Overview

Flexible Retirement Planner is a retirement modeling tool for people who want to examine how savings, income and spending choices shape retirement outcomes. It suits individuals and educators exploring plans for personal or educational use. Its scenario modeling is a strong reason to consider it, but the explicit ban on commercial use rules it out for professional planners.

Key features

The planner runs 10,000 Monte Carlo paths through both the saving and retirement-spending phases, then reports a probability of success. That gives users a way to compare a range of modeled outcomes rather than rely on a single forecast, although the result remains sensitive to the assumptions entered.

Income and savings-growth projections, withdrawal planning, detailed tax modeling and Social Security modeling address several central retirement questions. Users can compare Stable, Flexible and Conservative spending policies; the distinctions help frame trade-offs in withdrawals rather than assume one approach fits every retiree.

The standalone version saves inputs and supports multiple what-if scenarios, as well as sensitivity analysis that identifies which inputs have the most impact. It also runs offline. These features suit people who want to revisit and compare assumptions without relying on an internet connection. Standalone downloads are provided for Windows and Mac/Linux, and the Windows version does not require Java.

Pricing

Personal use: 0.00 USD per free. The free plan is for individual non-commercial use, and educators and trainers may use it for educational purposes. A voluntary contribution of any amount unlocks a personal-use license key. This is a straightforward fit for people planning for themselves or teaching in an educational context; paying a contribution does not make commercial use permissible.

Platforms

Flexible Retirement Planner supports Linux, macOS, web and Windows. Its standalone desktop downloads add offline use on Windows, Mac and Linux. The maker directs users facing launch errors to email support and also invites questions through its support forum. The license cautions that the website may not always be available, secure or private, and does not guarantee uninterrupted or error-free use.

Who it's for

This is best for individuals who want detailed scenario comparisons, including people who value offline desktop use, and for educators or trainers using it for educational purposes. It is not suitable for financial planners or other commercial users: the maker neither authorizes nor supports commercial use.

Pros and cons

Pros: Detailed tax modeling, Social Security, withdrawal planning and three spending policies support broad personal retirement comparisons.
Pros: Saved inputs, multiple scenarios, sensitivity analysis and offline desktop use favor repeatable exploration.
Cons: Commercial use, including by financial planners, is expressly prohibited, sharply limiting professional applications.
