Overview

Gupshup brings conversational agents, campaign journeys, and human escalation together. Agents can use live conversation context to book appointments, cancel tickets, or make EMI payments. Teams can set engagement rules, connect business tools, apply guardrails, and establish a trusted source of truth. This is a stronger fit for action-oriented service and commerce workflows than for teams seeking only a basic FAQ bot.

Campaign tools support triggers and drip journeys, with metrics for measuring their performance. The channel mix spans WhatsApp, Instagram, SMS, web and app, RCS, and voice. Gupshup says it supports more than 50,000 businesses in 130+ countries and powers 120 billion conversations annually, a scale claim relevant to large programs but not a substitute for assessing workflow and cost fit.

Key features

Agent creation and oversight: A visual flow builder, AI bot generation, knowledge-base answers, lead qualification, and conversation routing cover both structured flows and more contextual interactions. Rules, tools, guardrails, and a trusted source of truth give teams controls over agent behavior; human escalation gives difficult cases a route to support staff.
Campaign journeys: Trigger campaigns and drip journeys, paired with performance metrics, support ongoing customer engagement rather than one-off message blasts.
Integrations: Gupshup lists Salesforce Marketing Cloud, MoEngage, CleverTap, Oracle Responsys, WebEngage, Bloomreach, and Braze, plus over 500 plug-and-play integrations across support, payments, CRM, and commerce. It also describes custom integrations with any platform, which may help teams connect existing operations.
Security and compliance: Its security page displays ISOQAR, AICPA, RBI, GDPR, CCPA, and LGPD marks and describes a periodically reviewed security compliance program.

Pricing

Gupshup's self-serve WhatsApp pricing is shown at $0.00 per contact, but this is not a zero-cost messaging option: Gupshup charges $0.001 per message and WhatsApp fees are billed at actuals. Template messages and session messages each carry a $0.001 Gupshup fee; media over 64KB is free of that fee. WhatsApp fees vary by message type and country, so actual spend depends on both usage and destination.

The separate Gupshup messaging fee plan is 0.00 USD per month and applies to all messages, with the standard 0.001 USD per message Gupshup charge and WhatsApp fees billed at actuals. Enterprise pricing is custom pricing and requires contacting Gupshup. The self-serve structure suits teams that want to start without a monthly platform charge, but high-volume senders should account for the per-message fee and variable WhatsApp charges before committing.

Platforms

Gupshup supports API and web access, with multichannel deployment and omnichannel support. That combination is relevant to teams building messaging into their own systems as well as those managing web-based campaigns.

Who it's for

Gupshup is aimed at marketing, performance marketing, commerce and growth, and customer support and CX teams. It is most compelling where a company needs campaign journeys, conversational actions, channel breadth, and a human fallback in the same operation. A team with a narrow WhatsApp use case and little need for agent controls or multichannel campaigns may find the layered per-message costs harder to justify.

Pros and cons

Pro: Agents can act on conversational context, while engagement rules, guardrails, tools, and a trusted source of truth help shape their behavior.
Pro: Campaign journeys, performance metrics, multiple channels, integrations, and human escalation cover a wide range of customer engagement needs.
Con: WhatsApp self-serve use carries a $0.001 Gupshup charge per message in addition to WhatsApp fees billed at actuals, making total cost sensitive to volume and message mix.
Con: Enterprise pricing requires contacting Gupshup, so organizations evaluating a larger deployment do not have a fixed public price to compare.

Alternatives

For a WhatsApp-focused comparison, browse WhatsApp Business API Providers. Teams focused on rich-channel messaging can compare RCS Business Messaging Software and RCS Messaging Platforms; teams prioritizing customer support automation can review Customer Service Automation Software. For campaign-oriented messaging, see Messenger Marketing Software or Transactional SMS Software.

SimplyRCS is worth considering when RCS is the priority and a freemium entry point is preferable: its Pay-as-you-go plan has a $0 platform charge with messaging at published rates, and its Starter plan is 20.00 USD per month with about 400 AI conversations per month. Telesign Communications Platform is another API-and-web option, with a free plan and free trial; its paid pricing is custom pricing through sales.

BuzZync RCS Messaging offers pay-as-you-go pricing where total cost varies with monthly messaging volume. LINK Mobility RCS varies pricing by message type, with RCS Basic limited to 160 characters and RCS Conversation using a 24-hour session. Concepto Móvil RCS API, Dotgo RCS, and Greenbureau RCS are paid RCS alternatives. Helo.ai offers a free trial and a custom enterprise plan.

Verdict

Choose Gupshup if your team needs conversational agents that can take actions, campaign journeys across channels, and human escalation in one platform. Its breadth and agent controls are the main reasons to shortlist it. Look elsewhere if predictable WhatsApp spend is the priority: the Gupshup per-message charge and additional WhatsApp fees make cost depend on message volume, type, and country.
