Overview

IUBPatchLib is a C++ library and command-line utility for applying binary patches, with particular relevance to ROM-hack projects. It is best for developers who want patching inside a C++ build or repeatable workflow; it is not a graphical patcher for occasional users.

Its broad format support, build integrations and optional integrity safeguards make it a capable free toolkit. The trade-off is a developer-oriented setup and software provided without warranty.

Key features

The library handles IPS, UPS and BPS patches through a modern C++ API using RAII and move semantics. That combination suits contemporary C++ projects and covers multiple patch formats without adding external dependencies to the core. The ROM-hack focus is a starting point, not a restriction to ROM files.

CMake builds can produce shared or static libraries, and integration works through find_package, pkg-config or FetchContent. These options give teams flexibility in how they include it, though they still require a CMake- and code-oriented workflow. Tests and command-line tools are enabled by default; examples and benchmarks are off by default, so users who want those components need to turn them on.

The included iubpatch-cli applies patches, reports patch information and validates patches. The API's PatchOptions can enable checksum verification and backup creation, useful safeguards when modifying files. Optional memory-mapped I/O offers another processing choice for file handling, and the CLI example demonstrates backups and disabling memory mapping.

Pricing

The Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and provides MIT-licensed software. No usage limits are stated. There are no paid plans to weigh against the free option, making it suitable for both personal projects and development teams that can work within the license and maintain their own setup.

Platforms

IUBPatchLib supports Windows, Linux and macOS, as well as other POSIX systems. That breadth suits developers working across common desktop environments, though platform support does not change the project's build-oriented nature.

Who it's for

Choose IUBPatchLib if you are building a C++ application, tool or workflow that needs to apply, inspect or validate IPS, UPS or BPS patches. It is especially relevant to ROM-hack work, but its stated use extends to other patching tasks. If you simply want to patch a file through a graphical interface, a dedicated patching app is a better fit.

Pros and cons

Pros: IPS, UPS and BPS support covers several formats in one library.
Pros: A dependency-free core and multiple CMake integration paths help keep integration flexible.
Pros: CLI validation, checksum verification and backup options provide practical safeguards and inspection tools.
Cons: The C++ API and CMake setup make it a poor match for users seeking a ready-to-use graphical patcher.
Cons: Examples and benchmarks are disabled by default, requiring configuration for users who want them.
Cons: The MIT license provides the software as-is without warranty.

Alternatives

ROM Patching Software is a useful starting point for comparing options. Choose EZ ROM Patcher instead for a free browser-based tool with no account or installation stated. rom-weaver is another free, open-source option with browser and command-line versions and no account required.

Floating IPS (Flips) may suit someone who only needs IPS and BPS patching; its Flathub package is community-provided and not verified, affiliated with, or supported by Alcaro. For N64, NES or SNES patching, consider Patcher64+ Tool, which requires 64-bit Windows 7 or newer and PowerShell 5.1 or later.

Gaming Optimizer, ROM Bin Patcher (rombp), BeatDrop Music Visualizer and Delta Patcher are also listed as alternatives.

Verdict

Choose IUBPatchLib if you need a free, cross-platform C++ toolkit for applying and validating multiple binary patch formats, with CLI access and optional integrity controls. Its main advantage is the combination of formats and integration choices; look elsewhere if you need a graphical patching app, or if the as-is warranty terms are not acceptable.
