Overview

GMvault is a command-line utility for backing up Gmail and restoring a saved email repository to Gmail. It suits people who want a free, open-source Gmail backup tool and are comfortable working in a terminal. Its focused sync and recovery options are useful, but its Gmail-only scope and 2016 latest release make it a poor fit for readers seeking a recently updated, multi-provider service.

Key features

Full and incremental sync: Run a full synchronization or use incremental quick synchronization for subsequent backup work. That flexibility supports both an initial archive and quicker follow-up syncs.
Restore with recovery controls: GMvault can put a local email repository back into Gmail. The --resume and --restart options help avoid re-uploading messages already processed, useful when a restore is interrupted.
Authentication and token storage: XOAuth is the default and recommended method; after initial authentication, its token is stored in $HOME/.gmvault for later use. Users can also authenticate with a Gmail login password, encrypted if they choose to save it.
Local archive: Email is stored by default in $HOME/gmvault-db, or %HOME%/gmvault-db on Windows. This gives the backup a local destination, though users must be comfortable managing files in those locations.
Installation choices: Binary installations are documented for Windows, Linux and Mac OS X. Source installation is also possible with python setup.py install, pip or easy_install, making it suitable for users prepared to handle a command-line setup.

Pricing

GMvault costs 0.00 USD per free. The free plan is the open-source GNU Affero General Public License v3 release, with the core Gmail backup and restore capabilities. There are no paid tiers or plan-based quotas described; the trade-off is that users rely on a command-line tool rather than a priced, broader backup offering.

Platforms

GMvault supports Linux, macOS and Windows. The project documents binary installations for Linux, Mac OS X and Windows, and Windows uses a distinct default archive path. Choose it only if Gmail is the provider you need: Gmail is its supported provider, not a multi-service mail backup option.

Who it's for

GMvault is best for technically comfortable Gmail users who want a no-cost local archive, incremental synchronization and a way to restore mail into Gmail. Its command-line interface and local file paths are sensible for users who prefer direct control over where the archive lives. It is not the right choice for someone who wants a graphical workflow, coverage across email providers, or a project with a recent release history: version 1.9.1 was published March 31, 2016.

Pros and cons

Pro — Backup and restore in one tool: It can save Gmail mail locally and restore that repository to Gmail.
Pro — Resumable restore: Resume and restart options reduce duplicate upload work after processing has begun.
Pro — Free and open source: The GNU-AGPL-3.0 license and free plan make it a no-cost option for Gmail backup.
Con — Terminal required: Its command-line interface will rule it out for users who want a graphical backup app.
Con — Gmail only: It does not serve readers looking to back up mail from other providers.
Con — Old latest release: The latest release is version 1.9.1 from March 31, 2016, a drawback for users prioritizing a recently updated tool.

AvePoint Cloud Backup has custom pricing; contact the maker for a quote.
DRS Softech Microsoft 365 Backup Tool is a paid Microsoft 365 backup option with Home and Administrator licenses; choose it when Microsoft 365, rather than Gmail, is the target.

Verdict

Choose GMvault if you want a free, open-source way to back up Gmail locally and restore it, and you are comfortable using the command line. Its sync choices and resumable restore are practical strengths. Look elsewhere if you need another mail provider, a graphical interface, or a more recently released tool.
