Overview

GroupManager organizes permissions into groups, assigns players to them, and supports inheritance alongside promotion and demotion hierarchies. That structure is useful when a server needs different authority levels without maintaining every player’s permissions individually. Administrators can manage users and groups in files, through console commands, or with in-game commands.

Permission rules include wildcard, negative, and exception nodes, and assignments can expire after a set duration. This is a capable toolkit for rank management, but operators need to plan their hierarchy and rule exceptions carefully. GroupManager exposes a build-status variable for other plug-ins; it does not itself prevent or respond to griefing.

Key features

Ranks and integrations

Groups and users can carry variables such as prefixes, suffixes, and build status. Chat plug-ins can read prefixes and suffixes, while other plug-ins may use build status. PlaceholderAPI support exposes group, subgroup, prefix, suffix, and permission-check values, making those details accessible to compatible integrations.

Storage and setup

Storage options include YAML, H2, MySQL, SQLite, PostgreSQL, and MariaDB. That breadth gives server operators a choice between file-based storage and several database backends. Installation involves putting GroupManager.jar in the server’s plugins folder, starting and stopping the server, then editing config.yml. Developers can declare GroupManager as a provided Maven dependency through JitPack.

The v3.2 release is labeled for Minecraft 1.8 to 1.20+. The project directs support requests to GitHub issues and a GroupManager Discord. Its repository uses the GNU General Public License version 3.

Pricing

GroupManager is free: the GroupManager plan costs 0.00 USD per free and is GPL-3.0 licensed. There is no paid plan listed, so there is no paid tier to consider for additional capacity or features.

Platforms

GroupManager is self-hosted and supports Bukkit and Spigot servers. It is a fit for operators managing their own Minecraft server, not a hosted permissions service.

Who it's for

Choose GroupManager if you run a Bukkit or Spigot server and need ranked permissions, inheritance, timed assignments, and multiple management routes. Its variables and PlaceholderAPI support are useful when chat or other plug-ins need to display or consume group information. Look elsewhere if you need antigrief functionality built into the permissions tool.

Pros and cons

Flexible rank control: Inheritance, promotion and demotion paths, and exception rules support differentiated authority without requiring every permission to be assigned separately.
Several administration routes: Configuration files, console commands, and in-game commands give operators different ways to manage groups and users.
Broad storage choice: YAML and five database options accommodate varied server setups.
No built-in antigrief: Build status is only a value other plug-ins may use, so protection requires separate software.
Default inactive-user purge: User data is purged at server start after 90 days without login by default; accounts can be protected by setting lastplayed to 0.

Alternatives

LuckPerms is another free option; consider it if its API, Linux, self-hosted, or web platform coverage better suits your setup.
BungeePerms is free and is described for BungeeCord or Velocity and Spigot or PaperSpigot, so it is a better match when those server types are central to your choice.
Multipass is a free self-hosted permissions plug-in for Nukkit, making it the relevant pick for a Nukkit server.
Nimbus AntiCheat is a free self-hosted alternative for Paper 1.21.8, requiring Java 21 and PacketEvents and serving Java-edition players; choose it when those compatibility conditions and its anticheat category fit your need instead.
ReducedX-Anti Cheat is a free self-hosted option to consider when seeking an alternative in that category.
ServerRoles is a free option with API and self-hosted platform support.
ThunderPerms is another free self-hosted option.
PermissionManager is another free option.

For a broader permissions shortlist, see Minecraft Permissions Plugins. The Taskbar Customization Software list is another directory category.

Verdict

GroupManager is a sensible choice for self-hosted Bukkit and Spigot owners who want free, configurable ranks with inheritance, temporary permissions, and flexible storage. Its clearest reason to choose it is the combination of detailed permission rules and several management routes. Choose another tool or add separate plug-ins if your requirement includes antigrief protection, and review the default 90-day inactive-user purge before deployment.
