Overview

Netdata is an infrastructure observability platform for teams that need real-time visibility across cloud and on-premises systems. Its strongest appeal is the combination of per-second monitoring, logs, alerts, and troubleshooting, with deployment options that keep metrics on your own infrastructure. The trade-off is a sharply capped free tier and a Business plan whose annual commitment matters.

Key features

Netdata’s agent brings together metrics, logs, dashboards, alerts, and machine-learning capabilities. The platform supports per-second metrics and ML-based anomaly detection and troubleshooting, which suits operators who need to spot and investigate changes quickly rather than rely only on periodic measurements.

Netdata claims more than 800 collectors and notification channels, including Slack, PagerDuty, Microsoft Teams, email, and webhooks. Its agent supports Prometheus, OpenMetrics, StatsD, and OpenTelemetry ingestion, and can export to Prometheus Remote Write, InfluxDB, Graphite, OpenTSDB, and TimescaleDB. That range gives teams options to connect existing telemetry and route data elsewhere.

Deployment can be through Netdata Cloud or on-premises, including air-gapped environments. Netdata says metrics stay on the user’s infrastructure and only metadata reaches the cloud, a meaningful distinction for organizations with data-sovereignty requirements. Netdata Cloud is SOC 2 Type 2 certified; Business features include SSO and role-based access control. Native iOS and Android apps provide alerts and notifications, and support includes documentation and community resources, with premium support available.

Pricing

The Community plan is free, but the limits are restrictive for growing environments: a maximum of five active connected nodes and one active custom dashboard per room. It is a sensible starting point for a small setup, not a substitute for unlimited monitoring.

Business costs $4.50 per month billed annually, with a total cost of $540.00/year. It includes unlimited metrics and logs, unlimited custom dashboards, and unlimited data retention. The jump from Community is justified for teams that need to monitor more nodes or retain data without those stated caps, but the annual billing commitment is substantial compared with the monthly headline price. A 14-day Business trial covers any number of nodes without limits.

Homelab costs $90.00 per year and includes unlimited nodes subject to fair usage. It suits personal or lab environments that need more nodes than Community allows, though the plan’s fair-usage condition makes it a different proposition from Business’s unlimited metrics, logs, dashboards, and retention.

Platforms

Netdata’s platform list includes Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, self-hosted deployment, web, and Windows. Its stated operating-system coverage for monitoring is Linux and Windows. VM and service monitoring are supported, as is agentless monitoring.

Who it's for

Netdata names platform engineers, DevOps teams, SREs, developers, system administrators, CISOs, DBAs, network engineers, and MSPs among its audiences. It is best suited to teams that value granular infrastructure visibility, need both metrics and logs, or have a reason to keep metrics on their own systems. Small teams can start on Community, while teams that outgrow its node or dashboard caps will need to consider a paid plan.

Pros and cons

Broad telemetry coverage: More than 800 collectors and multiple ingestion and export formats can help fit Netdata into varied monitoring stacks.
Choice of deployment: Managed cloud, on-premises, and air-gapped options suit organizations with different infrastructure and data-control needs.
Fast monitoring and mobile alerts: Per-second metrics, anomaly detection, and native phone apps support timely investigation and notification.
Severe free-plan ceilings: Five active nodes and one custom dashboard per room may quickly constrain even modest shared environments.
Annual Business billing: The $4.50 monthly rate requires $540.00/year, so the effective commitment is larger than the headline figure suggests.

Alternatives

Checkmk is worth considering when a free deployment with broader stated integration coverage and support for up to about 100 hosts matters more than Netdata’s per-second monitoring and data-sovereignty positioning; its Community plan is free forever, with 2,000+ pre-built integrations and community support.

Grafana Cloud Application Observability may fit teams that prefer host-hour-based cloud pricing: its Free plan includes 2,232 host hours, while Pro is priced per host hour with a monthly platform fee.

InfluxDB is an alternative for teams seeking a time-series database, with a free pay-for-what-you-use Cloud Serverless option and a single-node InfluxDB 3 Core plan.

VictoriaMetrics is another option when an open-source single-node or cluster deployment is the priority.

Zabbix is an alternative infrastructure-monitoring platform with freemium pricing and a free plan.

Prometheus suits readers looking specifically for a free, open-source monitoring and alerting toolkit under the Apache 2.0 license.

SigNoz offers a self-hosted community option for teams willing to manage the infrastructure, storage, scaling, upgrades, and backups themselves.

Amazon CloudWatch Logs is an alternative for pay-as-you-go log ingestion; its published US East (N. Virginia) rate starts at $0.50 per month for the first 10 TB, with rates varying by region and tier.

Verdict

Choose Netdata if your team needs real-time infrastructure monitoring with metrics, logs, alerts, and flexible deployment, especially when keeping metrics on your own infrastructure is important. Look elsewhere if five nodes and one dashboard are too limiting and an annual Business commitment does not suit your budget or buying preferences.
