Overview

One Rust core powers NetsCLI’s desktop app, terminal UI, command-line interface, and MCP server. It covers LAN discovery, TCP and UDP port scanning, DNS queries, and host inspection, making it a useful fit for local diagnostics that may move from interactive investigation to repeatable commands. Its focus is deliberately narrower than a full network-management tool.

Key features

Desktop investigation and reusable output

The desktop app supports multiple investigation tabs, sortable and filterable results, exports, and scan history. That makes it easier to keep separate checks organized and revisit findings; users who need repeatable diagnostics or automation will likely prefer the CLI. Network operations support JSON and YAML, while list commands also support CSV and Markdown, which gives scripts and reports several practical ways to consume results.

Discovery and MCP tools

Discovery can add reverse DNS, ARP cache data, MAC addresses, and device makers when the operating system has that information. These additions can help identify hosts, but the enrichment depends on what the system knows. The stdio MCP server exposes structured tools for discovery, port scanning, ping, DNS, ARP, host inspection, network sweeps, interface listing, and mDNS discovery. That makes NetsCLI relevant to compatible AI clients such as Claude Code and Cursor when an agent needs local network tools, rather than general remote control.

License and downloads

The MIT license permits personal, open-source, and commercial use, and the library and MCP server are published on crates.io for Rust projects. The maker says binaries and installers are checksummed and signed with Sigstore cosign, with verification instructions available. Packet capture is a separate download rather than part of the standard package, and requires libpcap on Linux or macOS, or Npcap on Windows.

Pricing

NetsCLI costs 0.00 USD per free. Its single NetsCLI plan is free for personal, open-source, and commercial use under the MIT license, so there is no paid tier to trade against a capped free offering. There is no free trial because the software is free. The maker publishes no seat or usage quota for the plan.

Platforms

NetsCLI supports Linux, macOS, and Windows. Packet capture has an additional platform dependency: libpcap on Linux or macOS and Npcap on Windows, and it is available only in separate packet-capture downloads.

Who it's for

NetsCLI is a sensible choice for network-minded users who want local discovery and port checks in both a graphical and scriptable workflow. Its CLI suits repeatable diagnostics and automation; its MCP server suits users who want compatible AI agents to call local network tools. It is a weaker fit for administrators who need remote administration, OS fingerprinting, NSE scripts, or advanced service detection.

Pros and cons

Pros

Four ways to work from one core: desktop, terminal UI, CLI, and MCP support different investigation and automation habits without requiring separate tools.
Useful result handling: desktop history, tabs, sorting, filtering, and export help organize investigations, while JSON, YAML, CSV, and Markdown support reuse.
Permissive free license: MIT licensing allows personal, open-source, and commercial use.
Verifiable downloads: the maker says every binary and installer is checksummed and Sigstore-cosign signed.

Cons

No remote administration: NetsCLI is for scanning and inspection, not managing remote hosts.
Less detection depth than nmap: it lacks advanced service detection, NSE scripts, and OS fingerprinting.
Packet capture adds setup: it requires a separate download plus libpcap or Npcap, depending on platform.

Alternatives

Port Scanner Software is a useful place to compare more tools in this category.

Naabu is another free, MIT-licensed port-scanning option, with API and self-hosted platforms in addition to desktop operating systems.
RustScan is a free, open-source port scanner and supports Android as well as Linux, macOS, Windows, and self-hosted use.
Angry IP Scanner is a free, GPLv2 open-source alternative for Linux, macOS, and Windows.
Masscan is free software under the GNU Affero General Public License v3 and supports Linux, macOS, Windows, and self-hosted use.
Nmap is the stronger choice when its advanced service detection, NSE scripts, or OS fingerprinting matter. Its listed free end-user license does not allow redistribution within commercial software or hardware products.
ScanSearch offers an Internet Scanner plan at 0.30 USD per month, billed per kpps/month, with 100–10,000 kpps and unlimited results per scan; it is a different option for users seeking an internet scanner rather than NetsCLI’s local-network focus.
Unicornscan is a free GPL option with downloadable packages and source.
Pentest-Tools Port Scanner offers a free tier for open-port and service discovery, as well as a paid NetSec plan starting at 95.00 USD per month.

Verdict

Choose NetsCLI if you want a free, MIT-licensed way to investigate a local network across desktop, terminal, CLI, and compatible AI-client workflows. Its strongest case is that breadth paired with reusable output and desktop scan history. Look elsewhere if you need remote administration or the advanced detection features available in nmap.
