Overview

Instead brings research and return workflows together for CPA firms, tax preparers, corporate tax teams, family offices, businesses, and high-net-worth individuals. Users choose which workflows to run, and credits are used only when they start a task. This gives users a say in when paid work begins; the credit estimate shown beforehand helps with budgeting, though actual costs depend on usage and volume.

Key features

Supported returns include individual 1040, C corporation 1120, S corporation 1120-S, partnership 1065, and trust and estate 1041. That breadth is valuable to practices managing multiple entity types, while estate tax 706, gift tax 709, and exempt organization 990 support are still planned. Users can review the agent’s work before filing, a meaningful checkpoint for tax work rather than an automatic handoff.

Instead supports prior-year import, federal and state e-filing, local filing, and filing in 48 or more state jurisdictions; it describes itself as IRS-approved. Google Drive, OneDrive, and Box integrations provide two-way sync, version tracking, and automatic folder mapping, which can reduce document handoffs for teams already using those services. Dropbox, TaxDome, Karbon, Canopy, Xero, QuickBooks Online, Bloomberg Tax, Plaid, and SmartVault are coming soon, so firms relying on those connections may need to wait.

The maker states that Instead is SOC 2 Type II certified. It offers US-based customer support and 24/7 support, with email responses within 24 business hours.

Pricing

Instead Platform

The free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and includes unlimited users, unlimited entities, unlimited e-file and print file, multi-entity support, and collaborators and viewers. It is a generous starting point for teams that need the platform’s shared structure and filing access, but it does not include the Agent’s research, extraction, planning, or preparation work.

Instead Agent

Agent uses pay-per-credit billing, with custom pricing based on volume and usage. It covers tax research, document extraction, memos, plans and deliverables, workflows, and return preparation; filing is free. Credits remain valid for 12 months from purchase. This model suits users who want to start specific tasks rather than commit to a fixed seat count, but frequent workflows can make spend variable.

Platforms

Instead is available on the web. The free Platform plan has unlimited users, so access is not constrained by a published seat cap.

Who it's for

Instead is a strong fit for tax firms and teams that handle several supported return types, need review before filing, and want shared access without a Platform subscription charge. It is less suitable when the work depends on planned return types or integrations, or when a team needs predictable fixed pricing for Agent usage.

Pros and cons

Pros: Free Platform access includes unlimited users and entities, which helps multi-person practices get started without per-seat limits.
Pros: Users control when workflows run, see a credit estimate first, and can review work before filing.
Pros: Support for five return categories, prior-year import, and e-filing across federal, state, and local levels covers a broad tax workflow.
Cons: Agent pricing varies with credits, volume, and usage, so budgeting is less straightforward than a fixed subscription.
Cons: Estate 706, gift 709, and exempt organization 990 support, along with several practice and accounting integrations, are still planned.
