Overview

FreeSWITCH provides a media and call-control foundation: it can route calls, bridge video, transcode media and connect protocols. Inbound and outbound calling, SIP and call recording make it relevant to telephony deployments, while its use in carriers and contact centers points to systems built around it rather than individual users seeking a simple calling tool.

The project dates to 2006. SignalWire, founded by the original FreeSWITCH creators, is its primary maintainer. FreeSWITCH is open source under MPL 2.0 and can run in production at no license cost. Teams choosing a self-hosted deployment must still dedicate resources to maintaining on-premises infrastructure. A free SignalWire account is required to access packages and downloads.

Key features

Call control and integration

The Event Socket exposes call control, channel management and internal events over TCP to external processes. That gives teams a way to coordinate call behavior with surrounding software, but assumes they can build and operate those integrations. Documented options include HTTP backends and embedded Lua, Perl, Python, JavaScript and Java.

Telephony and security

The mod_signalwire module connects FreeSWITCH to SignalWire for inbound and outbound PSTN calling over a persistent WebSocket session. Named IP allow and deny lists can be applied to SIP profiles and the Event Socket, giving operators network-level controls for those interfaces.

Commercial modules add answering machine detection and licensed G.729 Annex A encoding and decoding for transcoding. These capabilities are separate from the no-cost open-source core, so teams that need them should account for a commercial option.

Pricing

Plan	Price	What it includes
FreeSWITCH Open Source	0.00 USD per free	Free to download, modify and run in production; self-hosted, MPL 2.0, community support.
SignalWire Platform	Custom pricing	Cloud-hosted programmable layer around FreeSWITCH media engines.
FreeSWITCH Advantage	Custom pricing	Self-hosted, commercial modules including G.729A and AMD, and founder-level support.

The open-source plan is the fit for teams able to handle deployment and rely on community support; it has no stated seat or usage cap, but infrastructure remains their responsibility. The SignalWire Platform offers a cloud-hosted route around FreeSWITCH media engines. Advantage keeps the deployment self-hosted while adding commercial modules and founder-level support. SignalWire also offers commercial support, hardened builds and priority patches through FreeSWITCH Pro.

Platforms

FreeSWITCH is listed for API, Linux, macOS, self-hosted and Windows environments. The getting-started guide documents Linux installation on Debian and Ubuntu using SignalWire packages or a source build.

Who it's for

FreeSWITCH suits communications engineers who need a customizable voice-and-video foundation, particularly teams building products or supporting carrier and contact-center operations. It is a weaker fit for buyers who want a managed, packaged calling product without responsibility for infrastructure maintenance.

Pros and cons

Pro: Production use has no license fee, and teams can modify the MPL-licensed framework.
Pro: TCP call control, multiple language integrations, SIP and PSTN connectivity support integration into broader communications systems.
Pro: Self-hosted commercial modules and support provide an upgrade path for teams needing G.729A, answering machine detection or higher-touch assistance.
Con: Self-hosting requires dedicated upkeep of on-premises infrastructure, making the free license far from a zero-effort deployment.
Con: Downloads require a free SignalWire account, and the open-source edition relies on community support.

Alternatives

Asterisk is another free, open-source, self-hosted option for teams comparing telephony foundations. For visual call-flow tools, Twilio Studio offers a free tier with 1,000 flow executions per month; its free tier is a better fit when that allowance meets the need. Voicent has a free plan capped at 100 minutes or texts and a Starter plan at 179.00 USD per month for 6,500 minutes or texts monthly, making it a distinct option for buyers seeking packaged campaign capacity.

Telnyx Text-to-Speech API offers pay-as-you-go usage with a $0 monthly minimum and no contract, for buyers focused on text-to-speech API usage. Telnyx TeXML pairs TeXML calls with SIP trunking on published pay-as-you-go rates and no contract. Plum Fuse, Zappix Visual IVR and Plum DEV are additional alternatives to compare.

Verdict

Choose FreeSWITCH if your team needs an adaptable, no-cost foundation for voice and video and can own its infrastructure and integrations. Its strongest case is the combination of production-ready open-source licensing and extensive call-control options. Look elsewhere if you need a turnkey service or do not have the resources to maintain a self-hosted system.
