Overview

FilmBox by Photomyne is a phone-based tool for converting film negatives into digital photos. It is best suited to people who want a guided way to digitize negatives without setting up a dedicated scanner. Its main trade-off is clear: the workflow is built around a smartphone, while useful ongoing scanning and backup require a paid plan.

Key features

To scan, FilmBox guides you to place a strip vertically in front of a backlight and capture it in the app. It automatically reverses the negative colors and enhances the image, handling the central conversion step for you. A computer screen can provide the light, or you can open Photomyne’s web backlight link; that flexibility helps if you do not own a separate backlight.

The free allowance covers only the first few photos, so it is better for deciding whether the process suits you than for digitizing a substantial archive. Paid plans provide unlimited scanning, print-quality saving and sharing, photo backup, access on other devices and online, and enhancements. That makes the paid service more practical for a collection you want to keep accessible, but commits you to a membership for continued use.

Most information is saved to the cloud for backup. Photomyne says its systems use AWS in the United States and Ireland, and its privacy policy addresses EU and UK GDPR rights. That setup may suit people who value backup and access beyond their phone; those who prefer not to store photos in the cloud should weigh that before subscribing.

Pricing

Plan	Price and term	What it includes
FilmBox Basic	Free	Limited negative scanning, saving, and sharing.
FilmBox Membership	Custom pricing; billed Yearly recurring subscription	Unlimited scanning; print-quality saving and sharing; photo backup and access on other devices and online; enhancements.
FilmBox One-Shot Membership	Custom pricing; billed Single upfront payment	Unlimited scanning; print-quality saving and sharing; photo backup and access on other devices and online; enhancements. The App Store listing says this plan is valid for 2 years.

FilmBox is freemium, with a free trial also offered. Basic is a limited starting point rather than a long-term choice for a large set of negatives. The recurring membership suits people who expect to scan and revisit photos over time; the upfront option avoids a recurring billing term but its stated validity is two years, not permanent access. Membership prices vary by promotion, time of year, location, and other factors, so compare the price and renewal terms presented to you before paying.

Platforms

FilmBox supports iOS and Android. The US App Store listing identifies it as an iPhone app, while Photomyne says photos can also be accessed on a computer. A computer screen can double as a backlight, but computer access to photos is a paid feature.

Who it's for

FilmBox is a sensible fit for someone with film negatives and a smartphone who wants automatic color inversion, image enhancement, and an optional computer-screen light source in one workflow. It is less suitable for someone who needs to digitize a large collection for free, wants scanning without a phone, or does not want cloud backup.

Pros and cons

Pros: Automatic inversion and enhancement reduce manual image handling; a computer screen or in-app web backlight link can supply light; paid plans add unlimited scanning and access beyond the phone.
Cons: Free use is limited to the first few photos; ongoing unlimited use, backup, and cross-device access require a paid plan; the upfront plan lasts two years, and membership prices vary.

Alternatives

Photo Scanning Software is a useful starting point if you want to compare scanning tools across the category rather than focus on FilmBox.

FilmLab is worth considering if you need desktop or Linux support alongside Android and iOS; its qualifying educator licenses are free by request.
Nostalgia may fit better if you want a free tier with monthly restore and family-vault limits rather than a negative-scanning workflow.
Brother iPrint&Scan is the better fit if you have a supported Brother machine and need its model-dependent printing and scanning features.
Google Photos is another freemium option for Android, iOS, and web.
MyHeritage Mobile App may suit family-tree work, with its free Basic plan covering 250 people across trees and 500 MB of storage.
SlideScan by Photomyne is the closer alternative if you want to scan slides rather than negatives; its free plan also limits scanning, saving, and sharing.
instax UP! is a free Android and iOS app to consider instead.
NAPS2 is a free option for Linux, macOS, and Windows if you want desktop scanning software without ads or restrictions.

Verdict

Choose FilmBox if you want a smartphone-guided way to convert negatives, with automatic correction and paid backup and computer access. Its practical advantage is the simple capture workflow and flexible backlight options; its main drawback is that the free allowance is too small for serious digitizing and the paid price varies. Look elsewhere if you need desktop-first scanning, a substantial free quota, or to avoid cloud storage.
