Overview

Flycast is a free emulator for Sega Dreamcast, Naomi, Naomi 2, and Atomiswave. It suits players who want those four systems across Android, Linux, macOS, or Windows, and who are comfortable choosing among release channels or following platform-specific installation steps. Its breadth is a strong draw; dropped iOS support and a Windows path that involves building from source narrow its appeal.

Key features

Four-system support makes Flycast a focused choice for Sega console and arcade emulation rather than a general-purpose emulator. The project publishes stable tagged releases, master builds, and experimental nightly development builds. Stable releases are the sensible pick for users who prefer a tagged version; nightly builds offer a development channel, but experimental builds may not suit anyone prioritizing stability.

Online play receives attention in the release notes: v2.7 includes improved modem emulation and fixes for online features in several games. The v2.5 notes describe DCNet as a free dedicated VPN service for Dreamcast games, with 30 game servers available at release. That gives interested players a route to networked play, though the stated server count is tied to that release.

Flycast supports physical Dreamcast controllers through DreamConn+ and DreamPicoPort adapters. On Android, Google Auto Backup can preserve VMU saves and non-volatile memory. These are useful additions for players with compatible hardware or Android saves, rather than reasons on their own to choose Flycast.

The product supports netplay and does not require a Dreamcast BIOS. Shader and upscaling support are absent, so users seeking those capabilities should consider another emulator.

Pricing

Flycast costs 0.00 USD per free. Its free plan covers Dreamcast, Naomi, Naomi 2, and Atomiswave emulation; no free trial is offered because the product is free. There are no paid tiers to weigh against the free plan. The plan does not require a Dreamcast BIOS.

Platforms

Flycast supports Android, Linux, macOS, and Windows. Android users are directed to Google Play, while Linux users get Flatpak and Flathub installation instructions. macOS users can use Homebrew commands for master, stable, and nightly channels. Windows users are given a bootstrap script to build Flycast from source, a more involved route than the package-based instructions for Android and Linux.

The README also describes an installation route for Xbox One and Series through Xbox Device Portal. iOS support has been dropped, so Flycast is not the choice for users who need an iPhone or iPad emulator.

Building on Linux calls for a C/C++ toolchain, CMake, make, libcurl, libudev, SDL2, and Vulkan or OpenGL. That path offers a way to build the software, but its prerequisites make it better suited to technically confident users than to someone seeking a straightforward install. Flycast is licensed under GPL-2.0, and the project invites users to its Discord server for chat.

Who it's for

Flycast is a good fit for players seeking Dreamcast and Sega arcade emulation in one free package, especially those who value its four-system coverage, netplay support, or adapter compatibility. It is less suitable for iOS users, people who need shader or upscaling features, or anyone unwilling to handle a source-build path where that is the available installation route.

Pros and cons

Pros: Free coverage of four Sega systems makes Flycast useful to players whose libraries span both Dreamcast and arcade hardware.
Pros: Netplay support, modem-emulation improvements, and DCNet provide concrete options for online Dreamcast play.
Pros: DreamConn+ and DreamPicoPort adapter support accommodates physical Dreamcast controllers.
Cons: iOS support has been dropped, ruling it out for Apple mobile users.
Cons: Shader and upscaling support are absent, a meaningful gap for users who want those graphics options.
Cons: The Windows instructions involve building from source, and Linux builds require a collection of development libraries and graphics dependencies.

Alternatives

For broader emulator browsing, start with Dreamcast Emulators or Multi-System Emulators.

Flycast is another free listing for the same four platforms; its plan specifies no ads and says game files are not included and must be owned by the user. MAME is a free, GPL-2.0-or-later alternative on Android, Linux, macOS, and Windows; its ROMs and copyrighted software are generally not included. WashingtonDC is an open-source GPL version 3 option for Linux and Windows, from a one-person team whose only product to date is washDC.

Flycast is another free, open-source listing for Android, Linux, macOS, and Windows. nullDC 2.0.0 is a free option for Linux, macOS, web, and Windows. Redream offers a free plan on Android, Linux, macOS, and Windows, plus a one-time Premium payment listed at 6.00 USD, with pay-what-you-want amounts of $6, $8, $10, and $20. Deecy is a free Linux and Windows option from a maker who describes himself as a software developer from France. Nitrocast is a free Linux option.

Verdict

Choose Flycast if you want free emulation across Dreamcast, Naomi, Naomi 2, and Atomiswave, and value online play or Dreamcast-controller adapter support. Look elsewhere if you need iOS support, shader or upscaling features, or a Windows installation that avoids building from source.
