Overview

Built to address the coordination problems its creators encountered in their own families, OurGroceries has been around since 2009. Household members signed in to the same account see list changes instantly, which is useful when more than one person updates a shopping plan. The shared-account model is simple, but it does not suit people who need grocery lists kept private from other household members.

Key features

Lists organized for a shopping trip

List entries can include quantities, notes, photos, categories, and barcodes. Grouping items by category or aisle gives a list more structure than a plain checklist, while manual reordering lets shoppers arrange it around their route through a particular store. Barcode scanning is supported, but product coverage is U.S.-centric, a meaningful limitation for shoppers elsewhere.

Recipes, voice, and delivery

Recipes can be saved in the app, then added to a list either ingredient by ingredient or as a complete recipe. That connection makes meal planning useful at the point of shopping without requiring a separate recipe list. Users can also add items through Amazon Alexa, Siri, and Google Assistant on Android. An experimental MCP integration is described for Claude and ChatGPT, but its experimental status makes it a less dependable foundation for a regular workflow.

Sending a shopping list to Instacart connects planning with delivery, but only for users in the United States and Canada. That regional restriction limits its usefulness for the app’s broader international audience.

Exports, privacy, and support

Users can export lists, recipes, the item master list, and categories in a ZIP containing XLSX and JSON files. This is useful for keeping a copy or examining data elsewhere, but exports cannot be re-imported after external changes, so it is not a practical round-trip editing workflow. The privacy policy says servers and stored user information are in the United States. The company says it does not sell or share personal information, while also describing information shared with advertising partners for personalized ads. Its stated security measures include log review, off-site backups, encryption, and security software, alongside the caveat that security cannot be guaranteed. The creators say they personally read app-store reviews and respond to every email, and provide support@ourgroceries.com.

Price tracking and private lists are described as requested features planned for a future update, rather than current capabilities.

Pricing

The free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and includes all features and list sharing, with ads appearing on a few screens. That is an unusually complete starting point for households that can tolerate advertising; no feature cut or list cap is attached to the free tier.

Remove Ads monthly subscription: 1.00 USD per month, billed monthly, with a 7-day free trial. It removes ads for the account’s shared lists, making it the low-commitment option for households that want to try an ad-free experience.
Remove Ads yearly subscription: 6.00 USD per year, billed yearly, with a 7-day free trial. It serves people who expect to keep using the app and want to pay less often.
Lifetime upgrade: 20.00 USD per once, billed as a one-time upgrade. It removes ads for the account’s shared lists without a recurring subscription.

All three paid options remove ads rather than unlocking additional features, so paying makes sense chiefly when the ads matter. The paid descriptions specify ad removal for shared lists, not a broader household feature bundle.

Platforms

OurGroceries is available on Android, iOS, macOS, and the web, giving households a choice of mobile and desktop access.

Who it's for

Choose it if several people need to keep one grocery list current, especially if recipes and aisle-based organization belong in the same workflow. It is also a strong fit for budget-conscious households because sharing and every feature are included in the free plan. Look elsewhere if you need private lists, dependable barcode coverage outside the U.S., price tracking now, or an export that can be edited externally and brought back into the app.

Pros and cons

Pros

Sharing and all features are free: households can coordinate without paying to unlock core capabilities.
Recipes feed shopping lists: users can add selected ingredients or a whole recipe rather than rebuilding the list by hand.
Flexible store organization: aisle and category grouping plus manual ordering can reflect how a shopper moves through a store.
Multiple ad-removal choices: users can pay monthly, yearly, or once, depending on whether they prefer flexibility or no recurring charge.

Cons

Ads remain on the free plan: they appear in a few screens, and paid plans remove ads rather than add features.
No private lists or current price tracking: those capabilities are planned, not part of the present feature set.
Barcode coverage is U.S.-centric: scanning may be less useful outside that market.
Exports are one-way after external edits: changed files cannot be re-imported.
Instacart integration is regional: list handoff is available only in the United States and Canada.

AnyList is worth considering if core list creation and sharing with up to five imported web recipes on its free plan are sufficient.
BuyBye is an option for someone whose needs fit its free limits of five lists, two people per list, a five-recipe box, and current-week meal planning.
Listonic may appeal to shoppers who want unlimited lists on the free plan.
mitlist is a fit for households seeking a self-hosted option and whose needs fall within its free plan’s four-member, 1 GB attachment, and 100-active-list limits.

Grocery Buddy is a free alternative with all features included, for readers on Android or iOS.

Verdict

OurGroceries is an easy recommendation for households that want shared lists, recipes, and store-aware organization without paying for core features. Its free plan makes the value clear, but shoppers who need private lists, broader barcode coverage, or a more flexible export workflow should choose another app.
