Overview

FreeEed extracts text and metadata from documents, uses OCR, and supports predictive coding. Its stated design accommodates large volumes across data centers, multi-cloud environments, and local networks, though the free plan’s quota is far smaller than that ambition suggests.

Supported material includes PST, MSG, and EML email, DOCX, XLSX, and PPTX files, PDFs, images, ZIP archives, and other common eDiscovery formats. Exports include EDRM XML load files, Concordance DAT, and native files compatible with Relativity, Nuix, and other platforms. Local deployment keeps documents in the user’s environment, and data in transit is encrypted via SSL.

Key features

Search and processing: Full-text search and OCR are available in Community Edition as well as Professional, giving smaller matters basic document discovery without a subscription. Text and metadata extraction help make varied collections searchable.
Review assistance: Professional adds AI Advisor, PII detection, and Matter Summary. These tools give teams additional support for review and understanding documents, but are absent from the free tier.
Matter workflow and export: Professional also includes custodian management and production-ready export. This is the practical dividing line for teams that need to take a matter through production rather than simply search documents.
Deployment and handoff: Windows, Mac, and Linux installers are offered, with support also listed for VirtualBox and Amazon AWS. The range of standard export formats is useful when work must move into other review platforms.
Enterprise controls: Enterprise offers custom integrations with document or case management systems, dedicated SLA-backed priority support, and security and compliance options. SOC 2, HIPAA, and FedRAMP readiness are named; organizations with those requirements should assess the fit directly with FreeEed.

Pricing

Community Edition — 0.00 USD per free (billed $0 /forever). It includes unlimited matters within 1 GB, full-text search, and OCR. That is a clear way to begin without a recurring charge, but the total 1 GB ceiling constrains collection size, and there is no PII detection, AI Advisor, Matter Summary, or production-ready export.

FreeEed Professional — 50.00 USD per month (billed $50 /mo). It includes OCR, full-text search, AI Advisor, PII detection, Matter Summary, custodian management, and production-ready export, with a 30-day free trial. It fits teams that need those review and production functions; the published plan terms do not state a data quota or seat limit.

Enterprise — custom pricing. This tier is aimed at large-scale deployments and adds custom integrations, dedicated SLA-backed support, on-premise or cloud deployment, and security and compliance options. It is the relevant choice for organizations needing those services, rather than a way to extend the published Professional feature set at a known price.

FreeEed also offers a free demo request. Downloads include native installers and a portable ZIP pack for any operating system; unstable daily builds may contain bugs, so they are a less suitable choice when reliability matters.

Platforms

FreeEed supports Linux, macOS, Windows, and self-hosted use. Its supported systems also include VirtualBox and Amazon AWS cloud. The mix of local and cloud deployment gives teams options to match an existing environment, while local deployment keeps documents within that environment.

Who it's for

FreeEed suits legal and eDiscovery teams, enterprise search groups, and forensic investigators that need to process varied document collections and export results into other platforms. Community Edition is appropriate for matters that fit within 1 GB and do not need its withheld review or production features. Professional is the stronger fit for teams needing PII detection, AI-assisted review functions, custodian management, or production-ready export. Organizations requiring large-scale deployment, custom integrations, or SLA-backed support should consider Enterprise.

Pros and cons

Pro: Local deployment keeps documents in the user’s environment, with SSL encryption for data in transit; this suits teams prioritizing control over document location.
Pro: EDRM XML, Concordance DAT, and native exports support handoff to established platforms rather than trapping production in a single format.
Pro: The free tier includes search and OCR, so teams can assess a basic workflow without paying.
Con: Community Edition is limited to 1 GB and omits PII detection, AI Advisor, Matter Summary, and production-ready export; it cannot stand in for a full production workflow.
Con: Professional costs $50/mo after its 30-day free trial; teams needing only occasional small-scale search may not need its added workflow features.
Con: Enterprise uses custom pricing, so organizations needing its integrations or support must establish cost directly before choosing it.

Verdict

FreeEed is a strong candidate for teams that value local deployment, broad document support, and practical export formats, especially when Professional’s review and production tools match their workflow. Choose Community Edition only for collections within 1 GB that can do without its missing analysis and production features; look elsewhere if its cap, Professional subscription, or custom-priced Enterprise tier does not suit the matter.
