF files. That flexibility is useful for teams starting with different source materials, while avatar tools are a natural fit for explainers, training, and presenter-led updates. Lip-sync and translation support more than 175 languages and dialects, making localized versions a central strength.

Collaboration includes comments, tagging, multi-user editing, shared workspaces, and task management. These tools make HeyGen more suitable for ongoing team production than a one-off generator. Business and Enterprise add centralized billing, role management, SSO, and SCIM provisioning; Business also integrates with n8n, Make, HubSpot, Zapier, and LMS platforms.

Custom avatars require identity verification from the person depicted. Paid plans include live chat support, while Enterprise adds priority support and customer success management. HeyGen lists GDPR, SOC 2 Type II, CCPA, AI Act, and DPF compliance markers, and describes annual penetration testing, vulnerability management, and continuous monitoring.

Pricing

The free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and allows three videos per month, each up to one minute. It includes 500+ stock video avatars and one custom video avatar. Users can try the service without a credit card, with limited access to premium features, but the monthly video cap makes this a sampler rather than a dependable production tier.

Creator costs 29.00 USD per month, billed monthly, and includes 600 credits per month, videos up to 30 minutes, 1080p export, and support for 175+ languages and dialects. Creator Annual costs 24.00 USD per month, billed annually, with 600 credits per month. The annual option lowers the monthly price but commits the buyer to annual billing.

Pro costs 49.00 USD per month, billed monthly, for 1,000 credits, videos up to 30 minutes, and 4K export. It fits creators who need higher resolution or more monthly credits than Creator provides. Business costs 149.00 USD per month and includes 1,500 credits, videos up to 60 minutes, and 4K export; additional seats cost $20 per seat per month. Its longer limit and team administration and integrations make it the more relevant tier for collaborative production, though seat costs can add up.

Enterprise uses custom pricing, removes the maximum video duration, and includes 4K export, SCIM provisioning, and priority support. It is aimed at organizations needing enterprise administration and support rather than a fixed self-serve tier. Cancellation stops renewal, but paid features and credits remain available until the current billing cycle ends.

Platforms

HeyGen is available on Android, iOS, and web, with API access for connected workflows. Its integrations include Vimeo, Salesforce, Slack, Google Drive, Notion, and Vercel, alongside the Business integrations noted above.

Who it's for

HeyGen is a strong fit for solo creators, small businesses, and larger teams producing avatar-led videos, localized content, or clips assembled from documents and other source material. The language coverage and editable output help when a video needs adaptation after generation. It is less suited to people who only need occasional short clips and want a generous free allowance, or who do not need avatars, localization, or team workflows.

Pros and cons

Pro: Multiple input types and more than 175 supported languages and dialects suit varied video and localization workflows.
Pro: AI Studio keeps generated motion elements editable, so users can refine layout and presentation rather than accept a fixed render.
Pro: Collaboration, integrations, and enterprise controls support production across teams and organizations.
Con: The free plan caps users at three one-minute videos a month, limiting its usefulness for regular publishing.
Con: Creator exports at 1080p, so 4K output requires Pro or a higher tier.
Con: Business charges $20 per additional seat per month, adding a recurring cost for larger teams.

Alternatives

For a broader set of options, browse AI video generators. If localization is the priority, compare Video Localization Software and AI Dubbing Software; for presenter-led explainers, see AI Explainer Video Makers. People focused on animating still images can explore AI Photo Animation Tools, while avatar-centered workflows can start with AI Avatar Video Software.

Synthesia is another freemium avatar-video option, with a free Basic plan offering 1,200 credits per month, up to 10 minutes of video monthly, and 25 AI-generated video assets. Pika, Google Veo, InVideo AI, Higgsfield, FlexClip, Runway, and TikTok Symphony Creative Studio are other alternatives to compare.

Verdict

Choose HeyGen if you need a flexible, team-capable video workflow with avatars, localization, and output that remains editable after generation. Its free plan is useful for trying the tools, but the three-video cap makes a paid tier the practical choice for recurring work. Look elsewhere if you need only occasional clips or do not expect to use its avatar, localization, or collaboration strengths.
