Overview

Frappe HR is open-source software for HR and payroll, with workflows spanning recruitment, employee administration, attendance, leave, performance, and pay. It suits organizations that want broad coverage and room to customize, particularly those using ERPNext accounting. The trade-off is that hosting and implementation require budget and ownership; functional support is outside the stated Product Warranty.

For teams prepared to manage that work, the combination of HR, payroll, and framework-level customization is compelling. Organizations seeking a ready-to-run service with little operational overhead should look elsewhere. Browse HR Software for more options.

Key features

Recruitment and employee lifecycle

Recruitment tools cover staffing plans, job listings, applicant tracking, interview scheduling, feedback, offers, and analytics. That is a substantial hiring workflow rather than just a place to store applicant records. Employee records and onboarding carry administration into the employee lifecycle.

Attendance, leave, and performance

Shifts, attendance, time tracking, and leave management cover recurring workforce administration, while performance management extends the product beyond operational record-keeping. This breadth can reduce the need to split HR processes across separate tools, but it also makes implementation choices important for organizations with different workflows.

Payroll and integrations

Payroll supports rule-based salary structures, bulk assignments, payroll runs, off-cycle payments, multi-currency pay, employee loans, and timesheet-based payroll. That range can serve varied pay practices, including organizations paying across currencies. ERPNext accounting integration and connections to biometric tools, banks, and third-party software help link payroll and attendance to adjacent systems.

Customization, security, and mobile access

Using the Frappe Framework, teams can create forms, fields, workflows, reports, and dashboards. This is a practical advantage for organizations whose processes do not fit a fixed HR template, but it favors teams able to take responsibility for configuration. Role-based permissions, audit logs, and activity trails support oversight; Frappe Cloud adds regular backups and encrypted communication. Mobile apps provide smartphone access to HR functions, alongside web, iOS, Android, API, and self-hosted availability.

Pricing

Frappe HR's open-source software plan is 0.00 USD per free under AGPL-3.0. Hosting and implementation cost extra, so the zero software price is not the total cost of running it. Frappe estimates a self-hosted VPS starts around $40/month, with email, security, backups, setup, and maintenance adding further expense.

Frappe Cloud infrastructure plans are priced as follows:

Frappe Cloud Sites: 5.00 USD per month, billed onwards /mo, for 1 site.
Frappe Cloud Servers: 20.00 USD per month, billed onwards /mo, for multiple sites and benches.
Frappe Cloud Servers - Dedicated: 125.00 USD per month, billed onwards /mo, for multiple sites and benches.

Separate Frappe Cloud hosting plans are 5.00 USD per month, billed onwards /mo, for a single site on shared servers with multiple apps, or 125.00 USD per month, billed onwards /mo, for superior dedicated server isolation, snapshots, autoscaling, and global data centre locations. These options distinguish a modest single-site deployment from hosting with dedicated isolation and operational features. The free software plan is best for organizations able to provide or arrange hosting; paid hosting shifts some infrastructure responsibility but does not remove the need to plan implementation. A free trial is available.

Platforms

Frappe HR supports web, Android, iOS, API, and self-hosted use. Self-hosting is available through installation scripts, giving organizations control over deployment while making setup and maintenance their responsibility. Frappe says users can implement independently or seek implementation support from certified partners. Product Warranty covers bug fixes, not functional support, so teams needing process guidance should account for that separately.

Who it's for

Frappe says the modular product can suit small businesses as well as enterprises with thousands of employees. Its recruitment, payroll, and lifecycle coverage makes it a credible option for organizations seeking one configurable system across HR operations. It is a stronger fit for teams with technical capacity, an ERPNext connection, or a willingness to engage an implementation partner than for buyers who need extensive functional support included.

Pros and cons

Pro: Recruitment, employee lifecycle, attendance, leave, performance, payroll, and income tax span much of the HR operation in one product.
Pro: Rule-based and multi-currency payroll, off-cycle runs, loans, and timesheet payroll accommodate varied pay workflows.
Pro: AGPL-3.0 licensing, self-hosting, and framework customization offer deployment and workflow flexibility.
Con: Hosting, implementation, and ongoing operations add cost beyond the free software plan.
Con: Product Warranty excludes functional support, so bug-fix coverage should not be mistaken for help configuring HR processes.

Verdict

Choose Frappe HR if you want broad HR and payroll workflows, need meaningful customization, and can take on hosting and implementation or work with a partner. Its open-source license and payroll range are the strongest reasons to choose it. Look elsewhere if included functional support or a low-effort managed setup matters more than deployment control and flexibility.
