Overview

Fastly Image Optimizer is a cloud service that transforms and serves images through Fastly’s edge network. It is best suited to media, ecommerce and SaaS teams with image-heavy sites or apps that need image variants generated on demand.

Its appeal is the combination of configurable transformations and cached delivery; the key trade-off is that every request sent to the optimizer is billable, including requests through the SDK.

Key features

Images can be resized, cropped or trimmed, adjusted for quality, reoriented and converted as requests arrive. Developers configure these operations with query parameters and settings, avoiding the need to generate and store a separate file for every variant. That flexibility is useful when image placements and formats vary, but teams that already serve fixed, pre-generated assets may have less reason to add request-time processing.

Fastly caches optimized results for reuse, which can reduce latency on subsequent requests. Supported formats include WebP, AVIF, JPEG and PNG. Configurable defaults cover WebP and JPEG quality, resizing filters, upscaling, animated GIF-to-video handling and processed file types, giving teams control over common behaviors.

The service fits into existing asset pipelines and CMS platforms while teams keep their current image sources. It can be enabled through the Fastly control panel or API. Compute SDK access is in beta, and those requests count toward billable image requests just like other optimizer traffic.

Fastly says its edge network is designed for high-throughput image delivery. It also states that it is ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certified, audited against SOC 2 Type 2 and key GDPR requirements, PCI DSS Level 1 compliant, and audited against relevant HIPAA sections. These credentials may matter to organizations with compliance requirements, though they do not change the request-based billing model.

Pricing

Pricing combines a free monthly allowance with usage-based tiers billed per 10,000 Image Requests. The free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and includes 100,000 requests per month, making it a practical starting point for low-volume use. Once traffic exceeds that allowance, the listed tiers are:

100,000–10 Million requests: 0.50 USD per month per 10,000 requests.
10 Million–50 Million: 0.15 USD per month per 10,000 requests.
50 Million–150 Million: 0.07 USD per month per 10,000 requests.
150 Million–500 Million: 0.03 USD per month per 10,000 requests.
500 Million–1 Billion: 0.02 USD per month per 10,000 requests.
1 Billion–5 Billion: 0.02 USD per month per 10,000 requests.
Beyond 5 Billion: 0.01 USD per month per 10,000 requests.

The lower-volume paid tier suits sites that have outgrown the free allowance, while the lower per-unit rates at higher volumes favor very large image workloads. Because even SDK traffic is billable, teams should estimate request volume rather than assess cost by the number of transformed source files. The product also has custom pricing; the broader paid-from figure is 1500 /mo.

Platforms

Fastly Image Optimizer is offered for API, Linux and web environments. It is deployed in the cloud and supports API access. The wider Fastly platform lists deployment through the Fastly CLI, control panel, GitHub Actions, Terraform and APIs, alongside Rust, JavaScript, Go, C++, Python and other WASI-supporting runtime languages.

Who it's for

It is a strong fit for teams serving many image sizes or formats from existing sources, especially media publishers, ecommerce platforms and SaaS applications with substantial image traffic. On-demand transformation and caching reduce the need to maintain variant files, while the usage tiers give high-volume teams a defined rate structure.

It is less compelling for small or predictable workloads that can use pre-generated files, or for teams that cannot forecast request volume and need a fixed, seat-based price. Organizations that require Compute SDK access should also account for its beta status.

Pros and cons

Pros: On-demand variants. Teams can produce resized, cropped or reformatted images at request time instead of storing each version in advance.
Pros: Cached reuse. Optimized images can be served again with minimal latency on later requests.
Pros: Existing pipeline compatibility. Teams can retain their current image sources and integrate with asset pipelines and CMS platforms.
Pros: Free monthly allowance. The first 100,000 image requests per month cost 0.00 USD per free.
Cons: Request-based costs. Every request sent to Image Optimizer, including SDK requests, counts as billable, so traffic growth affects spend.
Cons: SDK beta. Compute SDK access is not yet outside the beta program.

Alternatives

For a free, self-hosted option, consider BunkerWeb, which offers an AGPLv3 open-source plan and a free trial. Gcore WAAP may suit readers seeking a freemium web application security service: its Free plan includes one domain and 0.5M requests, with quota overage priced at €2 per 1M. Wallarm API Security is an alternative for API security needs, with a free tier for up to 500,000 requests per month and three users, excluding vulnerability assessment and API Abuse Prevention.

BitNinja is another freemium alternative. Cloudflare WAF may fit teams comparing freemium WAF options; its free plan includes one rate-limiting rule. For other security and delivery categories, browse Web Application Firewall Software, DDoS Protection Software, CDN Software and Image Compression Software. Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Secret Management, ModSecurity and OWASP Coraza WAF are also alternatives to consider.

Verdict

Choose Fastly Image Optimizer if your image-heavy site or app needs configurable variants generated at the edge and reused from cache. Its strongest advantage is avoiding advance variant storage while retaining existing image sources; look elsewhere if per-request billing is a poor fit for your traffic or if beta SDK access is essential.
