Overview

Hapag-Lloyd Live Position is a container-tracking service for customers shipping with Hapag-Lloyd. It is best suited to teams that need device-based visibility across ocean and inland legs; its value depends on eligible equipment and haulage arrangements.

It combines location updates with changing arrival estimates, but does not provide exception alerts. The purchase terms also make it important to confirm eligibility and cost before adding the service.

Key features

The tracking view brings together container status and location, ETA, inland distance traveled, and planned and updated shipment information. A GPS tracker transmits location every 15 minutes, while detected ETA changes update automatically on the website and API. This gives teams a regular progress signal, rather than continuous positioning.

Live ETA revises import arrival estimates using device data and past differences between transport plans and actual performance. It is included for eligible Carrier Haulage import bookings. Vessel history is shown on a map, with vessel data updated every 24 hours. CSV downloads make tracking data usable offline, and the API can feed it into a customer’s own systems.

Coverage is restricted to dry containers fitted with a smart device. A shipment must be purchased as a whole even when some containers lack devices, which can make the service a poor fit for mixed-equipment shipments. There are no exception alerts, so teams that need automatic disruption notifications should consider another tool. Hapag-Lloyd does not guarantee uninterrupted or error-free operation, and full data ownership remains with the carrier.

Pricing

Live Position (Carrier Haulage): free. It is added automatically when any leg is Carrier Haulage (door move), making it the straightforward option for eligible bookings without an added tracking charge.

Live Position (Merchant Haulage): 15.00 USD per once, billed per container. It applies to Merchant Haulage moves on export and import and/or a Hapag-Lloyd inland ramp move. This suits customers who need tracking on those legs, but per-container charges can add up across a shipment. The purchase can be added after booking creation until the sea freight invoice is issued or submitted; it cannot be cancelled after purchase.

There is no free plan or trial. Self-onboarding for the API is free; comprehensive IT onboarding costs USD 5,000. Contact Hapag-Lloyd Customer Service for technical issues. The terms allow a fee refund or cancellation if a container is unequipped or position data has a gap longer than 48 hours.

Platforms

The service is offered on web, Android, iOS, and through an API. Web access is through the Online Business Suite and requires a signed-in customer account. The API is useful for organizations that want tracking data in their own systems, though comprehensive IT onboarding carries a substantial one-time cost.

Who it's for

Live Position is for Hapag-Lloyd customers who want shipment and container visibility across sea, rail, and truck. It is a stronger fit when containers are equipped and the shipment’s haulage type matches the relevant pricing plan. Businesses needing alerts for exceptions, or tracking for unequipped containers, should look elsewhere.

Pros and cons

Multimodal visibility: follows eligible containers across ship, rail, and truck rather than limiting the view to ocean movement.
Regular location and ETA updates: 15-minute GPS transmissions and automatically refreshed ETA changes help teams follow progress.
Useful data options: CSV export supports offline work, while the API can integrate tracking into customer systems.
Equipment and purchase constraints: only equipped dry containers qualify, the whole shipment must be purchased, and purchases generally cannot be cancelled.
No exception alerts: teams must use another way to monitor disruptions.
Service and data caveats: uninterrupted, error-free operation is not guaranteed, and data ownership remains with the carrier.

Alternatives

Container Tracking Software is a broader category to compare if Hapag-Lloyd’s eligibility or haulage terms do not fit.

Mati Logistics suits users wanting a free starting tier: it covers 10 shipments with an account or three lookups without one, but its free plan has no API.
Panvaya Ocean Container Tracking is an ocean-focused option with a free tier for five shipments, 10 developer API credits, AIS vessel tracking, congestion monitoring, and route planning.
Terminal49 is worth considering for a small team seeking a free tier, with up to 10 active containers, three users, basic notifications, shipment details, and 50 document credits.
Tracktainer offers three free tracking credits forever; its monthly plan costs 1.00 USD per month, with a 10-credit minimum and one credit per shipment.
project44 Ocean Visibility is a paid ocean-visibility alternative with a movement interface or API and more than 150 ocean carrier and forwarder connections.
SeaRates Container Tracking is an alternative with Android, iOS, web, and API access; its API pricing is usage-based per container, with volume discounts for annual billing.
GoComet is another paid option to compare.
Traxens offers smart-container tracking through a carrier or freight forwarder, with coverage and data varying by device.

Verdict

Choose Hapag-Lloyd Live Position if you ship with Hapag-Lloyd and need regular, multimodal visibility for equipped dry containers, especially when Carrier Haulage makes tracking free. Look elsewhere if you need exception alerts, broader equipment coverage, or the ability to cancel after purchase.
