Overview

Founded in 2012 and headquartered in the United Kingdom, FutureLearn combines short-course materials with subscription access to more than 1,400 courses. Free access can work for learners willing to follow a weekly course schedule; paying makes content available immediately and adds certificates for eligible courses.

Key features

Short courses: Paid subscribers can access 1,400+ courses, with course content available immediately. That breadth is useful for exploring multiple subjects, though certificates apply only to eligible courses.
Weekly free access: The free plan delivers course content weekly. It excludes certificates and test steps, so it is a poor match for learners who need formal evidence of completion or those who want to move through material at their own pace.
Mixed formats and mobile apps: Courses use mixed formats, and FutureLearn is available on the web, iOS and Android. That gives learners a choice of device, without changing the free plan’s weekly delivery limit.

Pricing

Plan	Price	What it includes	Best for
Limited Access	0.00 USD per free	Limited access to short-course materials, delivered weekly; no certificates or test steps.	Learners content to follow a weekly schedule without certificates.
Unlimited Monthly	49.99 USD per month	Access to 1400+ short courses, immediate course content and digital certificates for eligible courses.	Learners who want immediate access but prefer a monthly term.
Unlimited Annual	349.99 USD per year	Access to 1400+ short courses, immediate course content and digital certificates for eligible courses.	Learners prepared to commit for a year to the same subscription access.

The free plan gives up both test steps and certificates, while its weekly release can slow learners who want to study intensively. Both paid plans remove that access delay and include eligible-course certificates. The annual plan costs less than twelve monthly payments at the listed rates, but requires an annual commitment; the monthly plan costs more over a full year and keeps the term monthly.

Platforms

FutureLearn supports web, iOS and Android, so learners can use a browser or either major mobile platform.

Who it's for

Choose FutureLearn if you want short courses across a sizeable catalogue and value immediate access or digital certificates enough to subscribe. Its free tier is better suited to casual learners who can accept weekly delivery and do not need certificates or test steps. It is less suitable if those free-plan limits conflict with your pace or completion goals.

Pros and cons

Pro: Paid access covers 1,400+ short courses, making one subscription useful for learners exploring more than one subject.
Pro: Immediate course content and certificates for eligible courses give paid learners a clearer route to study on demand and document completion.
Con: The free plan releases course content weekly and excludes test steps and certificates, limiting its usefulness for focused or credential-seeking study.
Con: The monthly subscription is 49.99 USD per month; choosing immediate access and eligible certificates entails a substantial recurring cost.

Verdict

FutureLearn is a strong choice for learners who want a large short-course catalogue with immediate paid access and certificates for eligible courses. Choose the free plan only if weekly delivery and no certificates or test steps are acceptable; look elsewhere if you need those capabilities without the monthly subscription.
