Overview

FontBase keeps fonts in their existing folders while bringing them into collections and sub-collections that can be activated with one click. That approach suits people who want to organize a working library without relocating files. Automatic activation for fonts added to designated folders can also cut down on repeated setup.

FontBase includes duplicate detection, OpenType features, and tools to view and copy glyphs. It also provides one-click access to Google Fonts as though they were local. The maker says it does not store user data on its servers; Stripe handles subscription data, while Auth0 handles login and authentication.

Key features

Collections and font activation

Collections make it practical to group fonts by project or purpose, then activate a chosen set without installing each font. Watched folders preserve the existing file arrangement, which is useful for people with libraries already organized on disk. Automatic activation from designated folders is a sensible convenience for workflows where fonts are added regularly.

Glyphs and design workflows

The free feature set includes OpenType features and glyph viewing and copying, giving users useful typographic controls without an Awesome subscription. Awesome adds automatic activation of missing fonts in Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign documents. That targets users who move between design files and font libraries; it is less valuable to someone who does not use those applications.

Sync and team controls

Awesome can sync collections between computers through a cloud drive such as Dropbox or Google Drive. For design and publishing teams, its license controls can set seats, synchronize licenses, limit usage and monitor activations. Team members can be added or removed, and administrators can see who is online and how many fonts they use. These features address shared oversight rather than just individual organization.

Pricing

The free FontBase plan costs 0.00 USD per free and includes the free font-manager feature set, including OpenType features and glyph tools. It is the practical starting point for individual users who need organization and activation without team synchronization or the paid design-app integration.

Awesome Monthly costs 3.00 USD per month, billed at $3 dollars per month, and allows use on up to two personal computers at once. It is the clearest paid fit for an individual who needs Awesome features and prefers a monthly commitment. Awesome Yearly is billed yearly at 20% off, with custom pricing. Awesome Forever is a single payment for updates forever, also with custom pricing. Both retain the two-personal-computer limit.

Organizations are told to buy a subscription per user or contact the maker for a multi-seat account. The two-computer allowance is therefore not a team-wide seat pool; teams should account for user-level subscriptions or arrange a multi-seat account before choosing.

Platforms

FontBase supports Linux, macOS and Windows, making it an option for desktop workflows across those operating systems. It supports TTF and OTF fonts.

Who it's for

FontBase is best for designers who want a free way to collect, activate and inspect fonts while keeping files in their existing folders. Awesome makes more sense for design and publishing teams that need shared collections, license oversight or automatic font activation in Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign. Users who only need a personal font organizer can stay on the free plan; those seeking a broader library-management workflow without team controls may not need the paid tier.

Pros and cons

Pros: The free feature set combines collections, watched folders, activation without installation, OpenType features and glyph tools, so core font work does not require a subscription.
Pros: Awesome's cloud-drive sync and license controls can help teams coordinate collections and monitor usage across members.
Pros: Linux, macOS and Windows support gives desktop users on all three platforms access to the same core product.
Cons: Awesome use is capped at two personal computers at once, and organizations may need per-user subscriptions or a multi-seat arrangement.
Cons: The yearly and lifetime options have custom pricing, making the monthly plan the only paid option with a stated amount.

Verdict

Choose FontBase if you want cross-platform desktop font organization with useful activation, glyph and OpenType features at no cost, or if your team needs Awesome's collection sync and license controls. Look elsewhere if the two-computer cap does not fit your setup or you need clear yearly or lifetime pricing before committing.
