Overview

Gravitee API Gateway is a runtime for enforcing security, traffic, and transformation policies on API traffic. It is best suited to teams that need consistent controls across varied protocols and deployment environments. Its broad policy and mediation capabilities are balanced by paid-plan limits on production gateway count.

Key features

Policy Studio uses drag-and-drop configuration for identity checks, specification validation, rate limiting, caching, threat protection, and message transformation. Shared policy groups extend reusable enforcement across thousands of APIs and plans, a meaningful advantage for organizations managing a large API estate; teams with only a few APIs may have less need for that scale.

Protocol support spans REST, GraphQL, gRPC, SOAP, WebSocket, Server-sent Events, and Webhooks. The gateway can mediate between protocols and formats, including gRPC to Kafka, JSON to Protobuf, and REST to Kafka. Broker integrations include Kafka, Confluent, Solace, HiveMQ, and MQTT. That combination suits teams connecting APIs with event systems rather than treating each protocol as a separate gateway concern.

Authentication options include OAuth 2.0, JWT, mTLS, API Key, OIDC, SAML, keyless, and basic authentication. Traffic controls include OpenAPI validation, threat protection, IP filtering, CORS, caching, retries, circuit breakers, and per-consumer rate limiting. These give teams several ways to shape access and traffic, though the right configuration will depend on their policies and identity setup.

Deployment can be self-managed, on AWS, Azure, GCP, on-premises, or on Kubernetes via the Gateway API. OpenTelemetry exports runtime telemetry to tools such as Datadog, Grafana, and Splunk; Alert Engine can send email, Slack, or webhook alerts. The gateway also supports an API catalog, developer portal, lifecycle management, API product management, access policies, and analytics.

Pricing

The Community Edition is free under the Apache 2.0 license. It gives teams a no-cost way to use the community edition, but has no numerical limits published in its plan description.

Planet costs $2,500/m and includes unlimited users, unlimited APIs, one production gateway, and Gold Support. Its flat pricing, with unlimited API calls and users and no per-call fees, suits teams that can operate within one production gateway and want a predictable monthly price. Teams needing more production gateways must look at another tier.

Galaxy has custom pricing and includes unlimited users and APIs, two production gateways, enterprise plugins, limited event broker support, hybrid or managed deployment, and Gold Support. It is the step up for teams needing a second production gateway or enterprise plugins, but its limited broker support may not fit broker-heavy deployments.

Universe also uses custom pricing. It includes unlimited users and APIs, four or more production gateways, unlimited enterprise functionality, all supported event brokers, IAM, and 24/7 support with a Technical Account Manager. This tier is aimed at larger organizations that need broader broker coverage, more gateways, and higher-touch support.

A 14-day trial is offered. The published paid plans all retain unlimited users and APIs, while production gateway count and support level are key distinctions.

Platforms

Gravitee supports API, Linux, self-hosted, web, and Windows environments. Its hybrid deployment options let teams combine managed cloud services with self-managed or on-premises operation.

Who it's for

Gravitee is a strong fit for enterprises and platform teams standardizing runtime policies across APIs, especially where protocol mediation, event brokers, or multiple deployment targets matter. It is less compelling for smaller teams that need only a simple gateway or cannot justify a paid tier's production gateway limits.

Pros and cons

Pro: Broad protocol and broker coverage, including mediation between API formats and Kafka, reduces the need to treat event traffic as a separate integration problem.
Pro: Reusable policy groups and extensive identity and traffic controls help maintain consistent enforcement across a large API portfolio.
Pro: Flat pricing with unlimited calls and users avoids per-call charges on paid plans.
Con: Planet costs $2,500/m and includes only one production gateway, so the entry paid tier may not suit teams needing multiple production instances.
Con: Galaxy has limited event broker support, while broader broker coverage is reserved for custom-priced Universe.
Con: Custom pricing for Galaxy and Universe makes it harder to compare their cost against a fixed-budget alternative.

Alternatives

For an open-source gateway with a free plan and a paid model, consider Kong Gateway. If a self-hosted community edition with unlimited requests and APIs is the priority, KrakenD API Gateway is another option. Teams looking for a freemium gateway with an open-source tier and usage-based Core plan can consider Tyk Gateway.

For a free, open-source Kubernetes API gateway, Emissary-ingress is an alternative; Envoy Gateway is another free open-source project. Teams focused on a metered cloud API service can consider Google Cloud Endpoints, whose free tier covers 1,999,999 API calls and standard usage starts at $3.00 per month. For a free Java/Spring application dependency rather than a gateway product, consider Spring Integration. Apache APISIX is also a free option.

Verdict

Choose Gravitee when your organization needs a wide protocol range, reusable policies, and deployment flexibility under one gateway platform. Its strongest case is consistent control across complex API and event environments; look elsewhere if your needs are modest, your budget cannot absorb Planet's $2,500/m entry price, or your production gateway requirements exceed a tier's included count.
