Overview

Founded in Berlin in 2014, flowkey pairs interactive piano practice with step-by-step courses in theory, chords, and sheet-music reading. Its material is intended for beginners through advanced players, so it can accommodate learners with different levels of experience. The breadth is appealing, but the free tier is better treated as a limited introduction than a way to study the full library.

Key features

The library contains thousands of songs across genres and skill levels, arranged by professional pianists. Wait Mode listens as a learner plays and holds until the right notes are played. That makes it useful for patient, self-paced practice, especially when a learner would rather pause on a difficult passage than keep up with uninterrupted playback.

Video appears alongside sheet music, and learners can slow playback, loop sections, or practice the right and left hands separately. These controls make it easier to isolate a troublesome passage. Courses add a more structured path through theory, chords, and notation, balancing the song-led approach with foundational study.

A compatible piano or keyboard can connect over USB MIDI or Bluetooth MIDI for more reliable note recognition. Progress tracking is also supported. The app’s feedback-led practice suits learners who want their playing recognized as they work, though the value of that feature depends on having compatible equipment when using MIDI.

Customers who buy a qualifying Yamaha digital piano or keyboard in participating regions can receive three months of Premium access through a promotion valid until March 31, 2027. Support is available by email and in-app chat. The privacy policy describes TLS-secured app-data transmission and GDPR rights including access, correction, erasure, restriction, portability, and complaint.

Pricing

The Free Account costs 0.00 USD per free and lasts as long as you want, but includes only a few songs and course lessons. It is suitable for a brief look at the app, not for learners who want consistent access to its catalog or full course offering.

Classic Monthly costs 16.49 USD per month; Classic Yearly costs 99.99 USD per year. Both include all courses, classical pieces, and public-domain songs for one individual. The yearly price is lower overall for someone committed to a full year, but requires paying upfront and comes with an auto-renewing trial arrangement.

Premium Monthly costs 24.99 USD per month, while Premium Yearly costs 149.99 USD per year, paid upfront for the full 12 months. Both add pop, rock, jazz, film, TV, and video game music to Classic content for one user. Choose Premium if that wider contemporary and screen-music selection matters; Classic gives up those categories.

Family Monthly costs 37.49 USD per month, and Family Yearly costs 224.99 USD per year. Both include Premium content for up to five user profiles, making them the relevant choice for a household rather than multiple individual subscriptions. Only Premium is sold through the App Store or Play Store; Classic and Family must be purchased through the web app. flowkey does not offer a lifetime plan.

Yearly plans include a free 7-day Premium trial. Unless canceled at least 24 hours before it expires, the trial converts to a yearly subscription. A 14-day money-back guarantee is also offered. Readers should note the cancellation deadline and upfront annual charge before starting the trial.

Platforms

flowkey is available on Android, iOS, and the web. Its multi-platform reach gives learners options across mobile devices and a browser, though Classic and Family purchases must be made on the web rather than through the mobile app stores.

Who it's for

flowkey is a strong fit for piano learners who want to move between recognizable songs and structured instruction, and who will make use of features such as Wait Mode, looping, or separate-hand practice. Premium suits people seeking pop and other non-classical genres; Family suits households with as many as five profiles. Learners who only want a few lessons, need a lifetime purchase, or do not want to commit to an auto-renewing annual plan should look elsewhere.

Pros and cons

Pros: Thousands of songs across skill levels give learners substantial choice, while step-by-step courses cover theory, chords, and reading sheet music.
Pros: Wait Mode, looping, slower playback, and separate-hand practice support focused, self-paced work on difficult passages.
Pros: Family plans cover up to five profiles, and MIDI connections can improve note recognition with compatible instruments.
Cons: The free account includes only a few songs and lessons, so it offers little room for sustained study.
Cons: Pop, rock, jazz, film, TV, and video game music require Premium; Classic is limited to courses, classical pieces, and public-domain songs.
Cons: Yearly trials convert to annual subscriptions unless canceled at least 24 hours before expiry, and annual plans are paid upfront.

Alternatives

Piano Marvel is worth considering for learners who want a free tier with 150+ songs, performance feedback and scoring, 200+ lesson exercises, and 25 video lessons. It also supports Android, iOS, macOS, web, and Windows.

Skoove is another piano-learning option on Android, iOS, and web, with selected course lessons available free and a 12-month Premium plan priced at 12.49 USD per month, charged as $149.99 every 12 months.

Simply Guitar, MasterPiano, Complete Music Reading Trainer, EarMaster, JustinGuitar, and Yousician are other options to compare.

Verdict

Choose flowkey if you want a broad piano-song library alongside structured lessons and practice tools that let you slow down and work at your own pace. Its strongest reason to look elsewhere is the cost of full access: the free account is tightly limited, and annual subscribers need to manage trial cancellation carefully.
