Overview

MooseFS is on-premises distributed storage software that brings multiple servers together behind one storage resource. It suits teams that need filesystem or block access to shared capacity and can operate a cluster; its strongest case is scale-out storage with replication, while commercial deployments should weigh Pro’s terms and support against Community’s tighter limits.

Applications can mount it as a POSIX filesystem, use it as a block device, or connect through the C API. MooseFS also supports Kubernetes, making it relevant to deployments built around that platform.

MooseFS is developed and maintained by Saglabs SA, headquartered in Warsaw, Poland, and dates to 2005. It belongs in Distributed File System Software and Software-Defined Storage Software.

Key features

Replication and recovery: Data chunks are replicated across different chunkservers, and missing copies are recreated automatically after disk or node loss. That reduces the need to restore each loss manually, though Community’s single-parity erasure coding is a plan constraint to consider.
Parallel I/O with scale-out: Reads and writes run against multiple chunkservers in parallel. Adding servers brings both capacity and bandwidth, a useful fit when storage demand and throughput need to grow together.
Multiple access paths: POSIX mounting, block-device use, and the C API let applications use the same system in different ways. That flexibility is valuable when a deployment has varied workloads rather than one access pattern.
Pro availability and location controls: Synchronized master servers allow a follower to take over if the leader fails. Pro can also span locations and apply per-location policies to keep data near its users; those capabilities matter most for organizations operating across sites.
Cluster-wide authentication: MooseFS 5 gates data access through the master, preventing storage-layer access from bypassing export permissions. This is a meaningful control for clusters where export permissions must remain authoritative.

Pricing

MooseFS uses a freemium model. Community costs 0.00 USD per free, forever, and is GPLv2 open source. It permits one active master and single-parity erasure coding, and Community support relies on community discussion and documentation. It is a sensible starting point for development, evaluation, or smaller deployments, but the master and parity limits make it less suited to teams needing Pro failover.

Personal costs 9.00 EUR per once, with billing of 9 € per TiB beyond 20 TiB used raw space. It is free up to 20 TiB of used raw space, allows non-commercial use, and includes the full Pro feature set. That makes it a fit for individual developers, researchers, and home labs seeking advanced features without a commercial deployment. The non-commercial restriction is decisive: businesses should not treat the free allowance as a commercial tier.

Enterprise has custom pricing tailored to the deployment. It permits commercial use and includes 24/7 developer support and dedicated releases, making it the relevant plan for production organizations that need commercial terms and direct support. Quote enquiries usually receive a written email reply within one or two working days.

Platforms

MooseFS is self-hosted and supports Linux, macOS, Windows, web, and API platforms. Official binary packages are offered for Linux distributions, FreeBSD, Raspberry Pi OS, and macOS; macOS packages require macFUSE and target macOS 12 or later. The native Windows client is included with Pro, so Windows access is not a Community-plan capability.

Who it's for

Choose MooseFS when you need one storage resource backed by multiple servers, want parallel I/O and automatic replication recovery, and can manage an on-premises cluster. Community is aimed at development, evaluation, and smaller deployments; Personal suits non-commercial individual, research, and home-lab use within its raw-space allowance. Enterprises needing commercial rights, dedicated releases, or 24/7 developer support should consider Enterprise.

Look elsewhere if you need commercial use without custom pricing, cannot accept a self-hosted system, or require Windows client access without Pro. Community’s single active master also makes it the wrong tier for buyers who need automatic master failover.

Pros and cons

Pros

Storage and bandwidth scale together: Adding chunkservers increases capacity and parallel I/O bandwidth.
Automatic replica rebuilding: Missing copies are recreated after disk or node loss.
Flexible interfaces: POSIX, block-device, and C API access accommodate different application needs.
Pro adds meaningful operational controls: Automatic master takeover, multi-location policies, and 24/7 support address availability and cross-site needs.

Cons

Community has a single active master: Buyers needing automatic failover must move to a Pro-feature plan.
Personal is non-commercial: Its 20 TiB raw-space free allowance does not make it an option for business use.
Windows client requires Pro: Teams on Windows cannot rely on the native client under Community.
Enterprise requires a quote: Commercial buyers must obtain tailored pricing rather than select a published fixed price.

Alternatives

SeaweedFS is worth comparing for readers who want a free Community support tier that allows any cluster size; its support is through GitHub issues, discussions, and public documentation, with no guaranteed response time.

Ceph is a free alternative for readers considering open-source distributed storage, particularly if they can work with its requirement for a running Ceph cluster for block storage.

Hadoop Distributed File System may suit readers who specifically want Apache-licensed, self-hosted cluster software at no charge.

JuiceFS offers a free self-hosted Community Edition with support through GitHub and Discord, an alternative for readers who prefer those community channels.

OpenAFS is another free, open-source distributed filesystem.

Quobyte is a freemium option whose Free Edition supports up to 150 TB of storage, which may suit readers whose needs fit within that ceiling.

XtreemFS is a free distributed filesystem under the BSD license.

BeeGFS is another freemium alternative.

Verdict

MooseFS is a strong choice for teams that can run on-premises storage and want capacity, bandwidth, and replica recovery to scale across chunkservers, with Pro features available for failover and multi-location deployments. Choose it first when those operational strengths match the workload; look elsewhere if you need commercial use on a published fixed-price plan or want Windows client access without Pro.
